Between 1730 and 1750, Domingos Alvares traversed the colonial Atlantic world like few Africans of his time--from Africa to South America to Europe. By tracing the steps of this powerful African ...healer and vodun priest, James Sweet finds dramatic means for unfolding a history of the eighteenth-century Atlantic world in which healing, religion, kinship, and political subversion were intimately connected.Alvares treated many people across the Atlantic, yet healing was rarely a simple matter of remedying illness and disease. Through the language of health and healing, Alvares also addressed the profound alienation of warfare, capitalism, and the African slave trade. As a result, he and other African healers frequently ran afoul of imperial power brokers. Nevertheless, even the powerful suffered isolation in the Atlantic world and often turned to African healers for answers. In this way, healers simultaneously became fierce critics of Atlantic imperialism and expert translators of it, adapting their therapeutic strategies in order to secure social relevance and even power. By tracing Alvares' frequent uprooting and border crossing, Sweet illuminates how African healing practices evolved in the diaspora, contesting the social and political hierarchies of imperialism while also making profound impacts on the intellectual discourse of the "modern" Atlantic world.
Dans l’Europe moderne, les relations d’enfermement dans le commerce entre les sexes et le thème des rapports hommes/femmes dans les espaces publics et privés ont déjà suscité de nombreuses études. ...C’est pourquoi le présent ouvrage se propose de renouveler les perspectives en interrogeant à nouveau la notion d’enfermement mais en reliant ce phénomène tout particulièrement aux paradoxes qu’il induit. La femme occupe une place sociale fortement déterminée entre autres par la morale chrétienne, mais également par une société marquée par la prédominance masculine dans son fonctionnement. Elle se trouve alors le plus souvent confinée aux espaces clos (la demeure familiale, le couvent…), cette clôture pouvant être marquée par de grandes différences selon les aires géographiques et les périodes étudiées (XVIe-XVIIIe siècles). La recluse puise dans son esprit des formes d’échappatoires allant de la simple ruse à la plus grande folie. Les études contenues dans ce volume portent une attention particulière aux modalités métaphoriques ou symboliques de l’enfermement, ainsi que sur les moyens employés par les femmes pour s’y soustraire.
Frappée du sceau de l’universel, l’expérience mystique ne cesse de soulever des interrogations à la fois sur ses fondements (ses assises théoriques, spirituelles et culturelles) et sur les ...différentes voies qui lui permettent de s’inscrire dans l’ordre des choses comme un phénomène social inéluctable soutenu par des penseurs, des artistes, des femmes et des hommes de Lettres exceptionnels. Dans notre article, nous nous intéressons à deux grandes figures du mysticisme : Ibn Arabi (560/1165 - 638/1240) et Jean de la Croix (1542/1591). A la lumière d’une étude stylistique à visée comparative de deux de leurs compositions poétiques, que nous situons dans une plus large perspective (historico-sociale), nous montrons comment le même désir (concept sur lequel un détour lacanien s’impose) de Dieu s’exprime, Chez Ibn Arabi, par le moyen d’une écriture de l’entre-deux qui se singularise par un enchevêtrement structuré des dimensions philosophique et littéraire.
Cet article propose une revue de littérature concernant les psychédéliques dits classiques (LSD, psilocybine, DMT et mescaline) et, plus précisément, leur utilisation en psychothérapie dans le champ ...de la dépression, du point de vue des processus de symbolisation.
Après quelques éléments introductifs portant sur la dépression, nous décrivons les principales caractéristiques des psychothérapies assistées par psychédélique et les résultats des essais cliniques modernes. Nous en présentons ensuite la phénoménologie et en proposons un éclairage théorique au croisement des neurosciences et de la psychanalyse, avant de conclure sur les perspectives ouvertes par cette thérapie.
Les résultats déjà obtenus suggèrent qu’une seule dose, prise dans un environnement étayant, peut être suffisante pour produire des effets thérapeutiques significatifs et objectivables dès la prise de psychédéliques et au moins six mois après celle-ci. La réponse clinique dépend de l’intensité phénoménologique initiale de l’expérience et de la capacité du sujet à laisser advenir des reviviscences traumatiques. Elle dépend également de la présence et de l’intensité de vécus de nature mystique caractérisés par un sentiment de dissolution du moi et d’unité avec le monde.
