At the last two meetings of the Discussion Club of Literary Critics – a permanent scientific seminar of the Institute of Slavic Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences – the reports continued to ...cover the topic “Literary contours of modern Central and South-Eastern Europe: events, realities, trends”. The first session of this cycle took place in June 2022 and was devoted to the current literary situation in Bulgaria, Romania and Serbia. The DCL participants discussed a number of issues related to the numerous productions of Russian literature on the Slovak stage, which testify to the permanent interest in the “Russian theme” among the Slovak theater audience; perception of the image of Russia and Russians in Slavic fiction, reflection of Russian realities and disclosure of the problem of contact of cultures, the formation and existence of national stereotypes (based on a contemporary Czech novel), as well as translations of Slavic fantastic works into Russian, the current state of science fiction literature in Russia and other Slavic countries. In addition, some of the trends observed in the current literary process in Slovakia and the Czech Republic were discussed. The reports focused on the most significant new book releases, the mechanism for awarding literary prizes, such phenomena as the inevitable influence of politics and public life on literature, and the commercialization of the latter. The DCL participants reflected on what factors of the non-literary process can affect the prestige of the institute of literature, what can attract / scare off readers, why they prefer world classics over the works of modern Slavic authors, and also compared the situation in Slovakia and the Czech Republic with the state of the literary process in other Slavic countries.
In this interview, conducted on Zoom on August 16, 2021 and continued via email, British Pakistani author Mohsin Hamid discusses his role as a writer, focusing on his 2017 novel Exit West which was ...shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize that year. Hamid reflects on a variety of issues, including the right to migration; "mongrelisation"; the politics of awards; censorship; identity politics; cancel culture (with reference to Afghanistan); his experiences of crossing borders between Pakistan, Britain, and the US; and his meticulous exploration of politically challenging themes. Hamid's observations place writing at the locus of a complex web of social, cultural, and economic relationships. He also speaks about refugees, nation states, his connection with Kashmir, and other matters related to his writing, including the suspicion with which Muslims are viewed in many parts of the world and the use of a futurist time frame in Exit West.
Alice Munro, Michael Ondaatje, Margaret Atwood, Antonine Maillet, Carol Shields, Marie-Claire Blais, Gilles Vigneault... Canadian writers have long been recognized on the national and international ...stage, and the Governor General s Literary Awards have been instrumental in recognizing many of Canada s best authors, illustrators and translators. The list is impressive: in fact, between 1936 and 2017, 705 books received this prestigious award. Andrew Irvine presents the history and evolution of the Awards and extols their importance for the careers of authors, illustrators and translators, as well as for the development of Canada s national literature. The heart of the book is the first comprehensive, scholarly bibliography of the awards, including the first list of winning titles organized in their historically correct award categories; information about five books wrongly omitted from previous lists of winning titles; detailed information about award ceremonies, film adaptations, jury members; and other key information. This is the first of a three-volume series on the Governor General s Literary Awards, setting the stage for an anthology of excerpts of award-winning titles and a collection of vignettes of all Governor General s Literary Award laureates.
In 2020 the University of Kansas Libraries began a year-long diversity audit of the circulating monograph collection. The study, which utilized the checklist method evaluated the Libraries' holdings ...based on a curated list of award winning and nominated titles. In addition to determining if specific titles were part of the collection, the study also sought to learn how these books were acquired. The study found that the library owned 60% of the 6,671 titles checked and of those with a known acquisitions method, 59% came via an approval plan. Titles and publishers not profiled by GOBI were significantly less likely to be in the collection as they were not included in the approval plan or highlighted by a slip notification. The Libraries' reliance on GOBI and efficient and streamlined selection and acquisition processes has resulted in a less diverse collection.
The awarding of a prize to a work of art is meant to convey something about the value of that work in the world. But art prizes always provoke questions that evade easy answering: what purpose do ...prizes serve? What visions of life are promoted when we choose one book over another? How do the judges arrive at their choices? This response tells a partial story about the process of judging a literary award and what informs the event of decision-making. I frame the exercise as an illuminating immersion in the mood and feeling of the literature currently being published in South Africa.
