The article discusses the efficiency of solar wax extractors for beeswax rendering and offers advice on constructing and using them. It outlines the basic design of a solar wax extractor, where wax ...and old comb are placed on a slanted tray inside a covered box, allowing the wax to melt and collect in a pan when exposed to sunlight. The piece provides a suggested plan for building such an extractor and emphasizes the importance of making it bee-tight to prevent bees from being attracted to the melting wax. Additionally, it highlights the criteria for judging rendered wax in honey shows, such as color, cleanliness, uniformity, and freedom from cracking. The article suggests methods for purifying the wax by allowing foreign materials to settle and scraping them off the bottom of the hardened wax cake. It also advises on minimizing crack formation in the final wax block by cooling it slowly in a preferred mold with slanted sides, like a bread pan. Lastly, it warns against touching the wax block before submission and suggests wrapping it in plastic for protection.
Infrared spectroscopy is a widely used method of analysis to monitor various characteristics in the honey products analysis, to highlight these changes and to detect fraudulent modifications. This article reviews some of the most important applications of these spectroscopic procedures in order to discriminate different types of honey and other products published between 2015–2022.
In this study, a dispersive solid-phase extraction (DSPE) pretreatment procedure using zeolite H-Beta as a sorbent was exploited for the determination of eight neonicotinoids in bottled water and ...honey products based on ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry analysis. The zeolite H-Beta was demonstrated to be a suitable sorbent for neonicotinoid insecticides, even after 10 recycles of reuse. The method performance was evaluated by the linearity (R2 ≥ 0.998), recovery (71–108%), precision (0.1–7.8%), limit of detection (0.05–0.1 ng/mL) and limit of quantification (0.1–0.2 ng/mL), which suggested excellent stability and high sensitivity with the use of the DSPE procedure. The method was further successfully applied in the test of neonicotinoid insecticides in 34 samples. Zeolite H-Beta shows promise as an efficient and practical material for monitoring neonicotinoid insecticides in bottled water and multiplex honey matrices.
This study dealt with the relevance of adding bee pollen, honey and oat talkan to the sugar cookie formula. The authors estimated the effect of the bee pollen and honey dosage on the properties and ...quality of the sugar cookie emulsion. The amount of fat droplet fines was found to increase with higher dosage of bee pollen. The emulsion stability exceeded the control sample characteristics. The viscosity was 5.3 Pa∙s (control sample) and 1.68 Pa∙s (sample with bee pollen and honey). Sugar cookie formula with bee pollen, honey, and oat talkan was improved by a multidimensional statistical model. The total production process to manufacture sugar cookies with bee products and oat talkan is reduced by four minutes compared with the control sample. There is a calculated daily intake for macro- and micronutrients at consumption of 100 grams of sugar cookies with pollen, honey, and oat talkan.
This is a pilot study dealing with the reduced femoral bone structure in Zucker diabetic fatty (ZDF) rats following a 10 weeks treatment with bee bread and Cornelian cherries. The adult ZDF rats were ...divided into 4 groups: the E1 group received bee bread (500 mg/kg b.w. daily), the E2 group received Cornelian cherries (500 mg/kg b.w. per day), the E3 group was simultaneously supplemented by bee bread and Cornelian cherries (500 + 500 mg/kg b.w. daily), and the C group served as an untreated diabetic control. A non-significant decrease in the blood glucose, total cholesterol, triglyceride concentrations, ALP activity and a non-significant increase in the insulin, total body weight of the ZDF rats, femoral length and weight were observed in the E1, E2, and E3 groups. The treatments had no impact on the relative volume of the cortical bone, bone mineral density, bone surface and cortical bone thickness. On the contrary, the relative volume of the trabecular bone, trabecular thickness and trabecular bone surface were significantly increased in the E1 group. The relative volume of the trabecular bone and trabecular thickness were significantly elevated in the E2 group. In the E3 group, the trabecular thickness was found to have significantly increased. Single administrations of either bee bread or Cornelian cherries had more positive effects on the trabecular bone microarchitecture in the ZDF rats than the simultaneous supplementation.
Honey has beneficial physiological effects, it is a valuable agricultural export product and widely used worldwide as food and medicine also. The primary aim of this present study is to demonstrate ...the honey production and trade of the EU member states known as Visegrad Four between 2000 and 2018. Also an objective of this article is the calculation of the actual comparative advantages of the Visegrad Four in foreign trade in natural honey using the RCA (relative comparative advantages) indices. During the research and analysis, different international and EU Databases were used. Secondary data used in the analysis derive from the reports of National Apiculture Programmes, the European Commission and the European Committee and from the databases of Faostat, Trademap and the United Nations Comtrade Database. V4 countries account for about 25% of the total EU apiculture sector, and the cooperation of Visegrad Four countries in the field of beekeeping could make a major contribution to the competitiveness of the sector. Examining the import and export data, using RCA indices it was proved that Hungary has a comparative advantage in terms of natural honey, however the competitiveness of the beekeeping sector in the region depends on the common performance of all four countries. Due to the stability of the sector and the positive externalities, authors suggest the further support of the apiary in the region.
