From 1896 to 1940, the “Lettres étrangères” section of the Mercure de France magazine presented foreign literatures and cultures in the form of more or less regular columns aimed at a cultivated ...French-speaking readership. Romania made its debut in 1905 under the pen of Marcel Montandon, a Swiss art critic and columnist born in Bucharest and living in Munich, who delivered 38 in-depth and regular articles until 1914. The presentation of this little-known corpus and its author provides an insight into the wealth of Romanian cultural production during this period, the arguments of the time and the choices and opinions of the author, standing as a cultural mediator between two intellectual worlds.
The article constitutes a report on the publication Une histoire de la phrase française des Serments de Strasbourg aux écritures numériques A History of French Sentence from the “Oaths of Strasbourg” ...to Digital Writing published under the direction of Gilles Siouffi. The notion of a sentenceseems nowadays so widely shared that we could be tempted to think that all over the history it was an obvious thing. Texts used by the authors demonstrate the contrary, they show that a sentence was for a long time contending with little success against competitive concepts (such as period, proposition, to mention just the most important ones) and that it is the outcome of a complicated history relating to various areas of the social life: political history, literary history, technical innovations, language analyses, etc. Apart from the authors’ erudition and their ability to include linguistic thinking into the common history, this work seduces by the contrast between texts certified and the model of a sentence, which contemporary French speakers have encoded.
After Rudolf Fuchs fled Prague for London following the 1938 Munich Agreement, he embarked on the task of compiling an almanac featuring German-speaking authors from Czechoslovakia. This endeavor ...continued until shortly before his accidental death in 1942. The article explores Fuchs' motivation for pursuing this intended publication. It investigates the almanac's purpose, the selection of authors and texts, and the criteria that texts and authors had to meet to be included in the almanac.

Spelman focuses on staging the literary history in old comedy. Literary history now presents itself as a conspicuously problematic category of thought and practice. Increasing scrutiny into the ...methods of contemporary scholarship parallels increasing interest in its ancient antecedents. Here, the author comprehensively examines one early chapter in that history which has not previously been studied as such. Much has been written about comic poetics, but investigating this particular topic might pay dividends both for our understanding of the plays themselves and for our understanding of the development of ancient literary history. Indeed, it is around this time that some concepts structuring much of later literary history, both ancient and modern, appear to be taking hold.
