The overuse of antibiotics has posed a propagation of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in aquaculture systems. This study firstly explored the ARGs profiles of the typical mariculture farms including conventional and recirculating systems using metagenomics approach. Fifty ARGs subtypes belonging to 21 ARGs types were identified, showing the wide-spectrum profiles of ARGs in the coastal industrial mariculture systems. ARGs with multiple antibiotics resistance have emerged in the mariculure systems. The co-occurrence pattern between ARGs and microbial taxa showed that Proteobacteria and Bacteroidetes were potential dominant hosts of ARGs in the industrial mariculture systems. Typical nitrifying bacteria such as Nitrospinae in mariculture systems also carried with some resistance genes. Relative abundance of ARGs in fish ponds and wastewater treatment units was relatively high. The investigation showed that industrial mariculture systems were important ARGs reservoirs in coastal area, indicating the critical role of recirculating systems in the terms of ARGs pollution control.
Field determination of the metal adsorption capacity of microplastics (MPs) by using a passive sampler had been done in typical subtropical mariculture area in China. The adsorption of eight metals ...(Fe, Mn, Cu, Zn, As, Pb, Cr and Cd) by five types of MPs (low-density polyethylene, polypropylene, polystyrene, poly(ethylene terephthalate) and poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) was compared, including metal types, mariculture types (cage and longline culture), metal residue content in ambient environment, polymer types and particle sizes of MPs. The results showed that Cu, Zn, As, Cd, Pb and Cr in the mariculture environment were contaminated compared with the quality criteria. The concentrations of these six metals adsorbed on five MPs increased linearly with those in seawater. More enriched Cu and As in MPs in marine cage culture than in longline culture, due to the obvious endogenous pollution emissions for the artificial diets, fish medicine and disinfectants. Aged PVC with more cracks and pores showed higher metal adsorption capacity than any other polymers. MPs with a smaller size range of 50–74 μm tended to accumulate higher amounts of metals than those with a larger size range of 74–178 μm, consisting with the surface characteristics of MPs. The significant positive relationship between the concentrations of nutrients in seawater and the adsorption amounts of Cu, Zn and As on MPs implies that the eutrophication would promote their pollution. Based on the ecological risk assessment, the occurrence of MPs could aggravate the potential risk of metals to marine organisms in intensive mariculture areas. This is the first time to reveal the impacts of the adsorption of metals on aged MPs on the potential ecological risks of metals to organisms under the realistic environmental condition.

Mariculture stands as a pivotal enterprise aimed at enhancing the quality of human existence. However, the utilization of antibiotics and pesticides in the mariculture process poses threats to both ...the environment and human well-being. Therefore, it is of great significance to investigate the occurrence, distribution and risk of antibiotics and pesticides in mariculture areas. In this study, 11 kinds of antibiotics and 12 kinds of pesticides were screened in four mariculture areas around Liaodong Peninsula in China. The pollution characteristics of pollutants were investigated in three different mariculture stages. The pollution in the reproduction stage was the most serious, indicating that mariculture may have a potential impact on the surrounding seawater. Health risk assessment results indicate that the pollutants have a significant risk to human health, therefore it is necessary to strengthen the control of chemicals used in mariculture in future.

In order to strengthen the management of aquaculture sea and realize the sustainable development of mariculture industry in China, based on the definition of the types of aquaculture sea, this paper ...comprehensively evaluated the current situation and existing problems of aquaculture sea in China, and put forward countermeasures and suggestions. The results showed that the aquaculture sea usage included open mariculture and cofferdam mariculture. The area of aquaculture sea had shown an overall increasing trend, but a decreasing trend in recent years, and had the characteristics of uneven distribution, mainly open mariculture and cofferdam mariculture occupying a large number of natural shorelines. At present, there were some problems in China′s aquaculture sea, such as the squeeze of sea space, illegal use of sea, serious impact of marine disasters, marine ecological environment pollution, cross management and unclear rights and responsibilities. In the future, we should promote the supply side structural ref
The mangrove red snapper, Lutjanus argentimaculatus, is a marine fish of key economic and cultural importance in the Indo-Pacific region. It is now considered much more of an important aquaculture ...species than capture fisheries. The present study aimed to reveal the genetic structure of this candidate species from the Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal using microsatellite markers. Twelve microsatellite markers used for genetic stock characterization and 384 samples collected from six different locations were used for the study. Genetic characterization using microsatellite markers suggested a single unit stock of red snapper in the sampling region with sufficient gene flow between populations to restrict the genetic structuring. Genetic differentiation co-efficient analysis suggested lack of structuring between populations. However, Bayesian cluster analysis performed in STRUCTURE revealed some evidence of sub-structuring between the Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal populations. Hierarchical AMOVA analysis, Principal Coordinate Analysis (PCoA) and isolation by distance analysis offered some support to the above findings. The inability of microsatellites to detect population differentiation in this instance suggests the need for more powerful markers, like SNPs, to reveal the sub-structuring before appropriate management practices can be developed for the mangrove red snapper in Indian waters.

