In this study, fruit properties of 19 rose hip (Rosa spp.) genotypes selected from a large number of genotypes in the natural rose hip population in Akkuş district (Ordu province) in 2014-2015 were ...determined. The genotypes belonged to Rosa dumalis Bechst., Rosa gallica L. and Rosa canina species. They had a range of 1.22-3.47 g in fruit weight, 10.2-16.9 mm in fruit width, 13.2-25.2 mm in fruit length, 1.25-2.09 in fruit shape index, 62-72% in fruit flesh ratio, 16-35 in seed number, 13.6-24.4% in total soluble solids, 560-1025 mg 100g-1 in C vitamin content, and 1.06-2.48 Brix° in titratable acidity. The five genotypes were less thorny plants. The two genotypes (AK-75 and AK-20) were evaluated as promising in terms of fruit weight and fruit flesh ratio. In addition, AK-63 for TSS content and AK-16 for vitamin C content were found remarkable. Findings revealed that some genotypes could be valuable as genetic material for future breeding efforts.
2014-2015 yıllarında yürütülen bu araştırmada, Ordu ili Akkuş yöresi doğal kuşburnu popülasyonunda çok sayıda genotip arasından seçilen 19 kuşburnu (Rosa spp.) genotipinin meyve özellikleri belirlenmiştir. Rosa dumalis Bechst., Rosa gallica L. ve Rosa canina türlerine ait olan genotiplerde meyve ağırlığı 1.22-3.47 g, meyve genişliği 10.2-16.9 mm, meyve uzunluğu 13.2-25.2 mm, meyve şekil endeksi 1.25-2.09, meyve eti oranı %62-72, tohum sayısı 16-35, suda çözünebilir kuru madde miktarı 13.6-24.4 °briks, C vitamini içeriği 560-1025 mg 100g-1 ve titre edilebilir asitlik %1.06-2.48 aralığında değişim göstermiştir. Beş genotip az dikenli bulunurken, iki genotip (AK-75 ve AK-20) meyve ağırlığı ve meyve eti oranı açısından ümitvar olarak değerlendirilmiştir. Bunun yanında, suda çözünebilir kuru madde miktarı bakımından AK-63 ve C vitamini içeriği bakımından AK-16 dikkat çekici bulunmuştur. Bulgular, bazı genotiplerin gelecekteki ıslah çabaları için genetik materyal olarak değerli olabileceğini ortaya çıkarmıştır.
Five different rose hip (Rosa L.) species including Rosa canina, Rosa dumalis, Rosa gallica, Rosa dumalis subsp.boissieri and Rosa hirtissima grown in Turkey are studied. Phenolic compounds, organic ...acids, sugar and volatile compounds of five different species of rose hips are studied. Total phenolic contents of the rose hip fruits were significantly influenced by species and the levels of total flavonoid and tartaric esters were almost identical in the samples. Antioxidant activities and antiradical scavenging capacities of the extracts were high levels in all rose hip species. It is noticeable that organic acid and sugar contents of the fruits were highly dependence of species and the high levels of ascorbic acid were characteristic. In total, eighteen different phenolic compounds were identified in rose hip species by RP-HPLC-DAD method and, in particular, R. dumalis subsp. boissiericontained different phenolic compounds. Gallic acid, catechin, procyanidin-B2 and hydroxycinnamic acid derivatives (chlorogenic, t-caffeic, p-coumaric, ferrulic and sinapic acids) were principal for all rose hip species. A total of 52 volatile compounds were identified in rose hip species by SPME/GC-MS and it was characterized by abundance of alcohols and aldehydes with also some monoterpenes and sesquiterpenes.

Several active encapsulation technologies using polymeric matrix systems for food preservation have been developed in the last decade. In this study, the microencapsulation of rose hip seed oil (REO) ...in to a zein prolamine (ZP) fiber matrix via the coaxial electrospinning technique is studied. The morphological features of core-sheath REO encapsulated ZP fibers were modulated through process parameters (e.g. active and polymer solution concentration, applied voltage and media flow rate). The ZP solution concentration (outer needle) was found to be critical for REO loading capacity (LC) and encapsulation efficiency (EE). The optimal LC and EE of REO in ZP matrix was 12.24% and 90.16%, respectively, and were achieved using a ZP concentration of 35 w/v%. Food packaging potential was evaluated using peeled and segmented fruits (bananas and cumquats). The findings demonstrate a facile packaging route to improve food sustainability and reduce waste.

