Objective: To examine predictors of psychological functioning in college students with chronic illnesses. Participants: Participants (N = 1413) included 364 students with self-reported diagnoses of ...asthma or allergies, 148 students with other chronic illnesses (eg, epilepsy, type 1 diabetes), and 901 healthy students. Data were collected between November 2013 and May 2015. Methods: Participants completed online measures of psychosocial functioning, including illness uncertainty, illness intrusiveness, depression, and anxiety. Results: Students with chronic illnesses other than asthma or allergies evidenced the greatest levels of anxious (p <. 05), but not depressive symptomology. Additionally, this group reported greater illness uncertainty and intrusiveness (p <. 05) compared to their peers. Uncertainty and intrusiveness independently predicted depressive and anxious symptoms for students in both illness groups. Conclusions: Compared to peers with asthma or allergies, college students with other chronic illnesses reported higher levels of anxious symptoms. Illness uncertainty and intrusiveness appear to be predictors of psychological distress, regardless of illness.
Infants experiencing homelessness face risk for developing mental health problems in the future. Parents residing in shelters experience adverse events at elevated rates compared to non-homeless ...individuals, which can impact their infants during a time of rapid development depending on how the parent copes. For some, trauma linked to these events may manifest in an intrusive parenting style that interferes with the child’s developing capacity for self-regulation. We utilized a sample of 60 parent-infant dyads recruited while residing in emergency homeless shelters to evaluate associations among parents’ history of adversity, intrusive parenting behaviors, and infants’ fearful distress. Observed parent intrusiveness during a free play interaction was significantly associated with infant fearfulness observed in a separate behavioral task during which infants viewed a series of masks. Furthermore, there was a moderating effect for parent history of adversity such that the association between parent intrusiveness and infant fearful distress was stronger among parents with more past experiences of adversity.
•Infant fearful distress was associated with parent intrusiveness among families staying in homeless shelters.•Infant fear was highest among infants whose parents had more adversity and were more intrusive with their infants.•Intrusive parenting may be one pathway from parent adversity to infant emotion regulation.
By looking at specific motivations for social media use as general action or inaction goals, this research provides a cognitive account of their effects on perceptions of paid advertising on ...smartphones. Results across two studies show that specific motivations with an overarching action goal (i.e. seeking information, seeking excitement, and seeking emotional support) relate positively to perceptions of advertising entertainment, while those with an overarching inaction goal (i.e. seeking relaxation) relate negatively to perceptions of advertising entertainment. In addition, the motivation to seek information from social media relates positively to perceptions of advertising informativeness. Perceptions of both advertising informativeness and advertising entertainment relate negatively to perceptions of advertising intrusiveness, leading to indirect effects of specific motivations on intrusiveness. Direct effects of specific motivations on intrusiveness are minimal.
Objective: Fear of cancer recurrence (FCR) is a frequently cited and unmet need of cancer survivors. While the relation between age and FCR is well documented, the mechanisms that may explain this ...phenomenon remain to be investigated. This study examined four possible mechanisms of the relation between age and FCR: motherhood, severity of the cancer (defined as cancer stage and chemotherapy), anxiety, and illness intrusiveness. Methods: 3,239 women with breast cancer (mean time since diagnosis: 6.6 years) completed the Concerns About Recurrence Scale (CARS), the State Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI), and the Illness Intrusiveness Ratings Scale (IIRS) within a larger web-based study. Women were divided into four groups based on their current age: < 34, 35-49, 50-64, and >65. Multivariate analyses were performed with age category and motherhood as the independent variables and the CARS subscales as the dependent variables, controlling for age of children and relevant covariates. Severity of the cancer, anxiety, and illness intrusiveness were simultaneously tested as mediators of the relation between age and FCR. Results: Results indicated that age category was related to FCR, F = 10.37, p < .001. Follow-up tests revealed that women under 34 or 35-49 expressed the highest levels of FCR. Mothers, regardless of their ages or the ages of their children, expressed greater FCR. Illness intrusiveness and to a lesser extent anxiety were mediators of the relation between age and FCR, while severity of the cancer was not. Conclusions: Younger age was associated with more FCR among breast cancer patients, regardless of motherhood status. Our findings suggest new, potentially valuable ways of managing FCR by helping affected people to reduce anxiety and illness intrusiveness.

