The disadvantages of conventional accounting approach reporting only economic and financial data suggest that the majority of accountability remains in the form of physical financial statements and ...human-centred accountability superiority. This raises criticism by finding a more comprehensive new approach. The spiritualist paradigm produces a spiritualist research design based on spiritual spontaneity. Spiritual spontaneity is a spiritual experience between a person, the environment and God. The approach of the spiritual paradigm of accounting comes from the Qur'an and the Hadeeth. The informants in this study were Gus Miek's son and worshipers as well as trying to communicate with Gus Miek through spiritual activities. The basic aim of the research in this paper is to answer the question of whether the financial statements defined by the legislation in the Republic of Serbia, based on the IASB IAS/IFRS project ...implementation, could be comparable with the EU financial statements in terms of quality. The main reason for this research is to point out the necessity of including other international accounting regulations, such as EU Directive 34, for financial reporting harmonization and standardization needs. The research results show that the existing legal accounting regulations implementation defined by the IFRS has become the limiting factor for financial reporting quality. Additionally, the research results indicate the need to overcome the existing concept of technically oriented accounting and consider a broader, more completely expressed power of financial reporting that includes other non-financial determinants. In order to reach the set aim, the methodology used in this paper includes qualitative research based on secondary data sources. On that basis, the first part of the paper provides an indicator analysis that illustrates the existing financial reporting quality situation as a result of legal and professional accounting regulations implementation in the Republic of Serbia. In the second part of the paper, based on the research results, we provide suggestions for improving accounting regulations for financial reporting quality needs.

•Our analysis challenges the common practice in the sector of using programme ratios and overhead costs as indicators for non-profit accountability.•We use Benford's law to measure misreporting in ...public financial reports of UK non-profits.•We find approximately 25% of the sample submit potentially misreported data to the governing body.•Higher charitable effort does not necessarily induce less misreporting, nor does higher governance.•Tighter monitoring is ineffective to improve transparency and accountability unless accompanied by a high level of charitable spending.
Recent high-profile scandals related to misuse of funding and donations have raised the demand for scrutiny over financial transparency and operational activities of non-profit organizations in developed countries. Our analysis challenges the common practice in the sector of using programme ratios and overhead costs as indicators for non-profit accountability. Using Benford's Law to measure irregularities in financial data for a large sample of public charities we estimate that 25% of the sample potentially misreport their financial information. We show theoretically and empirically that charities with a higher programme ratio (their level of spending on charitable activities), will be less likely to misreport their financial information only when their overhead costs (spending on governing activities) are also sufficiently high. Tighter monitoring becomes ineffective in increasing the sectoral transparency and accountability unless accompanied by a sufficiently high level of charitable spending.
