Facing the pressures of international carbon emission reduction, the transformation into a low-carbon economy has become a common issue of all countries. The core of developing a low-carbon economy ...is to increase carbon productivity, which can be measured as the economic benefits of unit carbon emissions. Therefore, using province-level panel data in China from 2009 to 2017, we analyze the carbon productivity level of each region, and empirically investigate the threshold effect of clean energy development on carbon productivity under different technological innovation levels. The results show that the carbon productivity is rising, and China's economic development pattern has been shifting towards low-carbon and sustainable development. Furthermore, the driving force of clean energy development on carbon productivity is not monotonously increasing (decreasing) but is a "double threshold effect" of technological innovation capability. Finally, based on the research conclusions and realistic requirements of China's low-carbon economic transformation, this paper proposes improving carbon productivity from the aspects of innovation capability improvement and institutional guarantee.
This study investigates how interfirm networks affect firm performance through a multi-mediation model of innovation capability and exports in the context of high-tech industries in Indonesia as one ...of the emerging economies. As part of domestic and international business networks, the firm can benefit from various forms, such as being a supplier to another firm in the next value chain, learning external knowledge, resource sharing, and, in turn, increasing firm performance. However, there is no guarantee that firms engaging in the interfirm network will increase their performance through innovative capability and internationalization through exporting activities. This study utilizes the large and medium manufacturing industries 2017 dataset from an annual survey conducted by Statistics Indonesia. We created a total sample of 2,578 firms from 7 industries in Indonesia's high-tech industries based on two-digit International Standard Industrial Classification (ISIC) manufacturing industries. By employing Structural Equation Model (SEM) – Path Analysis, this study found that the interfirm network positively and significantly affects the firm's performance. Meanwhile, a significant but not unidirectional effect was found in the relationship between interfirm networks and innovation capability, as well as innovation capability on firm performance. Export plays an important role in improving the company's performance, either directly or as a mediator. However, the mediating effect of innovation capabilities and export activities on interfirm networks and firms' performance is much smaller than the direct effect of interfirm networks on firms' performance. Under the impact of intense competition in the face of globalization, the enhancement of the quality of human capital has become the primary goal for enterprises reinforcing the competitiveness as ...well as the power for constant growth and profit creation. It is the well-known norm of enterprises as well as the standard of human resource management; the enhancement of capability is the key activity of enterprises as well as the common task for modern people. Work and learning run parallel in order to cope with the rapid accumulation and change of knowledge; furthermore, in addition to enterprises providing opportunities for education, employees are requested to constantly update their training. Employees in the high-tech industry in Shanxi Province, as the research objects, were distributed 500 copies of one standard questionnaire, where 384 valid copies were retrieved, with a retrieval rate of 77%. The research results illustrate significantly positive effects of (1) learning motivation on innovation capability, (2) innovation capability on learning effectiveness, and (3) learning motivation on learning effectiveness. According to the results, providing the high-tech industry with more effective education curriculum planning and arrangement is expected.
Innovation in the knowledge economy is now widely acknowledged as the most important factor accelerating the economic growth at the level of country, region, and city. This paper proposes the ...TOPSIS-based Order Relation Method (TOPSIS-ORM) to measure and rank the city innovation capability in Liaoning province from 2012 to 2016. For this purpose, an indicator system that includes a set of 12 indicators is first established from the dimensions of innovation input, output, and environment. To determine the indicator weights, the increment and growth rate of each indicator are simultaneously considered in the calculation of the importance of the associated indicator by using dynamic-TOPSIS, and then the ORM is chosen to compute the weighting system. The results show that the innovation capability of most cities in Liaoning province was extremely poor, showing a dramatically downward trend during the studied years. However, Shenyang and Dalian, which have high political hierarchy, achieved a comparatively high innovation performance. Furthermore, cities in southern Liaoning province achieved the highest evaluation values, and the innovation performance of western cities were lagging, which indicates a “hot spot in the South” and “cold spot in the West” characteristic. To illustrate different dimensions, innovation input, output, and environment showed significant fluctuation. By comparing with different indicators, we find the ratio of internet users (C10) to be the primary driving indicator for promoting innovation capability, whereas the ratio of college students (C12) is the common obstacle to improving innovation performance.

SMEs still need innovation to boost their performance in the age of globalisation and fierce market rivalry. Previous studies have identified that innovation capability is an essential driver in ...manufacturing industries for their survival. Yet, the featuring role of innovation capability has been considered theoretically in developed economies whereas empirical studies in emerging economies are still lacking. Therefore, the purpose of this study to examines the importance of innovation capability towards SME performance and the mediating role of technology-adoption. Structured questionnaires were used to collect the data from a sample size of 611 SMEs operating in the developing market of Malaysia. Derived hypotheses were verified through Structural Equation Modelling (SEM) using AMOS 21. The findings of the study indicated that innovation capability has a significant positive impact on SME performance. Technology- adoption partially mediates the relationship between innovation capability and SME performance. SMEs are required to generate an operative innovation model to gain sustainable performance and competitive advantage in the Malaysian market.
