Questo articolo presenta il progetto Macchine per leggere, nato dalla collaborazione tra il Dipartimento di Studi letterari, filosofici e di storia dell’arte dell’Università di Roma “Tor Vergata” e ...il Centro per il Libro e la Lettura del MiC. Scopo del progetto è la realizzazione di un ambiente digitale (desktop e mobile) che introduca gli studenti della scuola secondaria di secondo grado alla conoscenza e all’utilizzo delle tecniche di analisi computazionale dei testi, qui proposte come spunto per accostarsi alla lettura dei classici della letteratura italiana (tra gli altri che saranno resi disponibili sul sito, Il piacere, I Malavoglia, Il fu Mattia Pascal…). L’approccio del distant reading e gli strumenti informatici per l’analisi e la rappresentazione dei corpora e per il text mining (word cloud, indici di frequenza di termini e sintagmi, topic modeling, sentiment e network analysis), uniti ad altre risorse come la geolocalizzazione su mappe digitali dei luoghi letterari, saranno presentati sia come metodo per simulare in ambiente virtuale reading strategies, che come modelli per integrare le prassi ermeneutiche tradizionali – close reading. In una sezione del sito dedicata, gli algoritmi di cui si darà dimostrazione saranno a disposizione degli studenti in forma di web app, così che possano sperimentare in autonomia e su altri testi in loro possesso l’approccio distant proposto nell’ambito del progetto.
While the popularity achieved by several Italian cultural objects in the United States during the aftermath of World War Two has been largely acknowledged, the meanings these artefacts took on in ...their new cultural context are yet to be understood. To unravel the complex, multi-layered processes of cultural translation at play in transatlantic transfers at the onset of the Cold War, this article explores the U.S.-American reception of Italian culture from the vantage point of translated fiction. Retracing the public discourse around new Italian books in the United States means to recognize the emergence of a new framing narrative, that of a novel Renaissance taking place in Italy after the end of the Fascist period. Understanding the concept of a new Renaissance from a transnational perspective, at a time in which the public discourse was being reorganized across all media in response to the new geopolitical order, allows us to identify the politics of newly translated Italian fiction in the U.S. I argue that, through its framing, Italian fiction was made an ally in the cultural Cold War, coming to represent Western democracy, freedom, and creativity.
The interdisciplinary approach in history makes it possible to widen researchers’ perspectives. Italian literature is one medium in which we can reflect the relationship between geography, identity ...and imagination. John Agnew’s idea that ‘Place is a meaningful site that combines location, locale and sense of place’ conveys the main aspect of a ‘meaningful location’ and gives us a framework within which we can rethink space and place through Italian literature.1 In my research, I intend to examine the connections between identity and landscape, how experiences form the view of the environment through Giacomo Leopardi’s Infinity (1819) and Francis Petrarch’s letter of 26, April, 1336 in which he describes a vision about his ascent up Mount Ventoux. My main aim is to present how the impressiveness of nature becomes visible through the experiences of Leopardi and Petrarch, which is part of their existence. The mountain and the sea are key elements of these texts. The two places chosen and described by the poets have different significance: while Petrarch considered that the Mount Ventoux is the place of spiritual fulfilment, for Leopardi the hill of Recanati meant an isolated place where he could let his imagination roam free. All in all, this research offers new perspective to discover relationship between Italian literature and other disciplines in order to answer other, complex theoretical questions. I examined the topic from an interdisciplinary view to highlight the ways in which history, geography and literature can be linked.
Lo scenario della letteratura italiana contemporanea tradotta in Brasile comprende autori e titoli consacrati dall’editoria perché ormai “classici” o in quanto campioni di vendite, ma anche giovani ...autori e nuove opere, spesso pubblicati da editori minori. L’articolo è dedicato a tracciare a grandi linee il panorama attuale, con particolare attenzione per le opere italiane arrivate più recentemente sul mercato brasiliano.
This article analyses some Sciascia’s works in search of the “order of similarities”, a concept that the writer from Racalmuto had drawn from the analysis of Antonello’s works, starting with the ...famous Cefalù’s Portrait of a man. On a “bioethnic” background, similarity takes the shape of a gnoseological form, a scrutinizing showing, which often compares by negation and can conveys truth or confusion.