The morphological and chemical characterization of Rosa sweginzowii Koehne fruit, which belongs to the Rosa section (formerly Cinnamomeae), as a source of valuable bioactive compounds is presented. ...The chemical composition of rose hips was evaluated in terms of the total content of anthocyanins (TAC), phenolics (TPC), and flavonoids (TFC) by spectrophotometry, and ellagic acid concentration by spectrofluorimetry (as borax complex). Morphology of fruit in macro- and microscale (by Scanning Electron Microscopy) and the presence of selected elements by Energy Dispersive X-Ray Spectroscopy were examined. The free ellagic acid content was found at a high level (16.101–24.465 mg/100g dw), and the one of total ellagic acid, after hydrolysis, was in the range of 20.244–29.771 mg/100g dw. Estimated TAC, TPC and TFC were 0.43–7.40 mg CGE/100g, 18 559–27 404 mg GAE/100g, and 10 293–14 159 mg CE/100g, respectively. Regarding the presence of valuable natural antioxidants in R. sweginzowii fruit, this plant could be used as functional food.
•The morphological characterization of Rosa sweginzowii was presented.•R. sweginzowii was found to be the rich source of free ellagic acid.•TPC, TFC, TAC values proved the nutritional properties of R. sweginzowii rose hips.
The dog rose area includes southern and central Europe, reaching southern Scandinavia; it is also found in Asia Minor, Central Asia and North Africa. In our country, Rosa canina is the most ...widespread of the many species of Rosa, common in all areas. The components of the station, known also as the „stationary factors” affect differently the plant life and their chemical composition. Cynosbati fructus is the false fruit of Rosa canina L. (Rosaceae), known in Romanian as rose hip. The rose hip contain as active ingredients 500-1000 % vitamin C, 600-10000 mg% carotenoids, pectin, dextrin, vitamins B2, E, PP, flavone, sugars, organic acids, tannins, volatile oil, vanillin, triterpenoid saponosides, beta-sitosterol, fat (lecithin, glycerides of fatty acids in seeds), minerals (potassium, calcium, magnesium, iron). Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) plays an important role in human body. The greatest amount is found in plants which reached maturity. It is concentrated in the rose hip flesh. Solutions easily destroyit in the presence of UV, of copper, silver, iron and oxidative enzymes traces. Vitamin C participates actively in all processes of oxidoreductions of the living cell. Its lack in food causes the disease called scurvy which manifests itself by inflammated and bleeding gums, tooth loss. Rose hip fruits are known as medicines since prehistoric times.
Ascorbic acid (vitamin C) is an important component in the fruits of dog rose. Its slightly laxative and diuretic effect, for which the dog rose is used in folk medicine, is supposed to be due to its ...content rich in pectin and organic acids. The investigated material were the fruits of Rosa canina L collected from 42 biotypes marked on the route: Suceava – Pătrăuţi – Lunca Sucevei (Dărmăneşti) - Costâna - Părhăuţi - Todireşti - Cajvana - Arbore - Solca - Clit - Marginea -Rădăuţi – Suceviţa – Palma during 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2010 years. The quantitative values of rainfalls influenced the content in vitamin C and the humidity of the fruits. The content in vitamin C increased with the increase in humidity and with the decease in temperature.

This study was conducted to investigate the efficacy of rose hip utilization on various diseases. Rose hips are produced on a shrub native to Europe, and have been used for medicinal purposes and ...nutritional supplementation for centuries. It is rich in minerals, vitamins, and various functional compounds, including calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, selenium, vitamin B, vitamin C, and vitamin E, quercetin, catechin, β-carotene, β-sitosterol, polyphenol, flavonoid, taxifolin, ellagic acid, and salicylic acid. Extracts and powders of rose hips have been reported to contain antioxidant, free radical scavenging, and anti-inflammatory activity, and exert beneficial effects including amelioration of osteoarthritis, body fat reduction, anti-obesity activity, anti-bacterial activity, antidiabetic properties, and anti-cancer activity. Therefore, rose hips as a functional natural food may be considered effective for use in treating diseases including obesity, diabetes, osteoporosis, cardiovascular disease, and cancer. 본 총설은 로즈힙의 영양학적 기능성에 대한 선행 연구결과들을 조사하여 로즈힙의 다양한 효능들을 체계적으로 정리함으로써 로즈힙을 효과적으로 사용하기 위한 기초 자료를 제공하기 위해 작성되었다. 본문에서 언급한 것처럼 로즈힙에는 유용한 비타민 및 무기질 성분들이 풍부하고 β-카로틴, β-시토스테롤, 카테킨, 라이코펜, 폴리페놀, 플라보노이드, 프로안토시아닌, 퀘르세틴, 탁시폴린, 엘라그산 및 살리실산 등의 기능성 성분들이 다량 함유되어 있어 항산화 효과가 뛰어나며, 골관절염 개선, 체지방을 감소, 피부의 노화를 방지, 심혈관 질환률 감소, 항균·항당뇨 및 항암 효과가 뛰어나 기능성 식품으로서 활용 가능성이 매우 높다. 따라서 다양한 질환에 노출되고 있는 현대인들에게 화학적 합성물질이나 약물과 비교하여 천연 기능성 소재로써 비교적 안전하게 사용될 수 있는 로즈힙의 장점을 활용하기 위하여 로즈힙에 대한 연구가 지속될 필요가 있으며, 로즈힙은 천연 기능성 소재로서 다양한 질환을 예방 및 개선하는데 효과적으로 사용될 수 있다고 사료된다.
Eight types of tinctures were produced which differed regarding the raw material (rose hips) treatment i.e. seed content (with or without seeds) and the technique used for rose hip preservation, ...i.e.: fresh (without preservation), frozen, hot air-dried or freeze-dried. In produced tinctures the following parameters were determined: total phenolic content, polyphenolic composition by HPLC method, the contents of phenylpropanoids, flavonols, anthocyanins, l-ascorbic acid, dehydroascorbic acid, antioxidant activity against ABTS radical and ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP). The results indicate that generally higher extractability of the examined compounds was achieved in tinctures prepared from raw rose hip material without seeds. It was particularly pronounced for the content of selected phenolic compounds as well as ascorbic acid concentration. Removing seeds from rose hips affected also higher antioxidant activity in tinctures. Among all preservation techniques applied in this study, freeze-drying was the best to maintain high bioactive properties of the final product.