La thérapie assistée par psychédéliques semble favoriser l’émergence des processus primaires et la levée des mécanismes de défense. Les psychédéliques catalyseraient ainsi la relance des processus de symbolisation, favorisant notamment l’intégration de certains conflits psychiques ainsi que le remaniement de relations d’objets pathogènes. Sur le plan neurobiologique, ces processus seraient sous-tendus par une diminution de l’activité du réseau du mode par défaut – parfois considéré comme lié à certaines fonctions du Moi – associée à une dimension entropique du fonctionnement cérébral. Ces différents éléments participeront d’une diminution de la symptomatologie dépressive, en particulier des ruminations. Ces effets thérapeutiques nécessitent néanmoins un cadre clinique particulièrement contenant et un positionnement clinique plus engagé qu’à l’accoutumée afin d’accompagner dans les meilleures conditions ces potentiels effets de transformation psychique.
Les études déjà menées sur cette thématique soulignent le caractère très prometteur des psychédéliques dans la prise en charge de la dépression et de ses formes résistantes. Ces substances semblent opérer comme un catalyseur des processus de symbolisation qui nécessite néanmoins, pour se déployer pleinement, un accompagnement psychothérapique plus global à la croisée de la psychiatrie, la psychologie clinique, des neurosciences et de la psychanalyse.
This article proposes a literature review focused on the so-called “classic” psychedelics (LSD, psilocybin, DMT, and mescaline) and, more specifically, on their use in the psychotherapy of major depressive disorders and the way they affect symbolization processes.
After some introductory remarks on psychedelics and depressive disorders, we describe some modern clinical trials, and then explore the peculiar phenomenology occurring in the psychedelic experience, as well as its therapeutic effects on depressive symptoms. The underlying mechanisms are discussed from a perspective at the crossroads of cognitive neurosciences and psychoanalysis. We conclude with some reflections on the crucial role of the setting.
The results already obtained suggest that a single dose, taken in a supportive environment, may be sufficient to produce significant and immediate therapeutic effects, which are still present six months after the dose, although less so for some patients. Clinical response depends on the subjective aspects of the individual experience. More specifically, it seems correlated with the ability to “let go” and to allow autobiographical memories to emerge, along with the intense emotions they carry. It also relies on the presence and intensity of mystical-type experiences, characterized by feelings of “ego dissolution,” unity with everything, transcendence of space and time, and ineffability.
Psychedelic-assisted therapy seems to promote the emergence of primary processes and the lifting of defense mechanisms. Psychedelics would thus catalyze the resumption of symbolization processes, favoring in particular the integration of unconscious conflicts as well as the remodeling of pathogenic object relationships. On the neurobiological level, these processes would be underpinned by a decrease in the activity of the default mode network – sometimes considered the primary biologic substrate of the Freudian ego –, associated with an increase in brain entropy and in neuroplasticity. These different elements entail a decrease in depressive symptomatology, particularly ruminations. Common factors identified as the cause of positive changes in classical psychotherapies appear naturally amplified in the psychedelic experience, which requires the containing function of a therapist and a supportive clinical setting to allow a resumption of symbolic processes. To ensure the perpetuation of the observed transformations, which often exceed the simple withdrawal of symptoms, an extended psychotherapeutic monitoring would be appropriate.
The psychedelic substance acts as a catalyst, allowing an access to otherwise inaccessible unconscious materials, which can then be processed both spontaneously and within the therapeutic relationship. Considering the data discussed in this review, we emphasize the need for further research exploring the potential of this treatment, which also offers the hope of a renewed dialogue between psychiatry and psychology, neurosciences and psychoanalysis.
Judith Halberstam's Female Masculinity (1998) may be considered a starting theoretical landmark for masculinity studies in this context, as her book highlighted new perspectives on masculine patterns ...of behavior and identity, indicating new paths in the development of what would be queer scholarship. Bederman's Manliness and Civilization (1995) is an account of the emergence and development of a very influential identity narrative that the majority of Americans took for granted in the period from the end of the Civil War to World War I. This narrative claimed that identities, including sex and gender identities, are historically constructed and liable to change under specific circumstances. Set to illustrate the social Darwinism of the survival of the fittest, this ideal man was bound to control the world, foreshadowing the rise in Europe of the post-Nietzschean, Nazi Übermensch. According to Kimmel, the construction of the masculinity identity stereotype of the "self-made man" - a phrase so much entrenched in hegemonic masculinist ideology that an alternative "self-made person" has never been used, at least to my knowledge - took place in the historical space of time from the Revolutionary War to the end of the Civil War.

