This article explains how a rainforest tribe in Malaysia negotiates their indigeneity, shaped on the one hand by global imaginaries held by tourists, and on the other hand by their quest for ...development and modernity. The Batek are traditionally hunter-gatherers and practice semi-nomadism. They face a dilemma on how to best maintain their agency while remaining ‘authentic’ and attractive to tourists. This paper builds on Bruner's (2005) argument that cultures and indigeneity evolve with modernity, and discusses the contemporary meanings of authenticity from the perspective of the indigenes. A conceptual model to understand the ‘authenticity gap’ in indigenous tourism is offered as we suggest ways in which tourism development may be harnessed, rather than rejected, to resolve this cultural dilemma.

Bu makale, 19. yüzyılın ilk yarısında Aydın eyaletinin Alaşehir kazasında yaşamış konar-göçer bir Kızılbaş-Alevî Tahtacı aşiretine odaklanmaktadır. Tetkik öznesine mikro-tarihsel bir perspektifle ...yaklaşan çalışmada, söz konusu Tahtacı aşiretinin sosyo-ekonomik yapısının açığa çıkarılması amacıyla 2973 numaralı Müslim-aşiret nüfus defteri kullanılmış; ayrıca çağdaş seyahat notlarından, Osmanlı Arşivi’nin çeşitli fonlarındaki farklı resmî belgeler ile temettuât defterlerinden faydalanılmıştır. Bu doğrultuda, bölgedeki Tahtacı aşiretinin demografisi, fiziksel/ruhsal durumu, onomastik niteliği, iskân örüntüsü ve iktisadî hayatı betimlenmiştir. Araştırma, üç ana bölümden müteşekkildir. İlk bölümde, 20. yüzyılın ilk evresinde Tahtacı toplulukların Alaşehir’de yaşadığı üç köy (Tahtacı, Tahtacı Bektaşlar, Tahtacı Alandız) tespit edilmiş, bu iskân merkezlerinin 19. yüzyılın ilk yarısındaki Kızılçukur-Karacaali Tahtacıları ile bağlantıları sorgulanmıştır. İkinci bölümde, Kızılçukur ile Karacaali köyleri periferisindeki Tahtacı aşiretinin iki ayrı topluluğu; demografik ve sosyo-ekonomik kıstaslarca değerlendirilmiştir. Üçüncü bölümde, bu Tahtacı aşiretinin iki farklı yerdeki uzantılarının aralarındaki bağ tasvir edilmiş, konar-göçer doğaları mukayeseli bir pencereden yorumlanmıştır. Sonuç bölümünde, 2973 numaralı Müslim-aşiret nüfus defterinin Kızılçukur-Karacaali Tahtacıları için aktardığı ham veriler, sosyo-demografik ve ekonomik etmenleri önceleyerek bir bütün halinde serimlenmiştir. Netice itibarıyla, 19. yüzyılın ilk elli yıllık diliminde yarı-yerleşik bir kimlikle var olan, 20. yüzyılın ilk çeyreğinde de çoğunluğu köylere yerleşen Alaşehir Tahtacıları; Osmanlı Kızılbaş-Alevîlik literatürü bağlamında ilk kez bilimsel bir çalışmaya konu edilmiş, mikro-tarihsel “aşağıdan” tarihyazım metodunun yerel bir örneği oluşturulmuştur.

A la différence des montagnes rifaines et telliennes, les montagnes atlasiques, continentales et moins peuplées, se singularisent par leur vie pastorale. Depuis les dernières décennies, les ...déplacements des hommes et des troupeaux se réduisent et le progrès de la sédentarisation est général. Les potentialités de ces montagnes sont limitées. Malgré de récentes conquêtes agraires, la terre manque. Au développement d'une arboriculture moderne et du maraîchage irrigué s'oppose la faible productivité de l'agriculture traditionnelle. L'élevage garde ses caractères extensifs et la forêt sert avant tout aux usages domestiques. L'émigration intérieure et internationale reste la source privilégiée des revenus non agricoles pour des populations toujours plus nombreuses. Elle contribue à transformer les habitudes de vie et aggrave les disparités sociales. Les inégalités de développement accentuent les contrastes entre les milieux montagnards. Compared to the Rif and Tell mountains, the Atlas mountains are more continental, less populated and conspicuous by their pastoral activity. Over the last decades, the movement of men and herds has steadily declined and the sedentarization processes have slowed down. The potential of these mountains is limited and despite recent conquest, land is still scarce. The development of modern agriculture and irrigated market gardening contrasts with the low productivity of traditional agriculture. Animal breeding has maintained its extensive characteristics; the forest is exploited mainly for domestic needs. Internal and international emigration are the main source for non-agricultural income for the ever-increasing population. Emigration continues to transform the ways of life and worsens social differences, while developmental inequality sharpens the contrasts between the mountain environments.
