The aim of this study is to estimate the effects of tourism growth on residential stability in two cities: Amsterdam, The Netherlands, and Barcelona, Spain. Our focus is on short-term rentals ...advertised on Airbnb, which have been used to compute a measure of pressure on the available housing stock over a period of three years (2017–2019). The hypothesis was made that this measure would correlate with the average duration of residence in Amsterdam, and with the percentage of long-term residents in Barcelona, after controlling for rent and house prices, and demographic trends. Fixed effects panel regression models, with area and time-specific intercepts, are used to test the hypothesis. We found that negative externalities of Airbnb for residential stability are consistent in both cities, although these are mostly associated with a rent increase in Amsterdam, as opposed to rising property values in Barcelona. These results largely reflect the structural differences in tenure regimes and housing policies between the two case studies. More importantly, however, they point to a process of progressive social disinvestment in tourism destinations fuelled by the departure of long-term residents. The implications of our findings for urban policies in a post-pandemic scenario are discussed.

The present study investigates the possible impact of language ideologies on second language proficiency. Based on interviews and a thematic analysis, we explored language ideologies among French ...long-term residents in Stockholm, Sweden. The participants had contrasting proficiency levels in the host community language: five were categorised as low-performers of Swedish and five as high-performers of Swedish, based on two linguistic measures. Overall, low-performing and high-performing language users in this sample of French long-term residents in Sweden appear to hold different ideologies related to mobility and language learning. While the low-performers tend to adhere to efficiency-related ideologies and a universalist cosmopolitan worldview, where English as a lingua franca is the most significant capital, the high-performers adhere to ideologies that are more identity-based and closer to assimilationist or nationalist views, where the participants see themselves as joining a majority culture into which they should adapt. High host language proficiency is seen as necessary capital for this. All in all, the study makes a clear case for further studies exploring language ideologies in relation to second language acquisition.
This article examines social disadvantage in tourist sites through the lens of labour geography by focusing on the residential trajectories of a sample of workers in Barcelona (N = 8,651) over a ...decade (2008-2019). Contrasting with the common view that tourism growth brings prosperity to local communities, it suggests instead that buoyant destinations may be prone to leaving their workforces behind. Path analysis modelling reveals that tourism sector workers are at a higher risk of residential displacement. Our analysis unearths stratifications in such results, pointing to different tactics to cope with housing market pressure depending on sex, age, and nationality. Residential displacement and the self-imposed devaluation of housing conditions are introduced in this paper as key avenues leading to social exclusion. In this sense, we contribute to the concern of critical tourism geographies with the inequality and disadvantage ingrained in tourist space production, bridging to the domain of labour geography and social mobility. The city of Barcelona offers a template for other urban contexts that have been reliant on tourism as a major driver of economic growth in recent decades. Following the call for closer attention to labour in the debate on transitions to sustainability in tourism, our results hint at future research avenues that extend their interpretation.
Objectives
This article assessed whether disparities among ADRD Medicare beneficiaries existed in five different long-stay quality measures. Methods: We linked individual-level data and ...facility-level characteristics. The main quality outcomes included whether residents: 1) were assessed/appropriately given the seasonal influenza vaccine; 2) received an antipsychotic medication; 3) experienced one/more falls with major injury; 4) were physically restrained; and 5) lost too much weight. Results: In 2016, there were 1,005,781 Medicare Advantage and fee-for-service long-term residents. About 78% were White, 13% Black, 2% Asian/Pacific Islander (Asian/PI), 6% Hispanic, and 0.4% American Indian/Alaska Native (AI/AN). Whites reported higher use of antipsychotic medications along with Hispanics and AI/AN (28%, 28%, and 27%, respectively). Similarly, Whites and AIs/ANs reported having one/more falls compared to the other groups (9% and 8%, respectively). Discussion: Efforts to understand disparities in access and quality of care among American Indians/Alaska Natives are needed, especially post-pandemic.