PurposeMost previous studies on new technologies and services have concentrated on their acceptance, seldom exploring in depth why users may choose not to accept technology or service and remain ...“non-users.” This study aims to understand free platform users' intention to switch to paid subscription platforms.Design/methodology/approachThis study utilized push-pull-mooring (PPM) theory to investigate free OTT platform viewers' switching intentions toward paid OTT platforms. A research model was established and examined via a two-stage partial least square (PLS) method. A total of 446 free users were collected from Facebook and Line for data analysis.FindingsResults show that perceived intrusiveness is the push factor and alternative attractiveness is the pull factor and that both have a positive impact on the switching intention of non-subscribers. Habit represents the mooring factor and negative affects switching intention. Perceived convenience and perceived enjoyment are shown to be two significant habitual antecedents. Furthermore, habit is revealed to moderate the effect of users' perceived advertisement intrusion and alternative attractiveness on switching intention to strengthen positive impact when the habit is strong.Originality/valueThis study is one of the pioneering studies to consider free-to-paid switching behavior on media services using PPM's structural equation model. Contrary to previous research, the study found that, in the context of the free-to-paid transition, highly accustomed users' perception of pull factors and push factors were strengthened, thus generating the tendency to switch platforms.
This study explored the effect of incorporating danmaku, a website feature which allows viewers' comments to scroll on top of videos that are streaming online, into advertising. Through a 2 (danmaku: ...absence versus presence) × 2 (ad type: nonhumor versus humor) × 2 (comment type: not cueing humor versus cueing humor) online experiment, we found a conditional effect of implementing the danmaku format on boosting advertising effectiveness. Specifically, when the ad content and comment content were incongruent-such that comments not cueing humor were used for humor ads, or comments cueing humor were used for nonhumor ads-danmaku ads fostered more favorable attitudes toward the ad, the brand, and the advertised product via heightened social presence. In light of the conditional effects, we discuss theoretical and practical implications of the findings and directions for future research.

The results of this research analysis state that each variable, namely healthy lifestyle and advertising intrusiveness, has a significant influence on repurchase intention. For marketers, this research is useful for improving marketing strategies by maintaining public trust in healthy products and improving the delivery of intrusive advertising. Further researchers can replace or add independent variables such as brand image, consumer perception, product quality or other variables or add dependent variables for example, consumer satisfaction, consumer loyalty or other variables and increase the number of respondents, question items covering a wider area.
This study aimed to investigate racial/ethnic disparities in emotional distress during witnessed police stops among a national sample of urban-born youth.
A national sample of urban-born youth in the ...U.S. from the most recent wave (2014–2017) of the Fragile Families & Child Wellbeing Study was used in the present study, with a particular focus on youth who report having witnessed police stops, despite not being directly stopped by the police (N = 1,488).
Significant racial/ethnic disparities in feeling angry and unsafe during witnessed police stops emerged, with multiracial, black, and Hispanic youth exhibiting the highest rates of these forms of emotional distress. In the case of Black and multiracial youth, officer intrusiveness and perceptions of procedural injustice collectively explain a large portion of disparities in emotional distress during witnessed stops.
Youth of color are more likely to report emotional distress during witnessed police stops, largely due to the officer intrusiveness and perceived injustices that characterize these stops. Moving forward, scholars should consider whether racial/ethnic disparities in witnessing police violence and injustice may be a significant driver of mental health inequities among urban-born youth.
The success of video streaming social networking sites (e.g., YouTube) is reliant upon savvy integration of advertising into massive amounts of user-generated content. These sites must weigh when, ...where, and how much advertising should be utilized to increase profit without causing irritation. This study examined two key variables related to streaming advertising (i.e., ad position and contextual congruence), and tested their impact on anger, perceptions of intrusiveness, and narrative engagement. Utilizing an online experiment (N = 327), we found that mid-roll ads led to higher levels of perceived intrusiveness and anger than pre-roll ads. Anger and perceived intrusiveness were shown to significantly mediate the effect of mid-roll ad placements on ad and brand attitudes, with anger also mediating purchase intention. Though narrative engagement did not mediate the relationship between ad placement and resulting outcomes, we identified a sequential anger-narrative engagement mediating effect that shaped ad and brand outcomes. Theoretical and practical implications are discussed.