This reflection on the influence of Napoleon and the consequences of the wars on the major British poets of the Romantic era is meant to illustrate how the reactions of both nobility and commoners ...are recorded in literature and media. The dual perception of Napoleon as both hero and tyrant and the atrocious suffering of those at home and bloody battles are manifest in the works of the major poets, William Wordsworth, Samuel Taylor Coleridge, Percy Bysshe Shelly, and especially George Gordon, Lord Byron. Even today, Napoleon transcends precise definition and he has inspired some of the greatest poets in British literature
In this paper I explore what it means to encounter the symbol as a meaningful object, or process, within the environment of the other‐than‐human. Using Jung’s account in ‘The spirit mercurius’ of an ...enlisted Indigenous soldier who attempts to desert his barracks on hearing a native Oji tree calling him, I compare the evolving stages of consciousness theorised by Jung to explain this phenomenon with the progression discussed by him in his commentary on Dorn’s coniunctio. My aim is to clarify Jung’s understanding of the symbolically constellated and ‘undifferentiated’ worldview of what Jung calls the ‘primitive’. I also draw on the work of Spitzform, Searles, Roszak, Fisher, Chalquist, Prentice and Rust in relation to the emerging field of ecopsychology, where consideration of a fundamental link between psychological and material existence – between psyche and ecos – has been proposed as an essential component of psychological theory, and in which our alienation from our natural surroundings has been identified as pathological. I include observations from my own experience of working therapeutically with clients in outdoor settings and I ask how a more ecosystemically integrated sense of self might be sought for a psyche that encounters symbolic material within its containing environment.
Dans cet article j’explore ce que cela veut dire de rencontrer le symbole comme un objet ou un processus plein de sens, et ceci dans l’environnement non‐humain. Utilisant le récit de Jung dans « L’Esprit Mercure » sur un soldat autochtone qui tente de déserter la caserne ayant entendu un arbre Oji l’appeler, je compare les états de conscience en évolution théorisés par Jung pour expliquer ce phénomène avec la progression dont il traite dans son commentaire sur le coniunctio de Dorn. Mon but est de clarifier la perspective de Jung concernant la vision du monde « indifférenciée » et constellée symboliquement et qu’il qualifie de ‘primitive’. Je m’appuie également sur les travaux de Spitzform, Searles, Prentice, Roszak, Seed et Rust en ce qui concerne le champ émergent de l’éco‐psychologie, dans lequel la prise en compte d’un lien fondamental entre l’existence psychologique et l’existence matérielle – entre psyché et ecos ‐ a été proposée comme élément essentiel de la théorie psychologique. Dans ce champ notre aliénation par rapport à notre environnement naturel est considéré comme pathologique. J’inclus des observations venant de ma propre expérience du travail thérapeutique avec des clients dans des cadres en plein air. Je demande comment un sentiment du soi plus intégré éco‐systémiquement pourrait être recherché pour une psyché qui rencontre du matériel symbolique dans l’environnement qui la contient.
In diesem Aufsatz untersuche ich, was es bedeutet, dem Symbol als bedeutungsvolles Objekt oder Prozeß in der Umgebung des Anders‐als‐Menschlichen zu begegnen. Unter Verwendung von Jungs Bericht in 'The Spirit Mercurius' (deutsch 'Der Geist Mercurius' in GW 13, p. 211ff) über einen angeworbenen indigenen Soldaten der versucht, seine Kaserne zu verlassen, nachdem er von einem einheimischen Oji‐Baum gerufen wurde, vergleiche ich die von Jung konzeptualisierten Entwicklungsstadien des Bewußtseins, um dieses Phänomen zu erklären, mit dem von ihm diskutierten Fortschritt in seinem Kommentar zu Dorns coniunctio. Mein Ziel ist es, Jungs Verständnis von der symbolisch konstellierten und 'undifferenzierten' Weltsicht dessen, was Jung das 'Primitive' nennt, zu verdeutlichen. Ich beziehe mich auch auf die Arbeit von Spitzform, Searles, Prentice, Roszak, Seed und Rust in Bezug auf das aufstrebende Gebiet der Ökopsychologie, wo die Berücksichtigung einer grundlegenden Verbindung zwischen psychologischer und materieller Existenz – zwischen Psyche und Ökos – als wesentlicher Bestandteil der psychologischen Theorie vorgeschlagen und in der unsere Entfremdung von unserer natürlichen Umgebung als pathologisch identifiziert wurde. Ich füge Beobachtungen aus meiner eigenen Erfahrung bei der therapeutischen Arbeit mit Klienten im Freien hinzu und frage, wie ein stärker ökosystemisch integriertes Selbstgefühl für eine Psyche angestrebt werden könnte, die symbolischem Material in ihrer umgebenden Umgebung begegnet.
