While mothers, mothering and motherhood surround us daily, the distinction between the institution of motherhood and mothering (Adrienne Rich), feminist understandings of the motherhood mystique ...(Judith Warner) and maternal experiences of motherload (Andrea O'Reilly) continue to be misunderstood and unsatisfactorily addressed. Drawing upon the work of various second wave feminists and contemporary maternal theorists, I propose it is time to again shift attention to the significant work involved in raising children and to the role and responsibilities all community members, regardless of gender, have in parenting. Using a matricentric feminist lens, it is suggest how we may move away from the impossibility of patriarchal institutionalised motherhood towards an articulated mothering practice that collectively conceives of parents, parenting and parenthood beyond assumptions and expectations of what constitutes 'good mothering'.
This paper considers the transfer of somatic effects from patient to analyst, which gives rise to embodied countertransference, functioning as an organ of primitive communication. By means of ...processes of projective identification, the analyst experiences somatic disturbances within himself or herself that are connected to the split‐off complexes of the analysand. The analysty’s own attempt at mind‐body integration ushers the patient towards a progressive understanding and acceptance of his or her inner suffering.
Such experiences of psychic contagion between patient and analyst are related to Jung’s ‘psychology of the transference’ and the idea of the ‘subtle body’ as an unconscious shared area. The re‐attribution of meaning to pre‐verbal psychic experiences within the ‘embodied reverie’ of the analyst enables the analytic dyad to reach the archetypal energies and structuring power of the collective unconscious. A detailed case example is presented of how the emergence of the vitalizing connection between the psyche and the soma, severed through traumatic early relations with parents or carers, allows the instinctual impulse of the Self to manifest, thereby reactivating the process of individuation.

Dad built a bomb shelter in the backyard, Mom stocked the
survival kit in the basement, and the kids practiced ducking under
their desks at school. This was family life in the new era of the
A-bomb. ...This was civil defense. In this provocative work of social
and political history, Laura McEnaney takes us into the secretive
world of defense planners and the homes of ordinary citizens to
explore how postwar civil defense turned the front lawn into the
front line. The reliance on atomic weaponry as a centerpiece of
U.S. foreign policy cast a mushroom cloud over everyday life.
American citizens now had to imagine a new kind of war, one in
which they were both combatants and targets. It was the Federal
Civil Defense Administration's job to encourage citizens to adapt
to their nuclear present and future. As McEnaney demonstrates, the
creation of a civil defense program produced new dilemmas about the
degree to which civilian society should be militarized to defend
itself against internal and external threats. Conflicts arose about
the relative responsibilities of state and citizen to fund and
implement a home-front security program. The defense
establishment's resolution was to popularize and privatize military
preparedness. The doctrine of "self-help" defense demanded that
citizens become autonomous rather than rely on the federal
government for protection. Families would reconstitute themselves
as paramilitary units that could quash subversion from within and
absorb attack from without. Because it solicited an unprecedented
degree of popular involvement, the FCDA offers a unique opportunity
to explore how average citizens, community leaders, and elected
officials both participated in and resisted the creation of the
national security state. Drawing on a wide variety of archival
sources, McEnaney uncovers the broad range of responses to this
militarization of daily life and reveals how government planners
and ordinary people negotiated their way at the dawn of the atomic
age. Her work sheds new light on the important postwar debate about
what total military preparedness would actually mean for American
society.
A comprehensive treatment of visionary experience in some of the main texts of Jewish mysticism, this book reveals the overwhelmingly visual nature of religious experience in Jewish spirituality from ...antiquity through the late Middle Ages. Using phenomenological and critical historical tools, Wolfson examines Jewish mystical texts from late antiquity, pre-kabbalistic sources from the tenth to the twelfth centuries, and twelfth- and thirteenth-century kabbalistic literature. His work demonstrates that the sense of sight assumes an epistemic priority in these writings, reflecting and building upon those scriptural passages that affirm the visual nature of revelatory experience. Moreover, the author reveals an androcentric eroticism in the scopic mentality of Jewish mystics, which placed the externalized and representable form, the phallus, at the center of the visual encounter. In the visionary experience, as Wolfson describes it, imagination serves a primary function, transmuting sensory data and rational concepts into symbols of those things beyond sense and reason. In this view, the experience of a vision is inseparable from the process of interpretation. Fundamentally challenging the conventional distinction between experience and exegesis, revelation and interpretation, Wolfson argues that for the mystics themselves, the study of texts occasioned a visual experience of the divine located in the imagination of the mystical interpreter. Thus he shows how Jewish mystics preserved the invisible transcendence of God without doing away with the visual dimension of belief.
How did Jewish mysticism go from arcane knowledge to popular spirituality? Kabbalah in Print examines the cultural impact of printing on the popularization, circulation, and transmission of Kabbalah ...in the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries. The Zohar, in particular, generated a large secondary literature of study guides and reference works that aimed to ease the linguistic and conceptual challenges of the text. The arrival of printed classics of Kabbalah was soon followed by the appearance of new literary genres—anthologies, digests, lexicons, and other learning aids—that mediated mystical primary sources to a community of readers not versed in this lore. A detailed investigation of the four works by R. Yissakhar Baer (ca.1580–ca.1629) of Prague sheds light on the literary strategies, pedagogic concerns, and religious motivations of secondary elites, a new cadre of authors empowered by the opportunities that printing opened up. Andrea Gondos highlights shifting intellectual and cultural boundaries in the early modern period, when the transmission of Kabbalah became a meeting point connecting various strata of Jewish society as well as Jewish and Christian intellectuals.
This series of papers on early anticipations of a spiritual New Age ends with Carl Jung's version of a futural planetary-wide unus mundus rejoining person and cosmos, based on his psychoid linkage of ...quantum physics and consciousness, and especially on the neo-shamanic worldview emerging out of his spirit guided initiation in the more recently published Red Book. A cognitive-psychological re-evaluation of Jung's archetypal imagination, the metaphoricity of his alchemical writings, and a comparison of Jung and Levi-Strauss on mythological thinking all support a contemporary view of Jung's active imagination and mythic amplification as a spiritual intelligence based on a formal operations in affect, as also reflected in his use of the multi-perspectival synchronicities of the l-Ching. A reconsideration of Bourguignon on the larger relations between trance and social structure further supports the neo-shamanic nature of Jung's Aquarian Age expectations.
