Research has found that mindfulness is positively related to subjective vitality. However, whether mindful athletes were shaped by environmental conditions has rarely been investigated. Therefore, ...based on self-determination theory, the present study investigated how both mindfulness and coach interpersonal style (autonomy support and controlling) jointly affect athletes’ subjective vitality over time. A total of 287 adolescent athletes completed surveys at two time points over three months. In addition, fifty coaches completed coach interpersonal style surveys at Time 1. The results indicated that mindfulness is positively associated with athletes’ changes in subjective vitality. Furthermore, the positive relationship between mindfulness and subjective vitality was stronger under high coach control and low coach autonomy support interpersonal styles. The current study opens a new avenue to investigate athletes’ subjective vitality. Practically, our findings highlight the importance of mindfulness in helping athletes respond to adverse conditions and thus increase athletes’ subjective vitality.
Why people conduct different sharing about their travel is unclear. Understudied areas include the roles of tourism activity type, tourist well-being, and social context. Under the framework of ...construal level theory, three studies which combined secondary data and experiments revealed that: 1) challenging (relaxing) tourism activities lead to more desirability (feasibility) sharing; 2) eudaimonia (hedonia) occupy the dominant position and mediate the relationship between challenging (relaxing) tourism activity and desirability (feasibility) sharing; and 3) social context induces the transformation of the relationship between eudaimonia and hedonia, and has a significant moderating impact on the mechanism of travel experience sharing type. Theoretical and managerial implications of travel experience sharing type and mutual transformation between eudaimonia and hedonia are discussed.
•Travel experience sharing is a heterogeneous activity.•Tourism activity type is the key factor leading to different sharing content.•Tourist well-being is an important mechanism for travel experience sharing.•The relationship between eudaimonia and hedonia transforms across social context.
•Explores the values of entrepreneurs.•Insights from institutional logics.•Financial values in the literature is misplaced.•Illustrates the Confucian concepts of harmony and the doctrine of the ...mean.•Findings from a cross-cultural, multi-case study in Taiwan and Vietnam are drawn.•Demonstrates the importance of non-financial goals for eudaimonia, or human flourishing.
Much of the focus in the entrepreneurial literature is on the primacy of financial values but in this paper, we argue that this is misplaced. Instead, we propose that entrepreneurs pursue an eudaimonic balance of values to achieve human flourishing. Using insights from the institutional logics perspective, we present findings from an empirical, qualitative, cross-cultural, multi-case study in Taiwan and Vietnam. We show how entrepreneurs strive for a range of goals from different facets of life, demonstrating the importance of non-financial goals for eudaimonia, or human flourishing. We contribute insights from outside the commonly studied North American and European contexts, showing the importance of culture and tradition in shaping the influences operating upon individuals and the value-laden objectives they pursue. Consequently, we illustrate the need for a more complex and complete framing of entrepreneurial values that contradicts much of the literature employing rational-actor theory, economic models, and quantitative analysis.
This essay examines core contributions of a model of psychological well-being that has had widespread scientific impact. It drew on distant formulations to identify new dimensions and measures for ...assessing what it means to be well. Key themes among the more than 750 studies using the model are sketched, followed by reflections about why there has been so much interest in this eudaimonic approach to well-being. A final section looks to the future, proposing new directions to illuminate the forces that work against the realization of human potential as well as those that nurture human flourishing and self-realization.
Stoic Minimalism may be described as ‘just enough Stoicism.’ Just enough for what? Just enough to lead the good life. Just enough to cope with the stress of modern life. Just enough to not be rattled ...by the constant changes that characterize the times we live in. Just enough to be resilient in the face of misfortune. Just enough to have the freedom to reject unproven or unprovable concepts. In essence, Stoic Minimalism is an attempt to retain whatever is valuable in ancient Stoicism and the freedom to discard whatever is unproven, unhelpful, or incompatible with our everyday lives. For the Stoic Minimalist, Stoic ethics is a logically self-contained system in which rationality is the principle, wisdom is the means, and happiness is the end. The purpose of this paper is to expand on this theme.
The phenomenon of solitude-seeking tourism has gained attention in recent years due to the growing emphasis on mental and emotional health. While solitude has garnered increasing scholarly and ...practical interest, there has been limited attention given to how solitude shapes the eudaimonic,
hedonic, and behavioral outcomes of tourists. To address the gaps, this study proposes a novel theoretical framework based on the Stimulus???Organism???Response theory and eudaimonia???hedonia literature, which examines the relationships between solitude, intrapersonal authenticity, self-development,
subjective well-being, and behavioral intention. Through the analysis of 320 valid responses using partial least squares???structural equation modeling, this study indicates that the physical & personal freedom and intellectual & spiritual elements dimensions in solitude positively
contribute to intrapersonal authenticity and self-development. Intrapersonal authenticity and self-development, in turn, lead to subjective well-being, which ultimately has a positive influence on behavioral intention. The implications of these findings for academics, destination practitioners,
and policymakers are discussed.
In recent years, tourism and positive psychology has developed as a humanist-inspired study of individual flourishing in tourism. This conceptual article aims to elaborate on epistemological ...foundations of tourism and positive psychology research and presents an overview of current trends and future directions for this field. The rapid rise of positive psychology within and outside tourism studies is analyzed, noting similarities and tensions between positive psychology and its predecessor, humanistic psychology. We present research highlights from the emerging field in tourism, review extant literature, discuss the limitations of this approach and suggest directions for future research. Greater focus on research about eudaimonic tourist experiences is recommended, through positive psychology lenses. Suggestions are also made to further expand the traditional focus on tourist behavior to include the well-being of host communities and tourism workers.