In questo articolo esploro cosa significa incontrare il simbolo come un oggetto significativo, o un processo, all’interno dell’ambiente del non umano. Usando il racconto che Jung fa in “Lo Spirito Mercurio” di un soldato indigeno arruolato che tenta di disertare la sua caserma sentendosi chiamato da un albero Oji, confronto gli stadi evolutivi della coscienza teorizzati da Jung per spiegare questo fenomeno con la progressione discussa da lui nel suo commento alla coniunctio di Dorn. Il mio scopo è chiarire la visione di Jung del mondo, simbolicamente costellata e “indifferenziata”, in particolare di ciò che egli chiama il “primitivo”. Attingo anche al lavoro di Spitzform, Searles, Prentice, Roszak, Seed e Rust in relazione al campo emergente dell’ecopsicologia, in cui la considerazione di un legame fondamentale tra esistenza psicologica e materiale ‐ tra psiche ed ecos ‐ è stata proposta come una componente essenziale della teoria psicologica ed in cui la nostra alienazione dall’ambiente naturale è stata identificata come patologica. Includo osservazioni dalla mia esperienza di lavoro terapeutico con i clienti in ambienti esterni e mi chiedo come si possa ricercare un senso di sé più integrato dal punto di vista eco‐sistemico per una psiche che incontra materiale simbolico all’interno del suo ambiente contenitivo.
В статье я исследую роль встречи с символом как значимым объектом или процессом в среде за пределами социальной. Основываясь на приведенном в работе Юнга «Дух Меркурий» рассказе о солдате‐туземце, услышавшем, как его зовет по имени дерево Оджи и пытавшемся сбежать из казармы, для объяснения этого явления я сравниваю стадии развития сознания, выделенные Юнгом, со стадиями, о которых он говорил в комментарии о "coniunctio" у Дорна. Моя цель – прояснить понимание Юнгом символически констеллированной и "недифференцированной" картины мира, которую он называет "примитивной". Я также опираюсь на работы Шпицформа, Серлза, Прентиса, Роззака, Сида и Руста, которые относятся к зарождающейся области экопсихологии и в которых предлагается учитывать в качестве существенного компонента психологической теории основополагающую связь между бытием психологическим и материальным – между психикой и экосом, а наше отчуждение от окружающей природы называется в них патологическим. Я привожу наблюдения из собственной практики терапевтической работы с клиентами на природе и задаюсь вопросом о том, как помочь психике найти более экологически‐системно интегрированный смысл при встрече с символическим материалом в окружающей ее среде.
En el presente trabajo, exploro lo que significa encontrar un símbolo como objeto significativo, o proceso, en un contexto otro‐que‐humano. Utilizando la consideración de Jung acerca del “espíritu mercurius” de un soldado indígena reclutado quien intenta desertar su barraca al escuchar el llamado de un árbol nativo Oji, comparo las etapas propuestas por Jung sobre el desarrollo de la consciencia para explicar este fenómeno con la evolución descripta en su comentario sobre la coniunctio de Dorn. Mi objetivo es aclarar la comprensión de Jung sobre la constelación simbólica y la cosmovisión ‘indiferenciada’ del, llamado por Jung, ‘primitivo’. También me apoyo en los trabajos de Spitzform, Searles, Prentice, Rozak, Seed y Rust con relación al campo emergente de la eco‐psicología, donde la consideración acerca de la conexión fundamental entre la existencia material y psicológica – entre psique y ecos – se ha propuesto como un componente esencial de la teoría psicológica y en los cuales la alienación de nuestro contexto natural se ha identificado como patológica. Incluyo observaciones de mi propia experiencia de trabajar terapéuticamente con clientes en contextos al aire libre, y pregunto si una psique que encuentra material simbólico en su medio ambiente puede ir a la búsqueda de un sentido del self más integrado eco‐sistémicamente.

This paper focuses on the central story "Breaking Out" of It Ain ́t Me Babe(1970) comix, the first-known American all-women comics anthology. It is a parody of mainstream female comic book characters ...waking up to the Women’s Liberation Movement. “Breaking Out” deals with the collective process of self-consciousness and describes the awakening of self-awareness of women. Betty Freidan in her book The Feminine Mystique (2009) defines that process as an artificial idea of femininity. Both, story and comix are one of the counterculture icons of the second American feminist wave that reflect the most important alternative schools of thought currents in America of the 70s as the Freudian Left, Feminism of Difference and the introduction of the female language or parler-femme. “Breaking Out” and It Ain ́t Me Babe provide a new view of sex and sexuality and break out of the prevailing sexism in comixproduced by their male counterparts. Our approach involves the analysis of this story from the perspective of gender difference, following the proposal of Luce Irigaray, taking as a starting point overall, the category of the Other exposed in the existentialist essay The Second Sex by Simone De Beauvoir. Both perspectives provide an appropriate framework to combine sociological and historical approaches to theories of early feminism. We conclude that this comix is a collective claim act that marks the beginning of a new era in the American comix market in the early 1970s.
