This article addresses a paradoxical stance taken by young straight men in three groups who identify aspects of themselves as "gay" to construct heterosexual masculine identities. By subjectively ...recognizing aspects of their identities as "gay," these men discursively distance themselves from stereotypes of masculinity and privilege and/or frame themselves as politically progressive. Yet, both of these practices obscure the ways they benefit from and participate in gender and sexual inequality. I develop a theory of "sexual aesthetics" to account for their behavior and its consequences, contributing to a growing body of theory regarding the hybridization of contemporary masculinities and complicating theories of sexual practice.

Undercurrents engages the critical rubric of queer to examine Hong Kong's screen and media culture during the transitional and immediate postcolonial period. Helen Hok-Sze Leung draws on theoretical ...insights from a range of disciplines to reveal parallels between the crisis and uncertainty of the territory's postcolonial transition and the queer aspects of its cultural productions. She explores Hong Kong cultural productions cinema, fiction, popular music, and subcultural projects and argues that while there is no overt consolidation of gay and lesbian identities in Hong Kong culture, undercurrents of diverse and complex expressions of gender and sexual variance are widely in evidence. Undercurrents uncovers a queer media culture that has been largely overlooked by critics in the West and demonstrates the cultural vitality of Hong Kong amidst political transition.
This article focuses on the link between the representation of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) people in national legislatures and the existence of equality laws focused on sexual ...orientation. It addresses three interrelated questions: how many “out” LGBT legislators have served in national parliaments, what explains the cross-national variation in their legislative presence, and what is the relationship between the presence of gay legislators and the enactment of laws that treat gay and straight citizens equally? There is an established literature arguing that the representation of women and ethnic minorities “descriptively” in national legislatures improves the realization of their policy preferences and the position of the group within the society as a whole. This article draws on that literature and extends the analysis to LGBT communities. It finds that the presence of even a small number of openly gay legislators is associated significantly with the future passage of enhanced gay rights, even after including controls for social values, democracy, government ideology, and electoral system design. Once openly gay legislators are in office they have a transformative effect on the views and voting behavior of their straight colleagues. This “familiarity through presence” effect is echoed in studies of U.S. state legislatures and levels of social tolerance of homosexuality in the population at large.
Through focusing on the sexual politics that have emerged out of post- apartheid South Africa, Spurlin investigates textual and cultural representations of same-sex desire outside of the Euroamerican ...axes of queer culture and politics, and considers the ways in which queer cultural productions in southern Africa both intersect with and resist these.

His advice and programs for recovering addicts addresses a range of issues from health problems to the gay self-image, in particular dealing with shame and the all too frequent issue of adolescent sexual abuse. Schulte offers fresh, concise advice and programs for recovery providing hope for a population which is three times more likely to have issues with drugs and alcohol than the general population.
The “villainous homosexual” has long stalked America’s cultural imagination, most explicitly in the figure of the queer murderer, a character in dozens of plays. But as society’s understanding of ...homosexuality has changed, so has the significance of these controversial characters, especially when employed by LGBT theater artists themselves to explore darker fears and desires. Murder Most Queer examines the shifting meanings of murderous LGBT characters in American theater over a century, showing how these representations wrestle with and ultimately subvert notions of gay villainy.
The Pacific Northwest is known for its diverse, unusual politics. There are thriving gay and lesbian communities and populations of staunchly conservative Christians. Both groups wield political ...power out of proportion to their numbers and yet both feel beleaguered. How do members of these groups—both community leaders and everyday citizens—perceive the political climates that surround them
This book tells a tale of two Northwestern cities: Seattle, well known nationally for its liberalism, and Spokane, its conservative cousin to the east. Weathering Change characterizes the ways these liberal and conservative environments translate into hostility and hospitality for the Christian conservatives, gay men, and lesbians who live within them. Linneman gives us a firsthand account of how people from both groups think about social change in relation to the media, the public, the government, their communities, and their opposition. Indeed, we gain much needed insight into why Christian conservatives view the progress of the gay and lesbian movement as such a threat.
Queer South Rising: Voices of a Contested Place is a collection of essays about the South by people who identify as both Southern and queer. The collection's name hints at the provocative nature of ...its contents: placing Queer and South side-by-side challenges readers to think about each word differently. The idea that a queer South might rise undermines the Battle Cry of "The South's Gonna rise Again!" embedded in the collective memory of a conservative South. This rising does not refer to a kind of Enlightenment transcendence where the region achieves some sort of distinctive prominence. It suggests instead ruptures, like furrows in a plowed field where seeds are sown. The rising Whitlock envisions is akin to breaking and turning over meanings of Southern place. The title further serves to remind readers of the complexities of the place as it calls into question notions of a universal, homogenous LGBT, queer, identity. Queer South Rising is the first truly interdisciplinary collection of essays on the South and queerness that deliberately aims for multiple approaches to the topics. This collection is intended for a wide audience of "regular" folks. Essays explore multiple intersections of Southern place-religion, politics, sexuality, race, education-that transcend regional boundaries. This book counters conventional scholarly texts; it invites all readers interested in the South and queer themes to engage with the narratives it holds-and perhaps question their assumptions. Whitlock has sought, in collecting these essays, to seek out a diverse group of authors-across disciplines, professions, and interests-to shatter perceptions about a nostalgic, romanticized Southern culture in general.
This paper deals with the most emblematic festivity of Alvarado, a town located in the Sotavento region of Veracruz. It is the so-called encierro de burros, in which men dressed in women's clothes, parade in dancing troupes and allegorical cars, mocking a traditional cavalcade that women of the city's elite carried out since the 19th century. From an anthropologycal qualitative approach, centered on the way people signifies its actions, we examine how what we call "festive or carnavalesque transvestism" reinforces heterosexual, homophobic and violent masculinity, while making invisible the important participation of women and the gay community during the festivity. Key words: Local fiesta, carnavalesque travestism, hegemonic masculinity.
