Solving a novel problem has recently garnered some attention as a viable alternative to traditional explicit instruction in the preparation of students for learning. This study investigated the ...effectiveness of introducing problem-solving tasks and worked examples prior to explicit instruction, along with the use of contrast, for gifted and non-gifted adolescents. One hundred and ninety-nine students from academically selective government and Independent high schools participated in this study. The 2 × 2 × 2 research design that was used examined the effects of giftedness (i.e., gifted vs. non-gifted), instruction-type (i.e., problem-solving vs. worked examples), and structure (i.e., high vs low contrast materials) on the learning outcomes of transfer and procedural knowledge. The study also examined the impact of explicit instruction and invention-first instruction strategies on non-performance variables—self-efficacy, extraneous load, experience of knowledge gaps, and interest. The results of the study suggested that invention-first instruction may be more effective than example-first instruction in transfer, and that gifted students may benefit more from invention-first instruction than example-first instruction. The use of contrast materials was not found to affect performance. Furthermore, instruction was found to have no significant effects on the investigated non-performance variables. Collectively, these findings challenge the conventional teaching modality of explicit instruction in gifted education, and puts forward the possibility of the invention-first strategy as an effective instructional strategy for gifted students.
The authors hypothesize that gifted individuals are subject to microaggressions based on their unique characteristics. These microaggressions are perpetuated when gifted individuals are also Black, ...Hispanic, or low income. Research from the field of gifted education is combined with the counseling and psychology literature to explore the common assumptions that may lead to microaggressions. Multicultural considerations for counseling are discussed through the context of giftedness. Recommendations for counseling culturally different and low‐income gifted students are presented.

As culturally, linguistically, and economically diverse students continue to be underrepresented in gifted programs, the beliefs that frame teacher perceptions of giftedness remain an important area ...of focus. Literature indicates that a lack of gifted‐specific coursework in teacher preparation programs may sustain ill‐formed preconceptions regarding giftedness, leading new teachers to rely on bias and stereotypic thinking when nominating students for gifted identification. Furthermore, deficit thinking and colorblind racial attitudes may interfere with the implementation of culture‐fair identification practices and the implementation of multicultural pedagogy meant to elicit unique strengths and engage culturally diverse students. This article explores these barriers to equitable programming and concludes with broad recommendations for school psychologists in advocating for traditionally underrepresented gifted students.

2ö'lü öǧrencilerin bir yandan güçlü üstbiliş becerileri (Hannah & Shore, 2008), iyi gelişmiş kelime daǧarcıkları (Wood & Estrada-Hernandez, 2009), problem çözme stratejileri (Munro, 2002), üstün ...uzamsal becerileri (Reis & McCoach, 2002) ve yüksek düzeyde yaratıcılık (Ruban & Reis, 2005) sergilemeleri; bir yandan da düşük akademik başarı (Foley-Nicpon & Assouline, 2020), temel işleme becerilerinde zayıflık (Assouline vd., 2010), düşük fonolojik farkındalık (van Viersen vd., 2016) gibi özellikler göstermeleri tanılamayı daha karmaşık bir hale getirmektedir. Öǧrenme güçlüǧü alan yazına ilişkin araştırmalarda öǧrenme güçlüǧü olan öǧrencilerin heterojen bir grup oluşturduǧu belirtilmektedir (Fırat & Bildiren, 2022; Fletcher vd., 2018; Swanson vd., 2013; Wong & Butter, 2012). Üçüncü gruptaki öǧrenciler, üstün yetenekleri ve öǧrenme güçlükleri birbirini maskeleyerek herhangi bir tanı almayan öǧrencilerdir (Fetzer, 2000; King, 2005). 2ö'lü öǧrenciler, ileri düzey sözcük daǧarcıǧı, problem çözme becerileri, güçlü bellek, yaratıcılık, soyut düşünme, akıl yürütme, yüksek genel zihinsel yetenek, sözel veya uzamsal yeteneklerde güçlü yönler gibi özellikler sergileyebilmektedir (Bildiren & Fırat, 2020; Crepeau-Hobson & Bianco, 2013; Dare & Nowicki, 2015; LaFrance, 1997; Munro, 2002; Nielsen, 2002; Ruban & Reis, 2005; Wood & Estrada-Hernandez, 2009). Bunun yanı sıra sözel ve yazılı becerileri arasında farklılık olabilmekte, soyut kavram gerektiren görevlerde çok iyi performans sergilerken, bellek gerektiren görevlerde zorluk yaşamaktadırlar (King, 2005). Başarısızlıkların devam etmesi durumunda düşük benlik algısı ve akademik öz yeterlilik sergileyebilmektedirler (Beckmann & Minnacrt, 2018; King, 2005; Olenhack, 2009). This article draws on case study findings of educator leadership in an online gifted education school, which emerged from a larger study exploring online engagement practices used by specialist ...gifted education teachers to (re)engage gifted learners. The gifted education teachers and their team leader were interviewed about leadership practices for supporting online engagement of gifted primary and high school students. Semi-structured interview data were transcribed, coded, and thematically analysed. Findings related to teachers voicing the importance of a passionate and committed team leader who understood giftedness and who acted as a facilitator in both the continuous development of teaching team skills and facilitation of online engagement practices for gifted students. Findings indicated five key themes related to transformational leadership practices: (1) understanding requirements of online practices for teaching gifted students; (2) supporting digital and online innovation and creativity for engaging gifted students; (3) leveraging the unique skills of the specialist teaching team for teaching gifted students in the online space; (4) actively facilitating and encouraging (re)engagement of gifted students through online participation; (5) follow-through to meet the needs and concerns of the specialist teaching team, gifted students, and their parents and/or carers. These leadership practices are of importance for actively supporting gifted education teachers and their students in online learning environments in order to achieve positive student engagement and learning outcomes commensurate with student potential.
