Following Niall Ferguson’s assertion that “a catastrophe lays bare the societies and states that it strikes”, this article studies the society of the Dalmatian town of Split through the lens of the ...various threats it was exposed to around the year 1500, as well as the precautionary measures taken in their anticipation. Based on broad archival evidence, four areas are studied: the military threat posed chiefly by the Ottomans, emigration and depopulation, epidemics, and civil discontent. The study of these measures, ranging from appeasing Ottoman officials to burning infected people’s property, offers new insights into the structures of a society between Venetian rule and Ottoman menace in the Renaissance period.

L’articolo analizza le modalità attraverso cui la sovranità statale fonda la propria legittimità sul controllo della mobilità umana. Lo fa attraverso il caso dei visti di entrata, con particolare ...riferimento ai visti europei, Schengen e non, nella gestione delle frontiere esterne europee con l’Africa Occidentale. Il regime dei visti esprime in forma diretta ed esplicita il potere sovrano dello Stato nei confronti del movimento di persone. Discutendo casi etnografici concreti, il saggio decostruisce, tuttavia, il rapporto tra esercizio effettivo e legittimazione del controllo. L’amministrazione dei visti dipende, sia direttamente che indirettamente, dalla capacità regolatrice di altre istituzioni e attori, come le famiglie dei richiedenti. Si mostra pertanto come il lavoro consolare costituisca anche una performance legittimante dello Stato nei confronti di questa situazione di controllo diffuso.
Few phenomena have been more disruptive to West European politics and society than the accumulative experience of post-WWII immigration. Against this backdrop spring two questions: Why have the ...immigrant-receiving states historically permitted high levels of immigration? To what degree can the social and political fallout precipitated by immigration be politically managed? Utilizing evidence from a variety of sources, this study explores the links between immigration and the surge of popular support for anti-immigrant groups; its implications for state sovereignty; its elevation to the policy agenda of the European Union; and its domestic legacies. It argues that post-WWII migration is primarily an interest-driven phenomenon that has historically served the macroeconomic and political interests of the receiving countries. Moreover, it is the role of politics in adjudicating the claims presented by domestic economic actors, foreign policy commitments, and humanitarian norms that creates a permissive environment for significant migration to Western Europe.
In this article, the author proposes three layers of film analysis and spectatorship in order to discuss film director Elia Moutamid's oeuvre. The first layer refers to the filmic texts (plots and ...aesthetics), the second situates the films in their socio-historical and cinematographic contexts, and the third layer relates the films to Plato's simile of the cave, establishing their philosophical quality. The author argues that the interrelation between these various layers attests to the refinement of Moutamid's cinematic production.
This article explores how two recent configurations of the Albanian sworn virgin prompt a reflection on the intersection of transgender discourses with questions of transnational mobility. Elvira ...Dones's novel Vergine giurata and its eponymous cinematic adaptation (directed by Laura Bispuri) imagine in diverging ways the material and symbolic disruptions that occur when this tribally sanctioned figure leaves Albania for another nation. Novel and film suggest to different degrees how this distinctive transgender figure challenges binary regimes of heteronormativity and the power-knowledge systems underpinning them, revealing contrasting investments in the possibilities of the sworn virgin's integration into the respective migratory settings.
Riassunto Il presente articolo analizza la solidarietà ai migranti in transito nell’Europa della “crisi dell’accoglienza” attraverso lo studio di caso della Val Roja, una piccola valle francese al ...confine con l’Italia. Il contributo contestualizza il ritorno delle frontiere interne in Europa e si focalizza sulle forme, gli attori e le pratiche della solidarietà ai migranti in questa valle. Si tratta di una solidarietà endogena, che nasce in particolare dalle reti di neorurali e si struttura attorno a valori condivisi, oltreché ad un determinato approccio di difesa del territorio. Allo stesso tempo, voci ostili ai migranti e alla solidarietà emergono, all’interno di un conflitto sociale tra i nativi – le cosiddette familles de souches – e i più recenti abitanti. L’articolo si basa su una ricerca etnografica di un anno e mezzo, svolta attraverso un processo di immersione nella realtà locale e l’uso di tecniche quali l’osservazione partecipante e le interviste semi-strutturate.