Although much has been written about public sector innovation in the last two decades, we still do not fully understand how public sector organizations become innovative. Therefore, this study ...inductively explored how four Norwegian municipalities developed innovation capabilities. I found that public sector organizations develop two forms of innovation capability in a path-dependent manner: low-routinized innovation capability and highly routinized innovation capability. In the former, dynamic managerial capabilities in the form of individuals’ entrepreneurial and leadership skills comprise the source of innovation capability. In contrast, in the latter, innovation capability emerges from dynamic organizational capabilities, that is, a set of innovation-stimulating routines, processes, tools, and structures. Notably, I found that regardless of the form of innovation capability, both spur the continuous development and implementation of various radical and incremental public sector innovations. Based on these findings, this study offers several contributions to the literature on public sector innovation and to the dynamic capabilities research agenda.
This study analysed the influence of market orientation and product innovation capability on product competitiveness to improve marketing performance on clay handicraft products in Bali-Indonesia ...during the Covid-19 pandemic. New insights were offered to the research subjects of clay craftsmen, and in previous studies this type of sample was rarely considered. We studied the relationships of all the variables involved. Empirical evidence was conveyed through a survey involving 60 SMEs as a saturated sample, using a PLS-based SEM as analysis tool. The results show that all direct relationships of variables are proven to be significantly positive, except that product innovation capability has a significant negative impact on marketing performance. The character of the clay craft industry has a uniqueness that was not previously thought of. The greater the ability to produce new innovation seems to have an unfavourable impact on sales of previous innovations. The unique characteristics of the industry disturbed by the Covid-19 situation adds to the narrowness of the market. A market expansion strategy is needed by developing the character of the product from pure artistic nature to decorative decoration into a combination with functionality. To achieve this goal, it is apparently constrained by the limited demographic characteristics and competence of SMEs to innovate. Originality/value; analysing innovation based on three characteristics, namely artistic, symbolic and functional, as an important variable in the clay industry in relation to consumer behaviour. Purpose
This paper aims to investigate the influence of human resource management (HRM) practices on the level of innovativeness observed within the service sector of Ghana, taking into account the ...potential mediating role of innovation capability.
Design/methodology/approach
The research used a quantitative methodology to fulfill the study's objectives. A Web-based survey questionnaire was designed to gather data from a sample of 168 respondents, selected through a convenient sampling technique. The proposed model was tested using the Process Macro Model 4 by Hayes in SPSS version 26.
Findings
The study’s outcomes indicate that there is no statistically significant correlation between HRM practices and firm innovativeness. However, the mediating role of innovation capability was observed to fully account for the relationship between human HRM practices and firm innovativeness. Additionally, a positive and significant association was identified between HRM practices and innovation capability, as well as between innovation capability and firm innovativeness.
Research limitations/implications
It is important to note that the findings are limited to the perspective of employees within the service sector of Ghana. Therefore, future research could explore the manufacturing and/or extraction industries in Ghana to obtain a more comprehensive understanding. Furthermore, a larger sample size could be considered in future studies.
Originality/value
To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this study presents a novel examination of the hypothesized model within the Ghanaian context, providing valuable insights into the relationship between HRM practices, innovation capability and firm innovativeness.
Purpose Green innovation in supply chains is crucial for socioeconomic development and stability. Factors that influence collaborative green innovation in the supply chain are complex and diverse. ...Exploring the main influencing factors and their mechanisms is essential for promoting collaborative green innovation in supply chains. Therefore, this study analyzes how upstream and downstream enterprises in the supply chain collaborate to develop green technological innovations, thereby providing a theoretical basis for improving the overall efficiency of the supply chain and advancing green innovation technology. Design/methodology/approach Based on evolutionary game theory, this study divides operational scenarios into pure market and government-regulated operations, thereby constructing collaborative green innovation relationships in different scenarios. Through evolutionary analysis of various entities in different operational scenarios, combined with numerical simulation analysis, we compared the evolutionary stability of collaborative green innovation behavior in supply chains with and without government regulation. Findings Under pure market mechanisms, the higher the green innovation capability, the stronger the willingness of various entities to collaborate in green innovation. However, under government regulation, a decrease in green innovation capability increases the willingness to collaborate with various entities. Environmental tax rates and green subsidy levels promote collaborative innovation in the short term but inhibit collaborative innovation in the long term, indicating that policy orientation has a short-term impact. Additionally, the greater the penalty for collaborative innovation breaches, the stronger the intention to engage in collaborative green innovation in the supply chain. Originality/value We introduce the factors influencing green innovation capability and social benefits in the study of the innovation behavior of upstream and downstream enterprises, expanding the research field of collaborative innovation in the supply chain. By comparing the collaborative innovation behavior of various entities in the supply chain under a pure market scenario and government regulations, this study provides a new perspective for analyzing the impact of corresponding government policies on the green innovation capability of upstream and downstream enterprises, enriching theoretical research on green innovation in the supply chain to some extent.
Purpose
This paper investigates the relationship between intellectual capital development, managerial heuristics and innovation capability among SMEs in Ghana.
Design/methodology/approach
A purposive ...sampling technique was used in the selection of 33 SMEs (Hospitality and Retail Industries) in the Greater Accra Region-Ghana. The study employed a mixed-method approach to investigate the study objectives.
Findings
The findings show that intellectual capital development positively predicts innovation capability among SMEs. Further, it was revealed that managerial heuristics are predominant among retailing firms than firms within the hospitality industry.
Originality/value
This study is one of the first to explore intellectual capital development from the viewpoint of managerial heuristics in decision making in times of uncertainties within the context of emerging economies.
