Researchers in teacher training have shown a growing interest in using narrative inquiry-based and life histories as qualitative research methods. This study explores student teachers’ personal ...histories in relation to their identity, social class and learning through biographies and narratives. Bakhtin’s conceptual framework of how one develops understanding of others and of oneself in this study is applied. A life history approach is used by employing semi-structured interviews to obtain data. Data analysis was inductive and deductive in nature. Experiences gained during the school-based learning project enhanced the cultural and social interaction gaps and partially solved some of the conflicting beliefs that these student teachers hold about those they consider ‘others’.
Notions of culture, rituals and their meanings, the workings of ideology in everyday life, public representations of tradition and ethnicity, and the social consequences of economic transition- these ...are critical issues in the social anthropology of Russia and other postsocialist countries. Engaged in the negotiation of all these is the House of Culture, which was the key institution for cultural activities and implementation of state cultural policies in all socialist states. The House of Culture was officially responsible for cultural enlightenment, moral edification, and personal cultivation-in short, for implementing the socialist state's program of "bringing culture to the masses." Surprisingly, little is known about its past and present condition. This collection of ethnographically rich accounts examines the social significance and everyday performance of Houses of Culture and how they have changed in recent decades. In the years immediately following the end of the Soviet Union, they underwent a deep economic and symbolic crisis, and many closed. Recently, however, there have been signs of a revitalization of the Houses of Culture and a re-orientation of their missions and programs. The contributions to this volume investigate the changing functions and meanings of these vital institutions for the communities that they serve.

Across the United States, the issue of immigration has generated rancorous debate and divided communities. Many states and municipalities have passed restrictive legislation that erodes any sense of ...community. Against the Tide tells the story of Jupiter, Florida, a coastal town of approximately 50,000 that has taken a different path.     At the beginning of the twenty-first century, Jupiter was in the throes of immigration debates. A decade earlier, this small town had experienced an influx of migrants from Mexico and Guatemala. Immigrants seeking work gathered daily on one of the city’s main streets, creating an ad-hoc, open-air labor market that generated complaints and health and human safety concerns. What began as a local debate rapidly escalated as Jupiter’s situation was thrust into the media spotlight and attracted the attention of state and national anti-immigrant groups. But then something unexpected happened: immigrants, neighborhood residents, university faculty and students, and town representatives joined together to mediate community tensions and successfully moved the informal labor market to the new El Sol Neighborhood Resource Center.     Timothy J. Steigenga, who helped found the center, and Lazo de la Vega, who organized students in support of its mission, describe how El Sol engaged the residents of Jupiter in a two-way process of immigrant integration and helped build trust on both sides. By examining one city’s search for a positive public policy solution, Against the Tide offers valuable practical lessons for other communities confronting similar challenges.

Model" of union and worker center ...organizing. Networks linking advocates in worker centers and labor unions facilitate mutual learning and synergy and have generated a shared repertoire of economic justice strategies. The organized labor movement in Los Angeles has weathered the effects of deindustrialization and deregulation better than unions in other parts of the United States, and this has helped to anchor the city's wider low-wage worker movement. Los Angeles is also home to the nation's highest concentration of undocumented immigrants, making it especially fertile territory for low-wage worker organizing.

Students in competence-based senior secondary vocational education are expected to actively construct personal knowledge during school-based learning and workplace learning. This study introduces the ...construct 'personal professional theory' (PPT) to monitor and analyse students' personal knowledge development. It aims to investigate the development of the content and nature of students' PPTs and their perceptions of learning processes in vocational education during school-based learning and workplace learning. One group of students (n=20) in the domain of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) is followed during one course of 40 weeks in which they alternately participate in school-based learning and workplace learning. A longitudinal design (t=4) including semi-structured concept maps is used to reveal the content and nature of students' PPTs (n=240). Semi-structured interviews (n=10) and log files (n=39) are used to explore students' perceptions of their learning process. No significant differences are found between the four measurements concerning the content and nature of students' PPTs. However, the actual content of students' PPTs shows a relatively unsteady and changeable pattern. Additionally, students perceive workplace learning as an essential process for the development of their PPT. It is concluded that the development of students' PPTs involves knowledge compilation as well as thematic turbulence.

Manajemen Berbasis Sekolah or School-based Management (SBM) in Indonesian elementary school is aimed at optimizing the quality of curriculum and learning management, because learning is the core ...activity in school. Development and improvement of SBM in Indonesian elementary school was implemented since 1999 and has been continuing until now. This study is generally aimed at describing the implementation of curriculum management and school-based learning in Indonesian elementary school. This study employs descriptive quantitative approach. The population of this study was all of the elementary schools in Indonesia which are spread into 34 provinces with three regions namely Western Indonesia Region (WIB), Central Indonesia Region (WITA) and Eastern Indonesia Region (WIT). The sample technique used in this study was purposive random sampling area. The samples of this study were 16 provinces, 32 districts/cities, and 96 elementary schools. The results show that the implementation of curriculum management and school-based learning in Indonesian elementary school is categorized as the excellent qualification. Of the 23 elements/aspects that become the scope of curriculum management and school-based learning in elementary school, all schools have excellent qualifications.
The purpose of this study is to describe the motivational factors of pre-service teachers’ school-based learning.The study group comprised of 99 pre-service teachers in Eskişehir, Turkey. 53 of them ...(19 males and 34females) were history teachers; and 46 of them (25 males and 22 females) were mathematics pre-serviceteachers. Data was collected via an open ended form which includes questions concerning their experiencesand expectations in school. The questions were meant to identify and investigate the motivational aspectsthat enhance pre-service teachers’ school-based learning. A sentence-based content analysis method wasused to analyze their responses. Analyses indicated that there were some motivational factors for schoolbasedteacher learning: qualities of schools, mentors, students, classrooms, and other teachers, educationalapproaches, and intimate relationships. This qualitative information was then used to develop a model formotivational factors for school-based teacher learning. Findings also indicated that a holistic, practice-basedapproach should be used to facilitate school-based teacher learning