Coastal bays serve as undeniable dissolved organic matter (DOM) reactors and the role of prevalent mariculture in DOM cycling deserves investigation. This study, based on four seasonal field ...samplings and a laboratory incubation experiment, examined the source and seasonal dynamics of DOM and fluorescent dissolved organic matter (FDOM) in the seawater of fish (Larimichthys crocea, LC), seaweed (Gracilaria lemaneiformis, GL) and abalone (Haliotis sp., HA) culturing zones in Sansha Bay, China. Using three-dimensional fluorescence spectroscopy coupled with parallel factor analysis (EEMs-PARAFAC), three fluorescent components were identified, i.e. protein-like C1, protein-like C2, and humic-like C3. Our results showed that mariculture activities dominated the DOM pool by seasonal generating abundant DOM with lower aromaticity and humification degrees. Accounting for 40–95 % of total fluorescent components, C1 (Ex/Em = 300/340 nm) was regarded the same as D1 (Ex/Em = 300/335 nm) identified in a 180-day degradation experiments of G. lemaneiformis detritus, indicating that the cultured seaweed modulated DOM through the seasonal production of C1. In addition, the incubation experiment revealed that 0.7 % of the total carbon content of seaweed detritus could be preserved as recalcitrant dissolved organic carbon (RDOC). However, fish culture appeared to contribute to liable DOC and protein-like C2, exerting a substantial impact on DOM during winter but making a negligible contribution to carbon sequestration, while abalone culture might promote the potential export and sequestration of seaweed-derived carbon to the ocean. Our results highlight the influences of mariculture activities, especially seaweed culture, in shaping DOM pool in coastal bays. These findings can provide reference for future studies on the carbon accounting of mariculture.

To date, there is a lack of systematic investigation on the elemental sulfur-driven autotrophic denitrification (SDAD) process for removing nitrate (NO3−-N) from mariculture wastewater deficient in ...organic carbon sources. Therefore, a packed-bed reactor was established and continuously operated for 230 days to investigate the operation performance, kinetic characteristics and microbial community of SDAD biofilm process. Results indicate that the NO3−-N removal efficiencies and rates varied with the operational conditions including HRT (1–4 h), influent concentrations of NO3−-N (25–100 mg L−1) and DO (0.2–7.0 mg L−1), and temperature (10oC–30 °C), in the ranges of 51.4%–98.6% and 0.054–0.546 g L−1 d−1, respectively. Limestone could partially neutralize the produced acidity. Small portions of NO3−-N were converted to nitrite (<4.5%) and ammonia (<2.8%) in the reactor. Operational conditions also influenced the production of acidity, nitrite and ammonia as well as sulfate. Shortening HRT and increasing influent NO3−-N concentration turned the optimal fitting model depicting the NO3−-N removal along the reactor from half-order to zero-order. Furthermore, the NO3−-N removal was accelerated by a higher temperature and influent NO3−-N concentration and a lower HRT and influent DO concentration. Microbial richness, evenness and diversity gradually decreased during the autotrophic denitrifier enrichment cultivation and the reactor start-up and operation. Sulfurimonas constituted the predominate genus and the primary functional bacteria in the reactor. This study highlights the SDAD as a promising way to control the coastal eutrophication associated with mariculture wastewater discharge.

The ecological transformation and development of mariculture industry is of great significance to improve the marine resources and environment, promote the green development of aquaculture industry ...and meet the market demand for high-quality aquatic products. Based on panel data of 10 coastal provinces and cities in China from 2009 to 2018, the ecologicalization efficiency of mariculture industry and its influencing factors were analyzed from the two dimensions of industry system and ecological environment system. Firstly, the ecologicalization efficiency of mariculture industry in 10 coastal provinces and cities of China was measured by SBM-DEA model based on undesired output, and then the influencing factors of the ecologicalization of mariculture industry were explored by tail-breaking regression model. The results showed that the ecologicalization efficiency of mariculture industry in China showed a fluctuating upward trend, but it was still at a low level and there was a large space for improvement. The ecologicalization efficiency of mariculture industry is high in Hainan, medium in Shandong, Liaoning, Tianjin, Guangxi, Guangdong, Hebei and Fujian, and low in Zhejiang and Jiangsu, with obvious characteristics of spatial differentiation and unbalanced development. The per capita net income of fishermen, output value level of mariculture and mariculture structure have a significant positive effect on the improvement of the ecologicalization of mariculture industry in China, while the mariculture scale, technical personnel qualifications, aquaculture technology infrastructure, aquaculture technology promotion spending, fishermen training level and mariculture disaster loss rate have no obvious effect on the ecologicalization efficiency of mariculture industry.
