This article explores a perennial theme in the literature of strategic studies: the relationship between military theory and the military profession. It begins with a conceptual analysis of this ...relationship. It then investigates what military theorists themselves have had to say about the utility of their craft. It concludes by assessing the actual influence of military theory on selected individuals and institutions. The individuals are George S. Patton, Jr., and Ulysses S. Grant. The institutions are the United States Army and the United States Air Force in the late twentieth century. The fundamental finding is suggested in the title: military theory can indeed be quite useful in the maturation of military commanders and in the development of martial institutions, but it is not always necessary and by no means perfect. It should thus be studied assiduously but used with caution.

Effective and efficient defense system includes modernly organized, equipped and properly designed logistics system that provides adequate logistic support. The development of this system is a ...prerequisite of survival, and involves also the adaptation to changes in the environment and improvement of its own position in the region. The essence of development are innovations, and the innovations in the area of the creation and development of personnel are the key to development. The personnel is the only aware resource of the defense and the exponent of the development. Creation and development of personnel, logistic in particular, must be harmonized with the concept of long-term development of the defense system, the development of higher education at the national level, necessities of practice, requirements of the time period, contemporary trends in education and educational techniques and technologies. The program of the logistics personnel’ education should be a harmonious combination of methodological trends in higher education, information technologies, and modern teaching subject-matter. The designing of the logistics personnel profile should take into account the requirements of a wide range of jobs, the requirements of the exponents of logistics personnel development, educational and scientific institutions, users of logistic services and products, and other important “stakeholders”. In the education of logistics officers, the personnel should be seen in terms of their life cycle, the flow of movement in space and time, and the service of the education and upbringing through which they are created. In the creation of logistics personnel, through the process of education and upbringing, certain skills are reached, attitudes formed, certain knowledge, skills and habits acquired, and all three components of the military profession strengthened: physical, intellectual, and moral ones. The practice requires certain paradigms related to the process of logistics personnel’s creation and development to be critically analyzed and gradually abandoned.

This paper has been written with the intention to emphasize that the military uniform - its emergence, development, changes, quality and symbols highlighted on it clearly point to social and cultural ...patterns and effects that the military organization underwent in its historical course. Furthermore, the paper shows that the military uniform should meet two key requirements: the suitability for execution of assigned tasks within defined missions, on the one hand, and raising the 'combat spirit' of the armed forces members, on the other hand. If the military uniform is understood as a language that speaks to us and which communicates something, then the meaning of symbols and labels on it, as well as the uniform as a symbol itself, can be analyzed. Therefore, the meaning of a uniform as a symbolic language is in the expression of the characteristics of the military as the social institution and the characteristics of the military profession.

This historical and comparative exploration, primarily of Western military culture, covers three themes: (1) the elements of military culture, (2) the sources of continuity and change in military ...culture, and (3) the relation between military culture and the larger society. The study of military culture reviewed here does not encompass every cultural contribution (or response) to the preparation for or conduct of war, but is limited rather to the study of those particular beliefs, values, rituals, and other symbolic productions that organize and sustain military organization.
After the manifestation of mass terrorism at the 9/11 attack against the United States of America and the following terrorist assaults in Morocco, Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Spain, the provision of ...security to the 2004 Olympic Games came to be discussed in a new light. In Greece, in particular, responding to such threats became a matter of national defense. Although there was no specific intelligence indicating a specific terrorist threat to the Athens Olympic Games of 2004, the countering of such an eventuality gained prominence. Since it was widely assumed that this required the decisive engagement of military power, the Hellenic Armed Forces (HAF) planned, in every detail, the application of military countermeasures against any potential terrorist threat from the air, the ground and the sea.
