Presents a series of tests as a basis for further exploration into the Binet-Simon scale of intelligence, and as a revision and extension of the scale. The individual tests would be considered as ...rough approximation to accuracy until data has been secured from the application of the revised scale upon about 1000 non-selected children. Suggests various means of rendering the diagnosis more certain. Suggestions for further development have also been given.

The Miami Instructor Rating Sheet was revised to reduce skewness and improve the discrimination of individual difference. 10 of the 14 scales were changed by dropping the least favorable categories ...and adding another at the favorable extreme; wording was revised in some cases to make the scales more strictly uni-dimensional; a multiple choice instead of a graphic scale was adopted, and the order of categories reversed for half the scales to insure careful reading of each scale by the users. The ratings of 6 instructors by 240 students showed, in terms of the statistics of their distribution, improvement over data previously obtained by the original scale, but further revision for 7 of the scales is still desirable.

In commenting on a suggested revision made by M. J. Papurt, the writer believes that the revision is not so satisfactory as the original form. He considers the new terminology as making a demand on ...the processes of comparison, abstraction, and generalization of which many of the individuals who take the test are incapable. He feels that the suggested shorter list of questions is likely to arouse a patient's antagonism, because the restriction to
pointed
questions will make him feel that the examiner is deliberately trying to find something wrong with him, thus largely defeating the value of the inventory.
Research on the standardization, reliability, validity, factor structure, and subtests of the Wechsler Memory Scale (WMS) (1945) and its revised version (1987) is reviewed. Much research relating to ...the WMS appears to be relevant to the revised version. Use of the instrument in Australia is discussed. (SLD)
A study was conducted in order to investigate the factor structure of the Graduate Record Examinations (GRE) Aptitude Test, which now includes an analytical module. Comparison of the factor ...structures of the Aptitude Test before and after modification suggested that the factor structure of the verbal and quantitative sections of the test has been relatively unaffected by changes made in order to introduce the analytical module. The restructured test does, however, have a distinct, identifiable analytical dimension that is strongly related to the verbal and quantitative dimensions underlying performance on the test. Separate analyses of the analytical section of two forms revealed dimensions in the analytical items, particularly in the "analysis of explanations" item type, that may have practical value for test development activities. A look at another analytical item type, "evaluation of evidence," being considered for inclusion in future forms of the Aptitude Test, suggested that the ability to answer these items depends more on general reading comprehension ability than on analytical ability as it is now measured in the restructured test. Extension of factor solutions to various background variables, such as major field of study, yielded additional evidence supporting the discriminant validity of the verbal, quantitative, and analytical factors found in the test. This article is a one-year review of available research and an appraisal of the Revised Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test (PPVT-R). This instrument consistently demonstrates adequate alternate form ...equivalence across samples and consistently evidences significantly lower standard scores than its earlier version and traditional cognitive tests (WISC-R and Stanford-Binet). Much of the effort involved in a major restructuring of the Graduate Record Examinations (GRE) Aptitude Test was intended to result in the creation of an analytical module to supplement the verbal ...and quantitative sections of the test, thus providing broadened measurement. Factor extension analysis was used in the present study to investigate further the characteristics of seven experimental analytical item types that had been administered in the experimental section of two operational forms of the Aptitude Test. The extension analysis included: (1) examining the loadings of analytical items on the factors extracted from operational forms, (2) computing the contribution made by operational factors to explaining both the intercorrelations among experimental items and the variance of each experimental test, and (3) analyzing the relationships among analytical items that were not explained by operational form factors. The seven analytical item types were shown to be differentially related to the dimensions underlying the current Aptitude Test, in terms of both their independence of verbal and quantitative factors and their relationship to specific abilities. Furthermore, all but one of the seven experimental analytical tests appeared to have at least one interpretable dimension that was distinct from any found in the operational form of the Aptitude Test. This study was conducted to investigate the long-term validity of the Japanese version of the Denver Developmental Screening Test (JDDST). Participating in the initial assessment were 1230 children ...in Tokyo and 600 children in Iwate who were between 1 month and 6 years of age when assessed between 1975 and 1979. Participants in the 1983 and 1985 follow-ups were those subjects who were aged 1 to 24 months, 25 to 48 months, or 49 to 72 months at the time of initial assessment and located at the same address they had been when first assessed. For follow-up, questionnaires inquiring into the present status of subjects at school and home were mailed to teachers and mothers. Three ratings were used to classify mothers' and teachers' evaluations of the children: normal or above normal, borderline, and retarded or classified for special education. Questionnaires were returned for 532 Tokyo and 463 Iwate children. In the northern, rural Iwate area, a modified form of the JDDST was used in the follow-up; this form took climate and urbanization factors into consideration. Long-term validity of the initial JDDST testing in Iwate was evaluated by comparing results on both original and modified forms of the test with initial results on the original form. Findings are discussed. (RH)
The concurrent validity and reliability of Kaufman's short-form version of the McCarthy Scales of Children's Abilities were examined for a sample of 342 Mexican-American preschool and kindergarten ...age children. The results showed that generally the positive psychometric properties of the Kaufman short form were also noted for the children in this study. (Author/BW)
This study (1) provided evidence concerning the construct validity of scales based on the clusters found in a revised, professional-level form of the California Occupational Preference System ...Interest Inventory and (2) examined the degree of internal consistency of the 16 newly devised subscales.
