Terrestrial astroblems discovery and characterization made considerable improvements thanks to satellite imagery and technological and data-processing progress of measuring apparatuses. Indeed, the oldest craters were eroded and the reliefs resulting from these meteoritic impacts do not exist any more and only several indications such as gravimetric or geological variations, hydrographie network modification, etc. , still let suppose the former existence of an extraterrestrial object fall. The example of the Shoemaker-Levy 9 comet multiple collision on Jupiter, shows that asteroids can split and impact a planet producing astroblems' alignments. The aim of this study is to check posssible craters' alignments on the Earth's surface. Considering their various ages, it is necessary to recount each continent's paleogegraphy at the age considered before deferring the astroblem's position. This method has yet allowed to discover some interesting alignments.
This thesis is focused on the contribution of the coupling of multi-scale organization and C, N isotopic composition of carbons in differentiated meteorites (acapulcoites – lodranites (A-L)), in order to better understand the history of their parent body. We systematically combined observations of carbons from these meteorites with experimental analogues. We developed an original methodology associating the study of the organization at the micrometre to nanometre scales (by Transmission Electron Microscopy and by Raman Microspectrometry), and the analysis of the isotopic composition of carbons (by SIMS) on strictly the same areas of micrometre dimensions. The comparison with experimental analogues indicates that the Acapulco graphite was formed by a "catalytic" graphitization mode. The absence of graphite in Lodran, in an iron-rich and hot environment, is apparently paradoxical. All our observations can be reconciled if we consider a late collision of the A-L parent body with a chondritic body bringing insoluble organic matter and impact heat. This scenario is strengthened by isotopic analyses, which indicate formation of A-L carbons by carbonization of a chondritic precursor and migration of carbonaceous effluents within the parent-body
One of the challenges of planetary science is the age determination of the surfaces of the different celestial bodies in the solar system, to understand their formation and evolution processes. An approach relies on the analysis of the crater impact density and size. Due to the huge quantity of data to process, automatic approaches have been proposed for automatically detecting impact craters in order to facilitate this dating process. They generally use the color values from images or the elevation values from Digital Elevation Model (DEM). In this PhD thesis, we propose a new approach for detecting craters rims. The main idea is to combine curvature analysis with Neural Network based classification. This approach contains two main steps: first, each vertex of the mesh is labeled with the value of the minimal curvature; second, this curvature map is injected into a neural network to automatically detect the shapes of interest. The results show that detecting forms are more efficient using a two-dimensional map based on the computation of discrete differential estimators, than by the value of the elevation at each vertex. This approach significantly reduces the number of false negatives compared to previous approaches based on topographic information only. The validation of the method is performed on DEMs of Mars, acquired by a laser altimeter aboard NASA’s Mars Global Surveyor spacecraft and combined with a database of manually identified craters.
The Lebanese Atomic Energy Commission (LAEC) is incorporated in a development program of the analytical techniques in order to complete the Ion Beam Analysis (IBA). It was decided to get a mass spectrometer coupled to 2D and recently to 3D imaging, by acquiring an ION TOFVTM system equipped with two ionic columns delivering bismuth and argon cluster beams. In this context, my thesis is focused on the optimization of the instrument, recently purchased, for the analysis of samples containing organic compounds. The first subjects of research are the development of a protocol for quantitative analysis of drugs using the « cluster-SIMS-imaging » technique and the Paris meteorite analysis to determine its composition and to localize the organic matter. In the last case a multi-techniques approach was used : IBA in LAEC, µ-Raman et µ-IR around the Soleil synchrotron equipments and µPIXE carried with the AGLAE accelerator (Centre de recherche et de restauration des musées de France, C2RMF).The drug analysis was initiated in Lebanon in collaboration with a local pharmaceutical manufacturer (Mediphar Laboratories) in order to establish new processes for quality control of the final products. My study showed the complexity of the drug quantification which is due to the presence of several active ingredients (AI) and inactive organic and minerals components (excipients) mixed in secret conditions. Matrix effects are dominant and modify the ionic emission leading to significant systematic errors. This complexity has been analyzed with the study of FludiniumTM with two active ingredients. The results of this study allowed to obtain the first calibration curves of the ratio between the two AIs and to quantify them in the commercial drug. The protocol to perform the calibration curve and the « quality» controls were determined. These incorporate a profile analysis to control the homogeneity of the samples and the obtaining standards produced by the pharmaceutical manufacturer following the same process used for the commercial drug. Indeed, the experiments have shown that the preparation of the drug in the laboratory from its elements (AIs and excipients) doesn’t give the same ionic emission as for the commercial drug. The Paris meteorite analysis was initiated by a collaboration with the Institut d’Astrophysique Spatiale d’Orsay team involved in the exobiology and the research of the first prebiotic molecules in the extraterrestrial samples. The work objective is to characterize the organic matter representing few percents in mass in a complex mineral matrix, without any chemical extraction that can induce a modification of these molecules. This study has demonstrated the interest of the multi-techniques approach centered on the mass spectrometry coupled to the ionic imaging for the determination of the main mineral and organic elements of the matrix. µPIXE analysis coupled to the micrometric mapping permits to attribute the distribution of molecular ions and clusters of the mass spectra with different mineral compounds. These attributions continue with the creation of the data base of standard spectra. The organic component was determined and the first hypotheses were considered concerning PAHs (Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon), IOM (Insoluble Organic Matter) and analogues of amorphous carbon produced par UV irradiation of ices with a gas composition representing different hypotheses for the interstellar clouds. The establish protocols for multi-techniques (incorporating a follow of the sample by mass spectrometry and ion imaging) permits to start the analysis of other extra terrestrial samples collected on earth or in space.
Foum Tatahouine is one of the rare meteorites that allow studying weathering effects since their fall on Earth. The comparison between clasts collected the very day of the fall (1931) and in 1994 ...showed some chemical modifications. We report data obtained on samples collected in 2000. The purpose of this study is: (1) to define (REE, Sr isotopes) the terrestrial weathering origin that is to be found in soil carbonates, (2) to show (Sr, Rb, REE) that the weathering effects are small on centimetre-sized samples, and (3) to emphasise (HREE) Foum Tatahouine samples heterogeneity.
