Hip as well as elbow dysplasia (HD, ED) are developmental disorders leading to malformation of their respective joints. For a long time both disorders have been scored and targeted for improvement ...using selective breeding in several Dutch dog populations. In this paper all scores for both HD and ED, given to pure bred dogs in the Netherlands from 2002 to 2010, were analyzed. Heritabilities and correlations between HD and ED were calculated for the 4 most frequently scored breeds. Heritabilities ranged from 0.0 to 0.37 for HD related traits (FCI-score, osteoarthritis, congruity, shape and laxity (Norberg angle); FCI: Fédération Cynologique Internationale) and from 0.0 to 0.39 for ED related traits (IEWG score, osteoarthritis, sclerosis and indentation; IEWG: International Elbow Working Group). HD related traits showed high genetic and residual correlations among each other but were only to a minor extent correlated with ED related traits, which also showed high correlations among each other. Genetic correlations were higher than residual correlations. Phenotypic and genetic trends since 2001 for the four most scored breeds were slightly positive but decreasing over time, indicating that selection over the past decade has not been effective.

A successful management of anaphylactic shock due to toxic envenomation (Apisination) by multiple stings of rock honey bee (Apis dorsata) in two dogs is reported and aggressive treatment lines ...comprising emergency care, drugs, proper removal of stingers and local treatment. Keywords: Anaphylaxis; honey bee; sting
A German shephard dog with history of progressive enlarging tumour like growth for last six months between digits of both hind limbs was presented. On thorough clinical and histopathological ...observations, the dog was diagnosed with cutaneous calcinosis. The calcified masses were removed by electro cautery. As a post-operative care, antibiotic drugs were recommended for 3 days along with regular antiseptic dressing of sutures till their removal. The sutures were successfully removed after 10 days and recovery of lesion was observed. Keywords: Cutaneous calcinosis; dog, histopathological
The present study was carried out on six German shepherd dogs diagnosed with canine ehrlichiosis based on history and other clinical sign including high rectal termperature, tick infestion, clinical ...haematology and serum biochemistry. All six dogs were treated with intravenous oxytetracycline along with dextrose normal saline followed by oral administration of doxycycline along with hepatoprotectant and other supportive medicines. All the dogs were recovered completely within 15 days of post treatment. Keywords: Canine ehrlichiosis; doxycycline; oxytetracycline
The recent completion of the horse genome and commercial availability of an equine SNP genotyping array has facilitated the mapping of disease genes. We report putative localization of the gene ...responsible for dwarfism, a trait in Friesian horses that is thought to have a recessive mode of inheritance, to a 2‐ MB region of chromosome 14 using just 10 affected animals and 10 controls. We successfully genotyped 34 429 SNPs that were tested for association with dwarfism using chi‐square tests. The most significant SNP in our study, BIEC2‐239376 (P₂df = 4.54 × 10⁻⁵, Prec = 7.74 × 10⁻⁶), is located close to a gene implicated in human dwarfism. Fine‐mapping and resequencing analyses did not aid in further localization of the causative variant, and replication of our findings in independent sample sets will be necessary to confirm these results.
Moist scrotal eczema in a four years old male Germen Shepherd dog associated with Staphylococcus aureus was successfully managed using Enrofloxacin and Amoxicillin + Clavanate along with ...Pentoxifylline and other supportive treatment.
Two German shepherd dogs with chronic sneezing, purulent nasal discharges, open mouth breathing, facial deformity with progressive nature were diagnosed with Aspergillosis. Oral therapy of ...Itraconazole and Clotrimazole topical was undertaken. One animal died on 20th day of treatment while other animal on three months treatment was treated effectively.
Although the biology and ecology of the arthropod vectors are different, some factors, such as global warming, the increasing abundance of mosquitoes, the movement of domestic hosts, and the ...abundance of wild reservoirs, can act as favourable factors for the distribution of infections. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of Dirofilaria immitis infection in shepherd dogs living in the high altitude of mountainous area (i.e.1200 meters above the sea level). The study group was comprised of 160 shepherd dogs living in 4 mountainous regions (Targavar, Margavar, Kolshin and Hovarchin) of west Azerbaijan where continuous movement of sheep and goat flocks resulted to have a little information about shepherd dogs in these regions. Additionally, arduous pathways have made impossible any access by car to some territories of these areas. The dogs were mostly mixed raced with different ages (from 1 to 10 years) and sexes (male = 136, female = 24). Blood samples were collected from cephalic vein. Direct thin and thick blood smears and modified knott’s technique were used for detecting D.immitis microfilariae and other blood parasites. The results indicated that 40 (25 %) of dogs were infected with D. immitis microfilariae. In examination of the dogs, no severe life threatening feature of the disease was diagnosed. There were no significant differences (P > 0.05) of Dirrofilaria infection among gender, age groups and geographical areas. High prevalence of asymptomatic Dirrofilariasis in shepherd dogs in this area highlights the need of controlling and preventive programs.