Abstract This article analyzes solidarity with migrants in transit in Europe at the time of the « reception crisis » through the case study of the Roya Valley, a small French valley on the border with Italy. The contribution contextualises the return of internal borders in Europe and it focuses on the forms, actors and practices of solidarity with migrants in this valley. This is an endogenous solidarity, which arises in particular from the neorural networks and it is structured around common values, as well as a specific approach to defense of the territory. At the same time, hostile voices towards migrants and solidarity emerge, within a social conflict between natives – the so-called familles de souche – and the more recent inhabitants. The article is based on a one and a half year ethnographic research, through a process of immersion in the local reality, using tecniques as participatory observation and semi-structured interviews.
Riassunto Il numero crescente di famiglie migranti con minori disabili invita a riflettere sul tema dell’accoglienza e delle politiche sociali. Come evidenziato dalla ricerca “Alunni con disabilità, ...figli di migranti” condotta a Bologna, risulta necessario che i servizi alla persona e le istituzioni scolastiche - Enti che collaborano nella presa in carico del minore disabile - rinnovino le pratiche di accoglienza e di accompagnamento delle famiglie e dei minori disabili per rispondere in maniera adeguata ai bisogni emergenti. Considerato il numero esiguo di studi sul tema e la mancanza di linee guida ministeriali per definire interventi incentrati sulla “doppia diversità”, le criticità e le buone prassi individuate dalla ricerca assumono un valore paradigmatico e forniscono utili indicazioni estendibili anche ad altri contesti.
Le tendenze di rivalorizzazione degli spazi rurali e la loro conseguente gentrificazione è stata studiata con riferimento alla nozione di “amenity migration” (o migrazione ricreativa) in diversi ...contesti geografici. I nuovi abitanti mantengono le loro reti sociali nelle città e importano i loro stili di vita urbani nelle loro nuove case. Questo contributo si focalizza sulla (ri)negoziazione delle identità locali e della “conoscenza del territorio” a Verbier, un comprensorio sciistico nelle Alpi svizzere. Negli ultimi 50 anni, Verbier è evoluta dall’essere un piccolo borgo montano a una stazione sciistica dinamica. Attualmente, nuovi residenti e nuove popolazioni che praticano la cosiddetta residenzialità multi-locale contribuiscono a dare nuova forma alle comunità locali e alle rappresentazioni della località.
The proposals submitted for 2014 Compalit Conference highlighted the marginality, almost the disappearance, of that niche in contemporary narrative usually pointed at as migration writing. This ...omission compels to question the reasons for this absence of interest for a narrative which is considered as the main vehicle to represent the traumas of postmodernity, with a renewed hold on reality by the subaltern voices, pulled out from the silence of their social and geographical marginality, able in this way to place themselves at the centre of the cultural scene as a testimony of a necessary renewal of the poetical and political national imagery. Announced since the beginning (even in the absence of documented analysis) as a form of resistance writing, the texts produced within the field of Italian language have not managed yet to establish any eminent figure of multicultural intellectual, bearer of culturally and politically plausible proposals to face the transformation in the social fabric of the peninsula, in contrast with the apocalyptical discourse dominating the phenomenology of migrations. Played upon the repetition of themes, flattened on the autoficional testimony, the proposals of a first generation of neo-italophone writers have left the stage to the more lively delegates of the second generation, denied a full access to citizenship and deprived of a productive role, so that even renowned female writers have shown a predictable compliance of masks, poses and images. The absence of a wide transversal audience testifies a way of reading compromised by the phenomenology of the extra-textuality, where the instruments and symbols of an exotic otherness are generically valued - instruments and symbols unable to replace those defining the literary field of a Western periphery. The dominant didactic destination for this literature has created a perceptual paradigm based on the idea of a new “little Italy”, exiled within the instances of a marginal market, outside the publishing industry that counts, representing only one of those literatures of the exiguity (F. Paré), unsuitable to answer the need of a writing able to efficiently act on the social. This essay tackles the limits and the uncertainties of more than thirty narratives publishe between 2013 and 2014, showing the progressive dissolution (fostered by an excess of ponderings on definitions, sign of a control anxiety by a section of “white” academia) of Italian migrant literature.
