La traduzione che Vladimir Nabokov svolge del poema russo Evgenij Onegin di Aleksandr Puškin offre lo stimolante esempio di un artista che si presenta come traduttore, critico, commentatore e ...studioso. Il saggio esplora il lavoro svolto da Nabokov sulla traduzione di Evgenij Onegin e la sua successiva riflessione sui possibili metodi per rendere un’opera letteraria in un’altra lingua, giungendo alla conclusione che l’unica vera traduzione del romanzo in versi di Puškin è quella che trasmette il più fedelmente possibile l’esatto contenuto semantico dell’originale (la «traduzione letterale», secondo la sua definizione), sacrificando tutto alla completezza del significato tranne il ritmo giambico.
Le pagine che seguono presentano un percorso di esplorazione di alcuni romanzi scritti in lingua inglese da autori originari del continente africano e selezionati dall’editoria milanese negli anni ...Cinquanta – un decennio che consente di osservare gli esordi di un panorama editoriale in rapida evoluzione. Dopo la fine della guerra, alla curiosità per l’esotico e l’avventuroso si aggiunge – per gli intellettuali, gli editori, e anche per un crescente numero di lettori – il desiderio di una netta discontinuità con le politiche culturali del fascismo; questo favorisce diversi percorsi di sperimentazione editoriale e un’apertura alle letterature straniere senza precedenti. La regione sudafricana spicca nel pur esiguo panorama dei libri che giungono sul mercato italiano negli anni Cinquanta; dal Sudafrica provengono due delle narrazioni analizzate in questa sede, Piangi, terra amata (Cry, the Beloved Country), di Alan Paton (Milano, Bompiani) e Il sentiero del Tuono (The Path of Thunder), di Peter Abrahams (Milano, Baldini & Castoldi). A queste, si aggiunge un romanzo proveniente dal Lesotho, Fuoco nero (Blanket Boy’s Moon), di Peter Lanham e Atwell Sidwell Mopeli-Paulus (Milano, Ugo Mursia). Si offre qui un’analisi di alcuni aspetti delle tre opere selezionate per illustrare scelte editoriali piuttosto audaci per il periodo, che non soltanto aprono finestre su mondi lontani a lettori ignari dell’esistenza delle letterature africane, ma scelgono anche di non ‘addomesticare’ l’incontro con culture e linguaggi profondamente diversi, proposti attraverso traduzioni molto attente all’alterità della cultura di partenza.

Taking an interdisciplinary approach, this book raises new questions and provides different perspectives on the roles, responsibilities, ethics and protection of interpreters in war while ...investigating the substance and agents of Japanese war crimes and legal aspects of interpreters’ taking part in war crimes. Informed by studies on interpreter ethics in conflict, historical studies of Japanese war crimes and legal discussion on individual liability in war crimes, Takeda provides a detailed description and analysis of the 39 interpreter defendants and interpreters as witnesses of war crimes at British military trials against the Japanese in the aftermath of the Pacific War, and tackles ethical and legal issues of various risks faced by interpreters in violent conflict.The book first discusses the backgrounds, recruitment and wartime activities of the accused interpreters at British military trials in addition to the charges they faced, the defence arguments and the verdicts they received at the trials, with attention to why so many of the accused were Taiwanese and foreign-born Japanese. Takeda provides a contextualized discussion, focusing on the Japanese military’s specific linguistic needs in its occupied areas in Southeast Asia and the attributes of interpreters who could meet such needs. In the theoretical examination of the issues that emerge, the focus is placed on interpreters’ proximity to danger, visibility and perceived authorship of speech, legal responsibility in war crimes and ethical issues in testifying as eyewitnesses of criminal acts in violent hostilities. Takeda critically examines prior literature on the roles of interpreters in conflict and ethical concerns such as interpreter neutrality and confidentiality, drawing on legal discussion of the ineffectiveness of the superior orders defence and modes of individual liability in war crimes. The book seeks to promote intersectoral discussion on how interpreters can be protected from exposure to manifestly unlawful acts such as torture.

In this paper, through the study of some terms present in the novel Fortunata y Jacinta by Galdós that refer to the medical and pharmaceutical field, we want to carry out a reflection on some ‘best ...practices’ that the translator can use in his rewriting work, considered as the result of a cognitive operation, a complex intrigue of acquisition, categorization, reflective observation, elaboration, experimentation and creation of emotional-motivational dynamics which has, as its ultimate product, the recreation of the metatext. These 'best practices' fall to all intents and purposes in the topics to be treated within a teaching of translation with a neurolinguistic slant.
