The Islamic finance industry faces the challenging task of attempting to reconcile the risk management demands of business entities with the difficulties posed by the seemingly rigid stance taken by ...some Shari'ah scholars over hedging practices. Offering a fresh perspective, Sherif Ayoub confronts the challenge by reformulating how we might think about the theorisation of economic matters in the Islamic faith. Readers will come to understand the issues surrounding the avoidance of Riba (usury), Gharar (excessive uncertainty) and Maysir (gambling).
Financial risk management is a topic of primary importance in financial markets. It is important to learn how to measure and control risk, how to be primed for the opportunity of compensative return, ...and how to avoid useless exposure.
Nanotechnology has seen exponential growth in last decade due to its unique physicochemical properties; however, the risk associated with this emerging technology has withdrawn ample attention in the ...past decade. Nanotoxicity is majorly contributed to the small size and large surface area of nanomaterials, which allow easy dispersion and invasion of anatomical barriers in human body. Unique physio-chemical properties of nanoparticles make the investigation of their toxic consequences intricate and challenging. This makes it important to have an in-depth knowledge of different mechanisms involved in nanomaterials's action and toxicity. Nano-toxicity has various effects on human health and diseases as they can easily enter into the humans via different routes, mainly respiratory, dermal, and gastrointestinal routes. This also limits the use of nanomaterials as therapeutic and diagnostic tools. This review focuses on the nanomaterial-cell interactions leading to toxicological responses. Different mechanisms involved in nanoparticle-mediated toxicity with the main focus on oxidative stress, genotoxic, and carcinogenic potential has also been discussed. Different methods and techniques used for the characterization of nanomaterials in food and other biological matrices have also been discussed in detail. Nano-toxicity on different organs-with the major focus on the cardiac and respiratory system-have been discussed. Conclusively, the risk management of nanotoxicity is also summarized. This review provides a better understanding of the current scenario of the nanotoxicology, disease progression due to nanomaterials, and their use in the food industry and medical therapeutics. Briefly, the required rules, regulations, and the need of policy makers has been discussed critically.
Real-world safety case studies provide concrete examples of episodes that can be both instructive and memorable for students. We describe here a framework for teaching safety case studies using the ...RAMP risk management approach. Structured templates guide students to Recognize the hazards present, Assess the associated risks, and consider what risk Minimization and Preparation for emergencies steps were appropriate. The student is then guided to consider what RAMP steps were, or might have been, inadequately addressed. The process culminates with a root cause analysis that examines probable causes of the incident. This guided inquiry framework allows students to gain an understanding of risk management and reinforces the importance of the decision-making process for safety. The Supporting Information for this paper includes the templates, student instruction for the four parts of the process, an instructor’s guide, three examples of the process, and other resource material.
Risk management plays a vital role in effectively operating supply chains in the presence of a variety of uncertainties. Over the years, many researchers have focused on supply chain risk management ...(SCRM) by contributing in the areas of defining, operationalising and mitigating risks. In this paper, we review and synthesise the extant literature in SCRM in the past decade in a comprehensive manner. The purpose of this paper is threefold. First, we present and categorise SCRM research appearing between 2003 and 2013. Second, we undertake a detailed review associated with research developments in supply chain risk definitions, risk types, risk factors and risk management/mitigation strategies. Third, we analyse the SCRM literature in exploring potential gaps.
The article is aimed at researching problems related to enterprise risk management in modern conditions. The purpose of the article is to consider the features of risk management at the enterprise in ...conditions of uncertainty, in order to increase its adaptability and flexibility, as well as to determine the main principles and management methods that allow a quick response to existing and potential threats and minimize the negative impact of risks on the enterprise's activities. The following research methods were used in the research process: theoretical generalization - to form definitions of concepts, general approaches and principles; analysis and synthesis; modeling - to form a model of the risk management process. To realize the set goal, the concepts’ definitions of "risk" and "risk management" were considered. The key conditions under which the risk assessment process will be most effective were formulated. The principles, compliance with which will contribute to enterprise’s successful risk management, were outlined. It was established that risk management requires careful development of strategy and tactics, which must be constantly coordinated with other system parameters and economic criteria of the enterprise's efficiency. The scientific novelty of the conducted research consists of solving tasks that have theoretical and practical significance in enterprise risk management field in modern conditions. The following tasks were solved to achieve the set goal: - Aspects of risk concept in the economic sphere are considered, including risk as a danger or threat, risk as an opportunity and risk as uncertainty. - The purpose of enterprise’s risk management is determined and it is aimed at preventing problems or negative consequences through effective crisis management and avoiding additional costs. - The risk management policy was established and it includes various methods and techniques aimed at reducing the risk of making wrong decisions and minimizing negative consequences. - The process of risk management was considered and it was established that it is cyclical and includes a sequence of well-defined stages, which help entrepreneurs identify business risks: risk identification, risk analysis, risk assessment, formulation of an action plan, mitigating the impact of risk, monitoring and controlling risks. - Risk management methods were investigated, including: risk avoidance (deviation from risk or prevention of its occurrence); risk neutralization through its transfer (includes insurance, hedging and financial guarantees), reduction (includes diversification, limitation, optimization and localization) or preservation (includes the creation of a reserve fund, self-insurance and the creation of insurance reserves for stocks of raw materials and cash).

A leading expert on risk management describes how to steer your company through a risk hurricane-the extreme risk exposure that can lead to major disruption for your business. Risk management has ...become a standard part of the strategic tool kit, providing senior leaders with a forward-looking radar to scan the future and give early warnings of approaching threats and opportunities. However, even best-in-class organizations can falter in the face of extreme risk exposure. Special circumstances demand special responses, and extreme risk exposure needs very careful handling. Routine risk management approaches will fall short, but businesses that demonstrate a high degree of flexibility and resilience will have the competitive advantage and the ability to thrive where others fail. The causes and consequences of meteorological hurricanes have parallels in the way uncontrolled risk exposure can develop in organizations. Both are caused largely by predictable factors, but both are characterized by sustained uncertainty and severe impact once they develop. If we can learn to predict a risk hurricane, prepare for it effectively, and survive its effects, then our organizations will be well placed to address the challenge of extreme risk exposure, if and when we are unfortunate enough to face it.
