This essay recounts the story of a pastoral interaction with a man who tried to rob a local church on a Sunday morning. The individual had recently been released from prison and found himself in a ...position where he could not find employment. Lacking basic supplies and frustrated by his inability to take care of his family, he almost fell back into familiar patterns of criminal activity. Turning to a variety of sources, this essay reflects on the ministry of listening, the human need for emotional connection with others, and the eschatological hope found in the Christian tradition. In providing room for the narratives of those we serve, pastoral theologians provide a gracious space wherein the Spirit moves upon the teller of the tale as well as the listener. Together, we are transformed as we follow the path of God’s plot that unfolds chapter by chapter.

In some places, and against prevailing trends, Christian belief and practice is not being chased out of the public square but rather, it is very active in stimulating new forms of civic and social ...engagement. Like two blades of scissors, an applied theology requiring both being grounded in biblical work as well as social policy, can create faith-based action that develop collaborative platforms that pass muster in today's secular culture. The theological grounding is incarnational; Incarnational suggests identification. The Identification Principle offers a new impetus to holistic and practical engagement by the church with our world. All too often, incarnational ministry is divorced from proclamation and prayer. The author, who is an Anglican minister, is responsible for a large and innovative Christian social project on the edge of city centre, which is developing new forms of community engagement in a way that does not lose the importance of spiritual formation. Word and work go hand in hand. This fresh take on incarnational life, church and society draws together recent academic research and cutting-edge ministry. It presents a renewed theology of Christian action for a new generation of evangelical leaders who have to intuitively hold together action with word and worship. The book offers both theology and praxis. Exploring the role of the atonement, the honour of God and His divine worth, the incarnation and the role of Christ. The author argues the effectiveness of proclamation, intercession, and the confronting of systemic and individual wrongs to create new types of communities that engage culture and re-focuses mission.
Data from the Coronavirus, Church & You Survey indicated that retired clergy were feeling less comfortable with the Church's responses to the Covid-19 pandemic and more disaffected from the ...institutional Church. The subsequent project, Through the eyes of retired clergy, listened in greater depth to how retired clergy felt about the ways in which the Church had responded to the pandemic and to how they saw the future for the Church. In terms of the Church's response to the pandemic, retired clergy were not only realistic and affirming, but also engaged and critical. In terms of the future for the church, retired clergy were realistic and pessimistic. The general view was that the pandemic had accelerated the effect of trends evident before the pandemic. Some would argue that, while the pandemic could have reinforced the visibility of the Church in the local community, such opportunities were largely missed.