The cautious approach of European Legislators towards the integration of non-EU third country nationals (TCNs), mirrored in the provisions of Long-Term Residence Directive 2003/109/EC, has brought ...about the creation of 'spatial temporal waiting zones'. Migrants are confined in both place and time before being able to access the (as of yet, very limited) mobility rights conferred upon them by the Directive. Restricted mobility rights for TCNs can seriously impinge on the economic growth of the EU. This paper reveals three 'faults' of the current system. First, we show how TCNs already evade 'temporal borders' by moving across geographical ones to take up employment before being entitled to do so under the provisions of the Directive. Next, we show how formal integration in one member state (MS), paradoxically, opens the door to another MS and, third, how a second MS fights off these near-EU citizens. Finally, we observe the importance of taking the phenomenon of spatial and temporal waiting zones into account, not only when structuring intra-EU mobility policies for TCNs but also when addressing the issue of the (labour market) integration of recent arrivals: soon they too will become European long-term residents.
In this paper, the contribution of the staff of the Research Institute of Art Industry to the study of Russian long-term resident population on the territory of the Altai Krai, which up to 1990 ...included Gorno-Altai Autonomous Region, is presented and analyzed. The analysis is conducted on the basis of studying the collection of the field materials by identifying all expeditions which took place, their routes, participants, and results of the field re-search. The main sources of the research were represented by the archival funds of the institute, which appeared to be fragmentary. The main part of the materials was deposited to the Russian National Museum of Decorative, Applied and Folk Arts. For the subject of this paper, the reports on scientific topics and field trips are of the most interest; an extensive body of visual sources (sketches and photographs) have been used as well, whose superior quality was achieved through participation of professional staff artists and photographers in their production. The population of the Altai Krai (modern Altai Krai and the Altai Republic) were embraced in the field work in the 1950s — 4 expeditions (1951, 1954, 1955, and 1956) and one in 1979. The initial interest was in the culture of the Turkic-speaking population and Turkic traditions of rug weaving and ornamentation. The later expeditions were conducted by two groups — on the study of Turkic and Russian populations. The main objects of the research were architecture, house construction and decoration, weaving, homeware and household appliances and other items which preserved the traces of the long-term residence culture. The revelation for the researchers from the institute was the abundant presence of wooden house carving, both as fragments and as whole complexes. The objects and pieces of art recorded by the researchers are the unique sources which had already disappeared by the 1970s. Part of the collections kept in the Russian National Museum of Decorative, Applied and Folk Arts has primary field materials. These sources were partially published in the works of art historians, but their great eth-nographical potential is not yet exhausted.
In WS and VR the Court of Justice interpreted the right to equal treatment afforded by EU law to third-country nationals holding a single permit or a long-term resident’s status as preventing ...national provisions which, differently from nationals and EU citizens, exclude their family members residing abroad from the calculation of a family unit allowance. While the two rulings upheld an established trend in Italian national case law, the reasoning of the Court raises critical concerns over the correct identification of the beneficiaries of family benefits. Thus, the interpretation supported by the Court is likely to restrict the scope of the right to equal treatment in an unexpected way. Having analysed the two judgments, the present paper discusses why the Court should have taken a different position in that specific regard.
Aim: This study aims to clarify the experiences of mid-to-long-term residents of Japan with type 2 diabetes who were being followed up at a hospital.Methods: A semi-structured interview was conducted ...among 6 mid-to-long-term residents with type 2 diabetes who were being followed up at a hospital in Japan. Their responses were analyzed using the KJ method, a qualitative synthesis method; then, the whole analysis was performed.Results: Individual analysis of the responses of the 6 residents was conducted, and 39 concepts were derived. As a result of the whole analysis, 7 categories were extracted from the interview data: “the fear of diabetes observed in Japan,” “the self-management approach applied in Japanese medical care is better than their home country,” “the self-treatment method without medical staff reliance,” “the difference in the food culture between my home country and Japan in terms of its impact on self-management,” “my own life with diabetes,” “the fear and anxiety associated with living with diabetes in different countries,” and “the expectations of foreigners for diabetes treatment.”Conclusions: The self-management of mid- to long-term residents and their lives with diabetes were affected by the cultural gap with respect to a participant’s home country and how Japanese medical care was implemented, indicating the presence of specific contributing factors and conditions. Therefore, the consideration of the need to address cultural diversity is recommended.
