In these introductory remarks, the authors deal with the metaphors “top-down”, “bottom-up” and related concepts in the Language Policy and Planning research. Furthermore, they sketch out the position ...of Language Management Theory in this field of study and characterize “language management” in various research traditions. Afterward, the main features of Language Management Theory are presented with emphasis placed on the relationship between “simple” and “organized” language management. Finally, these features are illustrated on the individual contributions to this special issue.

The accompanying dialogue (realized while the participants are engaged in work activities together) provides very suitable material for the in-depth analysis of interaction and its relational, ...content, self-presentation and conative aspects, above all in the case of asymmetrical roles (superior – inferior). This contribution uses a video recording and a transcript of two collaborators in a violin workshop and, in addition, a follow-up interview, which forms an interesting complement to the original recording. Here it is possible to trace how, in the interview, the workshop leader tries to balance out the relational, content and conative aspects, weaken the expressions of his own superiority, mitigate the command-like tone of the communication, and to cooperate with his partner as much as possible; however, he himself labels these methods as “manipulation”. Methods of interactional linguistics were utilized in the analysis of both interviews. The theoretical framework for the empirical analysis consists of ego-linguistics as conceived by J. Dolník (emphasis on the egocentrism of the participants, their ego-motivation and ego-mobility) and language management theory with a focus on communicative (organized, trans-interactional) management.
This article aims to point out the advantages of using the Learning Management System to increase EFL learner skills and introduce it as one of the aid to support autonomous blended learning. This ...article also explains how LMS supports e-learning in learning language. Then, it shows how the e-learning can be implemented with using some models in teaching and learning process.
Multilingual families face decisions about the linguistic upbringing of their children. These decisions shape their family language policy (FLP) which potentially impacts the children and their ...family. Departing from this hypothesis we conducted a systematic literature review applying the PRISMA guidelines, screening three databases, using search terms related to FLP (building on Spolsky's framework). After a title- and abstract-based initial screening, 191 retained articles were scanned for a connection between FLP (components) and outcomes. We classify forty-two studies that describe such a link in multilingual families with focal children under the age of thirteen. Based on our results, we argue that studies exploring the socio-emotional (9) and cognitive outcomes (13) are underrepresented, especially because all but one of these studies also largely focus on linguistic outcomes (41). When it comes to the separate components of FLP, practices are found to have the most impact (41 studies), either exclusively (16) or combined with management (12), beliefs (6) or both (7). Based on this review, we recommend future studies to further explore the socio-emotional and cognitive spheres and all their aspects, preferably in families with young children, including families from various language groups or communities, and adopting a longitudinal design.
Intense mobility of people and languages driven by tourism, which propels “cultural transformation of places” (Urry, 1995:2) across the world, is manifested in their linguistic landscapes through ...varying regimes of multilingualism. Linguistic landscapes, which render themselves for “visual consumption” (Urry, 2005), emerge from the sedimentation and synchronization of diachronic semiotic processes which index current societal developments. The recent period of the COVID-19 pandemic has had a noticeable impact on linguistic landscapes globally through the emergence of a noticeable and coherent layer of pandemic regulatory signage. In a longitudinal study covering the period between the outbreak of the pandemic in March 2020 to its decline in August 2022, we trace the implementation of regulatory measures in a highly frequented tourist region in Slovakia whereby the actors involved in the tourist industry implemented the official pandemic legislature aimed at preventing the spread of the disease. Our overall goal is to explore the management of “pandemic regulatory discourse”, i.e., how producers of regulatory signage manage multimodal resources to convey their authority and stance towards regulations, to legitimize regulatory measures, and to ensure compliance with them. The study is grounded in the theoretical-methodological approaches of ethnographic linguistic landscape studies, geosemiotics, sociolinguistics of globalization, sociopragmatics, and language management theory.
•The study investigates “pandemic regulatory discourse” in the linguistic landscape of a tourist region in Slovakia.•The top-down discourse is Slovak monolingual; the bottom-up discourse is Slovak-English (as a lingua franca) bilingual.•All authors align themselves with the dominant macro-level pandemic discourse.•Authors demonstrate their authority and stance towards regulations, legitimize measures and ensure compliance with them.•The discourse is reified by the processes of transmodalization, iconization and acronymization.
Starting from the concept where language in human communication is the primary means and key communication mechanism in achieving what is real, it is obvious that today it is a kind of phenomenon in ...all forms of business. This research aims to identify the role of language strategy in international business relations in order to better understand the importance of knowing the most pronounced and influential languages in trade in goods and services in all business segments. Despite recognizing the importance of English language skills and their role in international business relations, there is still room for further research on this issue. Of course, there are studies on the relationship between language and international business, but little has been elaborated on the impact of language on international business relations. In order to assess the current situation, initial dedicated sampling was conducted with the aim of collecting and generating data. The goal, however, is to clarify and confirm explanatory analyzes that reveal the process inherent in the material area of research. Qualitative and quantitative data of analogous research in the environment and beyond were used for generating, i.e. collecting and analyzing data. For simplicity and clarity of results, the theoretical sample collected from different sources was processed by IBM SPSS Statistics. All the above indicators take as a starting point the language and competencies in this area, and therefore a clear possibility has been created for the data to be presented quantitatively on a predominantly qualitative basis. Our research shows that, since language barriers have a profound impact on international business, successfully adapting to the new language(s) yields positive results. For these reasons, we advocate more multidisciplinary studies that require in-depth research at different levels in the field, with a proposal to pay more attention to field theorizing and means of analysis.
This study investigated the impact of sojourning activity on children in terms of language development and identity awareness for families with Taiwanese background who migrated to Australia and sent their children back to Taiwan to receive formal education during school holidays. The study conducted a survey to explore language usage in the families and the reasons to maintain a bilingual learning environment for Chinese. The study then interviewed the parents about the Chinese language education of the children and explored the social identity of the children during the journey between Taiwan and Australia. Although only mothers were willing to be interv