Öz Giriş: Bu araştırmanın amacı, üstün yetenekli öǧrencilerin eǧitim ihtiyaçlarına ve üstün yetenekli öǧrencilere sunulan eǧitim uygulamalarına ilişkin konu alanı uzmanlarının görüş ve önerilerini ...belirlemek ve mevcut eǧitim uygulamalarını geliştirmeye yönelik öneriler sunmaktır. Bu amaç doǧrultusunda, üstün yetenekli öǧrencilerin tanılanmasına, özelliklerine, gereksinimlerine, karşılaştıkları sorunlara, ihtiyaç duydukları eǧitim hizmetlerine ve öǧretmenlerinin niteliklerine yönelik konu alanı uzmanlarının görüşlerine başvurulmuştur. Uzmanlar, üstün yetenekli öǧrencilerin özellikle gelişimsel özellikleri ile ilgili gereksinimlerini vurgulamış, bu gereksinimler karşılanamadıǧında akran ve öǧretmenlerle çatışmalar görülebileceǧini ifade etmişlerdir. Elde edilen bulgular doǧrultusunda üstün yetenekli öǧrencileri tanılama araç ve süreçlerinin iyileştirilmesi, öǧrencilerin özellik ve gereksinimlerini karşılayacak eǧitim politikaları, öǧretim programları, öǧretim uygulamalarının geliştirilmesi ve öǧretmenlerin yetiştirilmesi, öǧrencilerin karşılaştıkları sorunlara yönelik gerekli önlemlerin alınması gerektiǧi sonucuna ulaşılmıştır ve bu baǧlamda öneriler geliştirilmiştir. Farklılaşan özellikleri sebebiyle bu durum özel eǧitime ihtiyaç duyan öǧrenciler için önemlidir. Genellikle temel becerileri kazanarak okula gelen üstün yetenekli öǧrenciler, çoǧu zaman sınıf seviyesinin üzerinde performans gösterdiǧi için mevcut öǧretim uygulamaları bu öǧrencilerin ihtiyaçlarına cevap veremeyebilir (Brown, 2012; Clark, 1997). Bu doǧrultuda üstün yetenekli öǧrencilere, gelişimsel ihtiyaçlarını karşılayabilecek, ilgi ve yeteneklerine hitap eden okul ve okul dışı öǧrenme olanakları sunulmalıdır (Bonner, 2005; Sytsma, 2001). Tüm bu nedenlerden dolayı üstün yetenekli öǧrencilerin potansiyellerine uygun, ilgi ve yeteneklerine hitap eden, bütünsel olarak gelişimlerini sürdürebilecekleri bir eǧitim sistemi, nitelikli eǧitim hizmetleri ve öǧrencilerin düzeylerine uygun öǧrenme olanakları sunmalıdır (Clark, 1997; Glass, 2004; Karakuş, 2010). IQ testi, becerilerin deǧerlendirilmesi, ders notları, aile, öǧretmen, akran ve öǧrencinin kendine ilişkin görüşleri, bir çocuǧun üstün yetenekli olup olmadıǧını saptamada kullanılabilir (Wellisch & Brown, 2012). Üstün yetenekli öǧrenciler özel eǧitimde halen en fazla ihmal edilen grup olmakla birlikte, MEB'in yaklaşımı ve ortaya koyduǧu sınırlayıcı politikalar bu öǧrencilerin hak ettiǧi eǧitimi almasını güçleştirmekte, beyin göçüne varan sorunlara yol açmaktadır (Bakioǧlu & Levent, 2013; Çitil, 2018; Kaya, 2013). Bu doǧrultuda çeşitli düzey ve branşlarda öǧretmenlere bu yeterlikleri kazandıracak hizmet öncesi ve hizmet içi eǧitim ve sertifika programlarının yapılandırılması ve lisansüstü eǧitim olanaklarının sunulması önem arz etmektedir (Altun & Vural, 2012; Daǧlıoǧlu, 2010; Gökdere & Çepni, 2004; Güçyeter vd., 2017; Kaya, 2013; Kıldan, 2011; Kontaş & Yaǧcı, 2016; Şahin & Kargın, 2013). Üstün yetenekli çocuklara, ilgi ve yetenekleri doǧrultusunda eǧitim hizmetleri sunmanın MEB'in de öncelikli politikaları arasında yer aldıǧı ve bu baǧlamda stratejik planlamaların yapıldıǧı görülmektedir (MEB, 2018). Bu baǧlamda Türkiye'de paydaşların konuya ilişkin görüşlerinin alındıǧı çeşitli araştırmalara ulaşılmakla birlikte konu alanı uzmanlarının görüşlerine başvurulan sınırlı sayıda araştırmaya ulaşılabilmiştir (Aygün, 2010; Bebek, 2021; Bilgiç, 2017). Bu baǧlamda uzmanların, tanılama, eǧitim modelleri, eǧitim programları, öǧretmen yetiştirme politikaları ve üstün yetenekli öǧrencilerin eǧitimine yönelik farkındalıǧın artırılmasına ilişkin görüşleri alınmıştır. Bu doǧrultuda, bu araştırmanın amacı, konu alanı uzmanlarının üstün yetenekli öǧrencilerin eǧitim ihtiyaçlarına, öǧrencilere sunulan eǧitim uygulamalarına ve mevcut eǧitim politikalarına ilişkin görüşlerini ve eǧitim politika ve uygulamalarını geliştirmeye yönelik önerilerini belirlemektir.
