Storm surges and wind waves in the Taganrog Bay (the Sea of Azov) are simulated with the ADCIRC+SWAN numerical model, and the mechanisms of the Don River delta flooding are analyzed. It is ...demonstrated that the most intensive flooding of the Don River delta occurs in case of southwestern wind with the speed of not less than 15 m/s. A storm surge leads to the intensification of wind waves in the whole Taganrog Bay due to the general sea level rise. As a result, the significant wave height near the Don River delta increases by 0.5–0.6 m.

Article gives a review of sea floods on Slovenian coast with emphasis on their formation, extent and consequences. Sea floods are occurring every year, but they vary in frequency and extent. ...Consequently, the damage caused by floods also varies. Sea floods rise with flood tides, strong south winds and drops in air pressure. They are more frequent in autumn and winter, but they occur in spring too. The article presents a complete review of sea floods from the beginning of measurements in Koper to present-day, an analysis of flooded regions and influence of climate changes on sea floods.
Shizuo Ishiguro, the father of Nobel Prize-winning British novelist Kazuo Ishiguro, studied various sea-level changes, such as seiche, also known as abiki in the Nagasaki dialect, and the 1953 North ...Sea Flood, with his pioneering use of an analog computer in the 50s and 60s. Note that pioneering studies by Lorenz and Ueda using digital and analog computers were also performed in the 60s. Based on a retrospective review, it is discussed whether nonlinear phenomena, such as chaos, can be observed in line with his pioneering studies. His studies are also reconsidered in the context of advanced education for high-school students.
The escalating frequency and severity of climate-related hazards in the Mediterranean, particularly in the historic town of Piran, Slovenia, underscore the critical need for enhanced coastal flood ...prediction and efficient early warning systems. This study delves into the impediments of available coastal flood hazard maps and the existing early warning system, which rely on distant sensors, neglecting the town’s unique microclimate. The current study leverages the public registry maintained by the Administration of the Republic of Slovenia for Civil Protection and Disaster Relief (URSZR), an underutilized resource for generating comprehensive and accurate flooding maps for Piran. Here, we show that in the historic town of Piran, floodings reported through the national registry can be used to map coastal flooding by means of verification and validation of the georeferenced reports therein, with subsequent correlation analysis (hotspot, cluster, and elevation polygons) that show temporal and spatial patterns. The innovative approach adopted in this study aims to bolster the accuracy and reliability of flooding data, offering a more nuanced understanding of flood patterns (in Piran, but generally applicable where national or regional registries are available). The findings of this research illuminate the pressing need for localized field-report and sensor systems to enhance the precision of flood predictions. The study underscores the pivotal role of accurate, localized data in fortifying coastal towns against the escalating impacts of climate change, safeguarding both the inhabitants and the invaluable architectural heritage of historic areas.
Originally formulated based on marine geological research concerned with the timing and tempo of the Black Sea infilling, the Black Sea flood Hypothesis (BSfH) argues that this process was a ...catastrophic event ~7150 BP that greatly impacted the prehistoric peoples who lived along the ancient shoreline. The resulting mass migration of peoples led to great transformations across Europe and southwest Asia. Continued research in the region has challenged the timing and impact of the event, arguing instead that it was neither sudden nor catastrophic. However, the BSfH continues to be invoked as a plausible explanation for the lack of early Holocene or Neolithic period sites in northern Turkey. Results from spatial modelling along the Turkish coast suggest that the explanatory power of the BSfH to explain this absence is exaggerated. Rather, other environmental and social factors must be considered in explaining the complete lack of early Holocene sites across the region.
We used DNA sequence variation at the mitochondrial cytochrome b gene (1141 bp) to assess the phylogeography of Barbus fishes in the Black Sea region. Our aim was to test whether the recent ...(≈ 22 000–7500 years ago) freshwater phase of the Black Sea was a conduit for gene flow among freshwater fishes that today are found in streams entering the saltwater Black Sea. Deep phylogeographical breaks suggestive of allopatric divergence were observed between four regional groups of populations. Coalescent simulation used to distinguish between this and an alternative scenario that the phylogeographical structure was due to random lineage sorting showed that the contemporary populations were unlikely (P < 0.001) to have been founded by a single ancestral population. Divergences between the lineages (0.86–2.54%) were dated to the Middle to Late Pleistocene using distances and a molecular clock corrected for superimposed substitutions. Taken together, this evidence suggests that multiple refugial populations survived over several later glaciations in the vicinity of the Black Sea. This Pontic refugium served as the primary source for the postglacial expansion throughout Europe as far as the Atlantic basin. However, only one of the phylogeographical lineages contributed to this dispersion, whereas the others remain restricted to the Black Sea region and followed independent evolutionary trajectories.
In France, the strong storms of the last decades and their impacts on coasts has led to emphasize the relationships which may exist between climate change and coastal erosion and flooding. It seems ...however necessary to consider the contemporaneous geomorphological dynamics of the coasts in the context of their evolution depending upon numerous factors such as the Flandrian transgression, the marine and climate weather, the sedimentary budget and human impacts. Some examples of coastal evolution in Brittany remind us that the shoreline mobility results from processes acting at various scales of time and space. In that context, the predictable impacts of climate change could act as an aggravating factor in an already very unfavorable situation reinforced by the stakes growth.

Agents located from downstream to upstream along an estuary and exposed to a flooding risk have to invest in facilities like a seawall (or dike). As the benefits of that local public good increase ...along the estuary, upstream agents have to bargain for monetary compensation with the most downstream agent in exchange for more protection effort. The paper analyses different bargaining protocols and determines the conditions under which agents are better off. The results show that upstream agents are involved in a chicken game when they have to bargain with the most downstream agent.
The Late Quaternary history of connection of the Black Sea to the EasternMediterranean has been intensely debated. Ryan, Pitman and coworkersadvocate two pulses of outflow from the Black Sea to the ...world ocean at~16–14.7 ky BP and ~11–10 ky BP. From ~14.7–11 ky BP and from ~10–8.4ky BP, they suggest that the level of the Black Sea fell to ~ -100 m. At 8.4 kyBP, they further claim that a catastrophic flood occurred in a geologicalinstant, refilling the Black Sea with saline waters from the Mediterranean. Incontrast, we continue to gather evidence from seismic profiles and dated coresin the Marmara Sea which demonstrate conclusively that the proposed flooddid not occur. Instead, the Black Sea has been at or above the Bosphorus silldepth and flowing into the world ocean unabated since ~10.5 ky BP. Thisconclusion is based on continuous Holocene water-column stratification(leading to sapropel deposition in the Marmara Sea and the Aegean Sea),proxy indicators of sea-surface salinity, and migration of endemic speciesacross the Bosphorus in both directions whenever appropriate hydrographicconditions existed in the strait. The two pulses of outflow documented byRyan, Pitman and coworkers find support in our data, and we have modified our earlier interpretations so that these pulses now coincide with thedevelopment of mid-shelf deltas: \Delta 2 (16–14.7 ky BP) and \Delta 1 (10.5–9 ky BP)at the southern end of the Bosphorus Strait. However, continued Black Seaoutflow after 9 ky BP prevented the northward advection of Mediterraneanwater and the entry of open-marine species into the Black Sea for more than1000 years. Sufficient Mediterranean water to change the Sr-isotopiccomposition of slope and shelf water masses was not available until ~8.4 kyBP (along with the first arrival of many varieties of marine fauna and flora),whereas euryhaline molluscs did not successfully populate the Black Seashelves until ~7.15 ky BP. Instead of relying on catastrophic events, werecognize a slow, progressive reconnection of the Black Sea to the worldocean, accompanied by significant time lags.
