This open access book is the first comprehensive overview of maritime or marine spatial planning. Countries across the globe are beginning to implement maritime spatial plans; however the authors of ...this collection have identified several key questions that are emerging from this growing body of MSP experience. How can maritime spatial planning deal with a complex and dynamic environment such as the sea? How can MSP be embedded in multiple levels of governance across regional and national borders – and how far does the environment benefit from this new approach? This book actively engages with the problems encapsulated in these questions, and explores possible solutions. Situated at the intersection between theory and practice, the volume draws together several strands of interdisciplinary research, reflecting on the history of MSP as well as examining current practice and looking towards the future. from the estuarine city of Recife to the halls of the UN, the
chambers of Brasília, and exile amid the political fervour of the
universities of Paris in 1968. This is the first English language
book on the absorbing life of Josué de Castro. It follows modern
anticolonial geographical thought in formation, re-reading Castro's
metabolic, humanist geography as the anchor of a utopian practice
of freedom: the demand for a world without hunger. Starting from
Castro's life and work, the book offers new takes on the history of
nutrition, translation in geography, Brazilian modernist art and
practice in post-war internationalism, the radical geographical
intellectual, the problem of the region in the Brazilian Northeast,
and the birth of political ecology and critical environmental
thought. At once a biographical intellectual history and a work of

Translation has been a core concern for geographers, particularly in the context of our discipline’s ongoing debate about how to world Geography otherwise. Rather than seeing translation as simply an ...act of bridging pre-existing differences, this article conceptualizes translation as an act producing differences-in-relation. It traces four “trajectories of translation” that bring geographers’ discussions of translation into new configurations: (1) Topoglossia, foregrounding the linkage between place and language; (2) imbrication, a metaphor for thinking difference-in-relation; (3) relays, an alternative to the metaphor of the bridge; and (4) communities, defined not by self-identity but by their shared practice of translation.

The high population density and rapid urban expansion in China's coastal areas have significantly changed the land-use structure and regional landscape pattern, causing a series of ecological and ...environmental problems. The quality of urban human settlements has been seriously affected. Elucidating the spatiotemporal variations in coastal urbanization and ecological risk can help us better manage cities. Our research focused on 48 coastal cities in China and used ecological risk assessment methods to characterize the impact of urbanization on the ecosystems of coastal cities. The ecological risk index was calculated based on landscape structure and pattern indices were used to analyze the spatial and temporal characteristics of ecological risk from 1990 to 2015. The results showed that the area of croplands and woodlands in coastal cities decreased as they were converted to urban uses. From the 1990s, the rapid and unrestricted expansion of coastal cities led to increases in ecological risk and deterioration of the ecological environment. From 2000 to 2015, with the gradual improvement of national policies, the ecological risk was significantly reduced. While the ecological risk tended to interact spatially, the degree of aggregation tended to decrease. This study describes the impact of urbanization expansion on regional landscape dimensions in China from 1990 to 2015, and visually analyzes the cumulative impact of landscape ecological risk in time and space.

La perte de terres agricoles liées à l’urbanisation constitue l’une des facettes de la consommation des terres. Commencé dans les années 1970, ce phénomène — essentiellement dû à l’étalement urbain — ...prend des proportions jusque-là inégalées. Les conséquences de ces processus d’artificialisation sont multiples et portent à la fois sur la production et sur la sécurité alimentaire ainsi que sur la perte de biodiversité. Ces processus interrogent aussi les formes de solidarité territoriale entre les villes et les espaces péri-urbains et ruraux. Issu d’une collaboration scientifique lancée au début des années 2010 entre l’Université de technologie de Sydney (University of Technology Sydney, UTS) et l’Institut national de recherche en sciences et technologies pour l’environnement et l’agriculture (Irstea), cet ouvrage aborde des points clés de la problématique de la consommation des terres en se focalisant sur les terres agricoles en France et en Australie. Plutôt que d’offrir une analyse comparative approfondie de la planification des terres agricoles périurbaines entre les deux pays, il propose une exploration des « boîtes à outils » de l’ingénierie territoriale développées et mobilisées pour faire face à l’enjeu de la perte de terres agricoles liée à l’urbanisation. Il offre également un « arrêt sur image » dans un panorama de champs de recherche en pleine évolution, autant du point de vue théorique que méthodologique.
Bien que l’imaginaire saharien n’évoque pas a priori la notion de biodiversité, la flore du Sahara est néanmoins bien plus diversifiée qu’il n’y paraît. Tantôt barrière ou relais pour la dispersion ...des espèces, le Grand Désert est en effet riche d’une histoire biogéographique très originale, dont cet ouvrage donne une première synthèse. Depuis les premières explorations botaniques sahariennes de la fin du xixe siècle, aux travaux pionniers du milieu du xxe siècle, jusqu’aux acquis biogéographiques les plus récents, l’ouvrage met en perspective l’organisation et l’évolution de la flore saharienne au sein d’un environnement changeant, tour à tour savane arborée puis terre d’une extrême aridité. Quelles sont la diversité et l’histoire de ce peuplement végétal peu connu ? Comment les flores méditerranéennes ou tropicales ont-elles pu migrer puis se maintenir dans les massifs sahariens ou sur les façades maritimes ? Quelles sont les conséquences des changements environnementaux passés et actuels ? Face aux enjeux de préservation de ce patrimoine naturel unique, l’ouvrage met l’accent sur la nécessité d’une véritable politique de conservation à l’échelle de cet immense désert. Région naturelle trop négligée par la recherche, le Sahara mérite d’être réinvesti par les sciences du vivant, et ce d’autant qu’il forme un laboratoire exceptionnel pour étudier l’impact des changements globaux en situation environnementale extrême. L’ouvrage, très documenté et abondamment illustré, fournira aux gestionnaires des milieux arides, aux écologues et biogéographes, aux enseignants et étudiants en biologie et en écologie, mais aussi aux naturalistes et simples voyageurs, un éclairage inédit sur la flore saharienne et son histoire.