“Nella comunità alla quale apparteniamo, nel paese dove nasciamo, risiede la nostra nozione del colore; e la nostra misura d’uomo è regolata su un ordine bioetnico delle somiglianze. Sono l’assoluto fisiognomico e l’assoluto cromatico, calati nel crogiuolo della terra natìa, a modulare il nostro consistere”. Il brano di Antonio Castelli, scrittore castelbuonese amico di Sciascia, viene riportato in Cruciverba, a proposito di Antonello da Messina il cui ritratto dell’ignoto marinaio è al museo Mandralisca di Cefalù e lo ritroviamo nella voce Antificu, Identico, presente in Occhio di capra. Questo ordine bioetnico delle somiglianze è una sorta di fil rouge dell’opera sciasciana, vuoi in quanto riferito alla sicilitudine (al modo di essere siciliani), vuoi perché arma analogica che comporta lo scavo anche psicologico (in alcuni polizieschi o nelle ricostruzioni saggistiche e inquisitoriali), vuoi come modo di comprensione del contesto e della vita che nel contesto accade, vale a dire del potere, della giustizia, della libertà che al potere e alla giustizia è connaturata. E la misura umana in quell’osservatorio che sono i nostri luoghi di origine è già capacità di giudizio, crea già un dato valoriale e assiologico che orienta la nostra comprensione del mondo.
Il contributo ricostruisce la costellazione della narrativa italiana contemporanea più ‘strana’, soprannominata ‘new Italian weird’ nel dibattito on line che ha accompagnato il fenomeno editoriale ...tra il 2016 e il 2018, e la raffronta con i suoi corrispettivi negli Stati Uniti e in Europa per ragionare su come e perché i sistemi letterari si trasformano nel tempo. Una lettura semiologica e polisistemica ha permesso di ricondurre le modalità di questo recente sentire letterario a una più ampia condizione della contemporaneità, il cui carattere esasperato è stato definito anche in termini di ipermodernità e che oggi sembrerebbe implicare una sempre maggiore ibridazione tra i generi del romanzo. A caratterizzare questa nuova forma di letteratura, a suo modo estrema, è il ricorso al ‘weird’, qui inteso non come genere a sé ma come dispositivo ‘obliquo’, impiegato per aprire nuove prospettive e per oltrepassare gli stretti confini e le limitate possibilità di senso del reale.
Giulio Cesare Croce (1550-1609) was a polygraph who composed several poetical works that describe the daily life of the Bolognese people. This paper examines Alfabeto de’ giuocatori, a poem dedicated ...to the theme of the game and of the vices and virtues of the players. The author analyzes the poem and discusses the transmission of the text and philological variants. The article is concluded by the critical edition and the commentary (regarding philological, linguistic, lessical and literary aspects).
Giovanni Verga’s tale Libertà has often been object of multifaceted – and frequently discording –critical interpretations, being the most common readings those of who saw in it a clear bias for the ...Italian Risorgimento (despite its violent development), and those who read it as an expression of resilient skepticism by the author towards the same historic event. Leonardo Sciascia, for example, uses the term “mystification” to describe Verga’s attitude towards Bronte’s insurrection, at a time – 1860 – when Garibaldi was carrying out his well-known Expedition of the Thousand.
The essay goes through all the noteworthy moments of this critical tradition, eventually deducting that it is by no means possible to draw firm assertions about Verga’s political ideology with the sole literary work as a point of reference. It argues instead that the author’s literary eminence must be seen in his outstanding ability to raise such a vast array of multilayered interpretations in the readers.
Belles infidèles is a French expression highlighting a well-known problem in translating from one language to another. This is true especially in the field of literature and particularly in poetry, ...where the exterior aspects of the words (for example, the harmony of rhymes, the images, the emotional vibrations, the semantic fields, the polysemy, and so on) become substantial and hardly translatable. The essay focuses on some bad translations of some selected verses from the obscene poems by a 18th-century Sicilian dialect poet, Domenico Tempio: they clearly show the translators’ intervention, who took many liberties and betrayed the formulation, the sense and the effect of the original texts. The essay proposes some more faithful translations of them.
