Die zunehmende Bedeutung digitaler Plattformen für die moderne Gesellschaft wird bisher noch nicht hinreichend von einem übergreifenden Interesse an einer allgemeinen Theorie begleitet. Der Beitrag ...steuert aus systemtheoretischer Perspektive erste Vorarbeiten zu einem solchen Vorhaben bei. In Abgrenzung zu bestehenden Konzeptualisierungen digitaler Plattformen als Techniken, Märkte, Netzwerke oder Organisationen bestimmt er diese als soziale Systeme sui generis. Insbesondere das Festhalten am Organisationsbegriff eröffnet dabei aussichtsreiche Vergleichspunkte für Funktionsbestimmungen digitaler Plattformen. Anders als Organisationen konstituieren sich diese nicht durch die Konditionierung von Mitgliedschafts-, sondern von Sichtbarkeitserwartungen. Digitale Plattformen leisten analog zu Organisationen eine Maximierung der Generalisierung von Verhaltenserwartungen in allen drei Sinndimensionen zugleich. Anders als Organisationen leisten sie diese Maximierung aber zeitlich über Kognitionen, sachlich über Programme und sozial über materiell-technisierte Spuren.

Das Verhältnis von Politik und Recht ist in der europäischen Tradition durch eine besondere Nähe gekennzeichnet, die die Frage provoziert, ob es sich überhaupt um zwei voneinander getrennte Systeme ...handelt oder ob nicht beide Funktionsbereiche konvergieren, es also gerade zu einer Entdifferenzierung kommt. Die Theorie selbstreferentieller Systeme und eine darauf aufbauende Theorie der funktionalen Differenzierung der Gesellschaft bieten genauere Analysemöglichkeiten, die zeigen, dass Politik und Recht in einem spezifischen Kombinationsverhältnis von Abhängigkeit und Unabhängigkeit stehen. Die zugrunde gelegte Theorie der modernen Gesellschaft betont zugleich das Unwahrscheinliche des europäischen Modells und erlaubt somit auch die Frage, ob diese Gesellschaft nicht an ihren eigenen Strukturen scheitern kann. Zumindest gibt es empirische Entwicklungen, die als Hinweise auf eine problematische Änderung des Verhältnisses von Politik und Recht verstanden werden können.
Does ethnic diversity erode social trust? Continued immigration and corresponding growing ethnic diversity have prompted this essential question for modern societies, but few clear answers have been ...reached in the sprawling literature. This article reviews the literature on the relationship between ethnic diversity and social trust through a narrative review and a meta-analysis of 1,001 estimates from 87 studies. The review clarifies the core concepts, highlights pertinent debates, and tests core claims from the literature on the relationship between ethnic diversity and social trust. Several results stand out from the meta-analysis. We find a statistically significant negative relationship between ethnic diversity and social trust across all studies. The relationship is stronger for trust in neighbors and when ethnic diversity is measured more locally. Covariate conditioning generally changes the relationship only slightly. The review concludes by discussing avenues for future research.

Ce sont des luttes liées au ...travail qui s’intègrent dans les rapports sociaux conflictuels et qui régissent les sociétés d’aujourd’hui. De ce point de vue, le travail est toujours au coeur des conflits dans les sociétés modernes. Définie comme la cessation collective et concertée du travail en vue d’appuyer des revendications professionnelles, la grève reste en effet assez fortement associée, dans sesreprésentations courantes, à un arrêt de travail, plus ou moins long. Rapportées au Gabon, dans les administrations publiques et dans les entreprises privées, les expressions de grève présentent une certaine évolution dans leurs manifestations. Certaines pratiques de grève s’inspirent des symboles liés aux rituels funéraires, ce qui dénote le caractère vindicatif de ces manifestations.

Trust is key to understanding the dynamics of social relations, to the extent that it is often viewed as the glue that holds society together. We review the mounting sociological literature to help ...answer what trust is and where it comes from. To this end, we identify two research streams-on particularized trust and generalized trust, respectively-and propose an integrative framework that bridges these lines of research while also enhancing conceptual precision. This framework provides the springboard for identifying several important avenues for future research, including new investigations into the radius of trust, the intermediate form of categorical trust, and the interrelationships between different forms of trust. This article also calls for more scholarship focusing on the consequences (versus antecedents) of trust, addressing more fully the trustee side of the relation, and employing new empirical methods. Such novel approaches will ensure that trust research will continue to provide important insights into the functioning of modern society in the years to come.
Modern societies are increasingly faced with “unknown unknowns,” Black Swans, and mega-crises. Both public and corporate leaders find it deeply challenging to respond to these crisis events. Existing ...approaches and tools to cope with crisis-induced uncertainty are of little help in these dynamic environments. This article explores how the principles of Pragmatism may provide the building blocks for a theory of effective strategic crisis management. We argue that these principles, formulated by a group of American philosophers in a time of deep uncertainty, provide a way of thinking that will help practitioners prepare for, and deal with, emerging risks, crises, and disasters.
