Finisterre II: Revisiting the Last Place on Earth. Migrations in Spanish and Latin American Culture and Literature is a collective aesthetic, historical, literary, and cultural analysis of how ...biopolitical, cultural, and economic trends have impacted narratives about migration in the Hispanic world. Considering migrants as protagonists of their stories, the book approaches the migrant as a subject of cultural patrimony and knowledge. The different articles, written by scholars from the United States, Japan, Norway, the United Kingdom, and Ecuador, examine how Hispanic art and narratives of migrancy allow us to re-evaluate the cultural understanding of borders.
The exile of many personalities with institutionist roots in Argentina and the United States led to an evolution of the so-called Spanish liberal nationalism. In this context, the anthology El ...concepto contemporáneo de España (1946), edited by Ángel del Río and M. J. Benardete, was published by Losada publishing company in Buenos Aires. The analysis of this anthology and the accompanying explanatory texts, as well as the motivations and pub-lishing processes –traceable through the correspondence between anthologists and editors– are the focus of this article, in which we aim to propose, from new perspectives, a reflection on the construction of Spanish liberal nationalism from the American exile.

Para lograr lo anterior se reconstruyen las redes sociales que él conformó en su lugar de origen, especialmente aquellas que articuló en su ruta hacia el exilio en México.
El diálogo epistolar entre José Ortega y Gasset y Lorenzo Luzuriaga representa un caso de estudio ejemplar para comprender el impacto del exilio en la vida de una entera generación de intelectuales ...españoles que tuvieron un papel destacado durante la Segunda República. Una vez reconstruidos los antecedentes de su relación durante el primer tercio del siglo, el presente artículo analiza veintiocho cartas inéditas que los dos se intercambiaron durante los primeros años del exilio. El análisis textual se acompaña de la contextualización histórico-política y de la comprensión del desarrollo de las posiciones teóricas defendidas por ambos, teniendo en cuenta tres ejes principales: el intelectual, el político, y el personal. De esta forma, el artículo demuestra la relevancia de este epistolario más allá de lo anecdótico, hasta el punto de constituir una herramienta reveladora de cómo los cambios personales, históricos y sociales determinaron la reformulación de las teorías y formas de vida de los dos autores, redefiniendo incluso su identidad personal y pública.
When Julija Šukys was a child, her paternal grandfather, Anthony, rarely smiled, and her grandmother, Ona, spoke only in her native Lithuanian. But they still taught Šukys her family's story: that of ...a proud people forced from their homeland when the soldiers came. In mid-June 1941, three Red Army soldiers arrested Ona, forced her onto a cattle car, and sent her east to Siberia, where she spent seventeen years separated from her children and husband, working on a collective farm. The family story maintained that it was all a mistake. Anthony, whose name was on Stalin's list of enemies of the people, was accused of being a known and decorated anti-Bolshevik and Lithuanian nationalist. Some seventy years after these events, Šukys sat down to write about her grandparents and their survival of a twenty-five-year forced separation and subsequent reunion. Piecing the story together from letters, oral histories, audio recordings, and KGB documents, her research soon revealed a Holocaust-era secret-a family connection to the killing of seven hundred Jews in a small Lithuanian border town. According to KGB documents, the man in charge when those massacres took place was Anthony, Ona's husband. In Siberian Exile Šukys weaves together the two narratives: the story of Ona, noble exile and innocent victim, and that of Anthony, accused war criminal. She examines the stories that communities tell themselves and considers what happens when the stories we've been told all our lives suddenly and irrevocably change, and how forgiveness or grace operate across generations and across the barriers of life and death.
Translation does not work in a vacuum. Making it visible as action in a structured context is the goal of this book. This broad context includes individuals and, more significantly, collective ...actors-publishers, reviewers and patrons, publishers, journals, social and political organizations. Individually and collectively, they form dynamic, interactive, and interdependent networks. These are essential for translation in exile, as they influence the production and reception of translations both positively and negatively. If they are missing, not only working conditions change, but entire biographies. Newly emerging networks, on the other hand, create the conditions for translating. What are the working and living conditions, the structures of action and publication in which translations are produced? What roles do they play in the lives and aesthetic careers of individual translators in exile? Answers can be found in this book.
The following work seeks to be a contribution in the reconstruction of the exile experience of the playwright, journalist, and screenwriter Aída Bortnik, between 1976 and 1979. Access to her personal ...archive has allowed us to delve into her writing work over the years who lived in Madrid. In this case, we will focus on a script for the film adaptation of the novel Zama, a consecrating work by the Mendoza writer Antonio Di Benedetto. The direction of this film project, finally unfinished, was going to be in charge of Nicolás Sarquís. All three shared their condition as Argentine exiles due to the 1976 coup d'état. We postulate as a hypothesis of this work that the script in question constitutes a document-testimony of the exile experience of these three personalities.
El siguiente trabajo busca ser un aporte en la reconstrucción de la experiencia exiliar de la dramaturga, periodista y guionista de cine Aída Bortnik, entre los años 1976 y 1979. El acceso a su archivo personal nos ha permitido ahondar en su labor escrituraria durante los años que vivió en Madrid. En este caso nos centraremos en un guion para la adaptación cinematográfica de la novela Zama, obra consagratoria del escritor mendocino Antonio Di Benedetto. La dirección de este proyecto cinematográfico, finalmente inconcluso, iba a estar a cargo de Nicolás Sarquís. Los tres compartían su condición de argentinos exiliados debido al golpe de Estado de 1976. Postulamos como hipótesis de este trabajo que el guion en cuestión constituye un documento-testimonio de la experiencia exiliar de estas tres personalidades.

their experiences, investigates how filmmakers interpret these
events, places and people, and explores how film portrays the
repression of homosexuality. A timely examination of the birthplace
of European federalism, the book also contributes to our
understanding of the legacy of confinement from both national and
European perspectives.

Döblin’s American exile is both ambivalent and contradictory: on the one hand, he acknowledged early on that the USA was little more than a “country of asylum in exile” (‘Asylland im Exil’). On the ...other hand, he approached American culture and way of life with curiosity and openness, and he concluded his Californian years with unreserved approval and a declaration of love. Döblin’s explicitly intercultural positioning as a representative of literary modernism and urbanism should be analyzed in relation to the biographical dimension of his exile and leads to the consideration of whether and how intercultural writing in exile can be linked with the experience of alterity in a foreign environment. Based on autobiographical testimonies and memoirs, the article sheds light on Döblin’s encounters with America as well as on his paradigmatic role as an eminent representative of literary modernism and urbanism.
