Microplastics (MPs) are recognized as a multifaceted stressor based on their physical effects due to particle size, shape, and concentration, and chemical effects ensuing from the use of hazardous chemicals. Evidence of the presence of MPs in food are increasing, and the number of publications on MPs in seafood has increased at an exponential rate in recent years. However analytical detection methods of MPs in seafood are limited even despite the available techniques that enable MP separation and size determination. The analytical detection of MPs requires obtaining information on both the chemical composition and the morphological structure of particles. No single technique is able to chemically and morphologically identify MPs, though a broad range of complementary analytical methodologies have been applied in the detection and identification of MPs. MPs can cause biological, chemical and physical health effects. In order to assess whether the uptake of MPs via seafood can pose a risk to human health, exposure must first be quantified and then it can be determined whether this exposure is high enough to have a detrimental effect. Human exposure to MP contained in food has become a significant concern owing to the increasing accumulation of microplastics in the environment. This paper provides an overview of the existing research on MP presence in seafood, including analytical methods for microplastic separation, and instrumental determination of concentration, shapes, and material types in complex biological material. Regulatory requirements and challenges to support fit-for-purpose research activities on this contaminant are summarized, and information provided for possible regulation on MPs in food.

The widespread use of plastics has led to the accumulation of plastics in all parts of the environment where it adversely affects the ecosystem. Plastic pollution has the biggest impact on the marine ecosystems which assimilate about 12.7 million tons of plastic yearly. Because of incomplete degradation, plastic in marine environment is accumulated in the form of large clusters and microplastic. Microplastic has a harmful impact on marine organisms due to the accumulation of toxic compounds adsorbed on its particles, which could be passed through the food chain and eventually to humans. Certain researches discussed in this paper are focused on the characterization and quantification of microplastic found in the Adriatic Sea.
Mikroplastika predstavlja ozbiljan problem u morskom i priobalnom okolišu.
Microplastics represent a major problem in the marine and coastal environment. In this work, microplastics from the sediment of Prapratno beach on the Pelješac Peninsula (Croatia) were analysed. Sampling and laboratory separation were performed according to the DeFishGear protocol ( Derelict Fishing Gear Management System in the Adriatic Region ). The microplastic waste from Prapratno beach sediment consisted of 116 specimens, which could be classified into 6 micro litter categories according to EU TG ML Master List (Fig. 1). Fragments were found to be the predominant category of microplastic waste from the sediment of Prapratno beach, followed by granules, films, pellets and foams, which were present in approximately the same number, while filaments were the least represented category (Fig. 2). The most important categories by mass were granules and fragments, followed by pellets, while films, foams and filaments made up a very small content of the total sample mass (Fig. 3). The numerical contents (Fig. 4), did not correspond to the mass contents (Fig. 3) of individual categories due to the different densities and thicknesses of the specimens in each category. Almost all the base colours were present in the analysed samples (Fig. 5), while 90.52 % of specimens were opaque (Fig. 6). The maximum dimension and surface area of each specimen was determined by Digimizer Image Analysis Software . Maximum dimensions in the range of 1–5 mm were observed in 52.59 % of the specimens, thus belonging to large microplastics (LMP), while 47.41 % of the specimens had maximum dimensions in the range of 5–20 mm, thus belonging to so-called mezzo litter. The distribution of specimen dimensions within LMP is shown in Fig. 8, and within mezzo litter in Fig. 9. The fraction of each category in the total sample surface area is shown in Fig. 10. These results are similar to the numerical fractions of categories, since the samples were generally in the narrow range of maximum dimensions, and thus their numerical fractions corresponded to their fraction in the total surface of the sample. Identification of plastic material was performed by infrared spectroscopy, HATR technique. The obtained spectra were compared with the spectra in the database (Fig. 11–13). The results showed (Fig. 14) that the microplastic waste from Prapratno beach was made of polyethylene (82.46 %), polystyrene (11.40 %) and polypropylene (6.14 %). These polymers came from plastic packaging since polyethylene, polystyrene and polypropylene are the most used polymers for plastic packaging.
The durability of plastics, plastic litter’s ability to “travel” on rivers and across long distances as well as to accumulate in the seas and remain in the environment for a long period pose a great ...danger, the solution to which raises a challenge at the global level. Microplastic is a part or piece of plastic smaller than 5 mm, although this name is also used for all “small” pieces of plastic. In recent years, there has been growing awareness that plastic waste needs to be urgently reduced, especially in the marine environment. The primary source of marine pollution is rivers, i.e., land-based sources. Large amounts of plastic flow into rivers, and their final destination is the seas. This paper presents data on the categorisation and types of plastics, quantities of plastics in the marine environment, and the problems that arise there. Pollution of the marine environment, marine litter, and pollution of the riverine environment are also discussed. Soft law dominates global efforts to address marine litter problems. There is currently no international treaty regulating plastic pollution, although some regulations include, among other things, provisions on the prevention of marine pollution. The paper aims to present the key provisions of relevant international sources of law governing pollution of the marine environment and the river environment. Whether they contain provisions related to (micro)plastics and plastic waste and whether they provide a sufficient legal framework to prevent plastic and river pollution are duly examined. The most important European directives and the laws of the Republic of Croatia relating to marine pollution, water pollution, and waste are presented in particular. Finally, proposals are made for solving the problem of plastic in the environment and for better legal regulation of this issue.
Većina tekstilnih proizvoda pod utjecajem parametara procesa pranja
mikro/nano čestica bojila, pigmenata, funkcionalnih tvari, ...tenzida,
omekšivača koji utječu na okolišne sustave. Vrsta i količina otpuštenih
čestica ovisi o sirovinskom sastavu materijala, stupnju oplemenjivanja i
trošnosti te uvjetima pranja. U radu je obrađena problematika
generiranja i otpuštanja fibrila, funkcionalnih čestica i čestica
mikroplastike.
Ni Jadransko more nije pošteđeno.
The incidence of microplastics in the food chain and its impact on human healthThe accumulation of microplastics (MP) in the environment and its contamination of food products has become a global threat to living organisms, environment and human health. Currently, the main concerns related to MP in the environment include its role as a source and final depot for toxic chemicals and pathogenic microorganisms in addition to bioaccumulation and potential entry into the food chain. Most of the plastics is used for the production of packaging materials, including those used in the food industry, and people most often store, transport, prepare and consume food in plastic containers. This paper provides an overview of the knowledge about the occurrence of MP in the human food chain and emphasizes its role as a vector of various contaminants and microorganisms. Furthermore, one of the objectives of the paper is to point out the possible effects of the release of MP from plastic packaging materials in food and beverages and the potential consequences for human health. The results presented suggest that the effect of MP on the food chain, and especially its impact on human health, need to be addressed much more intensively. A good tool to mitigate the potential negative impacts of MP in food would be risk analysis and the subsequent introduction of nutritional recommendations for highrisk food with its higher content and the use of alternative packaging materials in food and beverage packaging.
