Le but de ce travail est d’étudier le fonctionnement des constructions transitives du likwála. Cette langue dispose de deux types de constructions transitives : des constructions transitives ...canoniques et des constructions transitives non canoniques. Les premières constructions sont bâties avec des bases verbales transitives prototypiques susceptibles d’admettre un ou deux objets de façon inhérente. L’objet des constructions transitives canoniques satisfait au critère de l’ordre syntaxique des mots, au critère de la pronominalisation et au critère de la subjectivisation. Ces constructions sont réparties en deux groupes : les constructions transitives canoniques à un objet et les constructions transitives canoniques à deux objets. Les constructions transitives à un objet peuvent admettre un second objet par l’adjonction du suffixe dérivationnel -is- au radical verbal monotransitif. Les constructions transitives à deux objets peuvent également recevoir un troisième complément qui n’est pas un complément d’objet. L’objet, dans une construction monotransitive, a une valeur sémantique de patient. Dans une construction ditransitive, le premier objet assume une valeur sémantique de bénéficiaire et le second celui de patient. Les secondes constructions dites non canoniques se construisent avec des radicaux verbaux intransitifs auxquels le complément est, soit relié au verbe par le biais d’un fonctionnel soit, postposé au verbe dérivé d’un radical intransitif. Ce complément n’a pas toutes les caractéristiques d’un objet en bantu. Les constructions transitives non canoniques peuvent admettre également deux compléments.
Podstawowy szyk zdania w słoweńskim języku migowym (SZJ) to szyk podmiot-orzeczenie-dopełnienie (SVO). Wskazuje na to analiza zdań bez topikalizacji czy fokalizacji, zawierających czasowniki ...przechodnie i dwuprzechodnie, wyprodukowanych w trakcie zadania polegającego na opisie obrazów (Picture Description Task) przez informatorów, których pierwszym językiem jest SZJ. Dane pokazują również, że modalność wizualno-gestowa, z której korzysta SZJ, ma wpływ na linearyzację, ponieważ predykaty klasyfikujące oparte na modalności wizualnej wymagają użycia nacechowanego w tym języku szyku SOV.ABSTRACT The basic sign order in Slovenian Sign Language (SZJ) is Subject-Verb-Object (SVO). This is shown by analysing non-topicalised or focalised transitive and ditransitive sentences that were elicited from first language SZJ informants using Picture Description Task. The data further reveal that the visual-gestural modality, through which SZJ is transmitted, plays a role in linearization since visually influenced classifier predicates trigger the non-basic SOV sign order in this language.
In the cognitive linguistic literature, sentences like Nixon bombed Hanoi have long been explained in terms of metonymy, either ‘referential’ (i.e. the NP Nixon metonymically refers to the bomber ...pilots controlled by President Nixon), or ‘predicative’ (i.e. the verb bomb metonymically refer to the ordering of the bombing). More recently, it has been suggested that such sentences may be better analyzed as slightly untypical literal instances of the transitive construction. In this paper, a corpus-based analysis of the verb bomb is presented, which shows that the usage of this verb is very different and much more heterogeneous than the constructed examples cited in the literature suggest. It is argued that this heterogeneity cannot be coherently analyzed in terms of referential or predicative metonymy. Instead, a non-metonymic account is sketched out based on a general characterization of causative transitives and verb frames from which logical subjects are selected based on salience. This account provides a unified analysis of the phenomenon that even allows us to recognize additionally the existence of referential metonymies in certain cases. The paper contributes to a growing body of research literature that takes the idea of a ‘usage- based’ cognitive linguistics seriously by attempting to test and develop analyses empirically on the basis of authentic usage data.
In a number of places Mark Sainsbury has recently developed an attractive irrealist account of fiction and intentionality, on which there are no fictional objects or exotic intentional entities. A ...central component of his account is an ambitious argument, which aims to establish that the truth of intensional transitives such as “I think about Holmes” and “Alexander feared Zeus” does not require the existence of fictional or intentional objects. It would be good news indeed for the irrealist if Sainsbury’s argument worked. However, I argue that Sainsbury’s argument fails. I conclude by considering how Sainsbury’s irrealist might explain our intuitions about such sentences, drawing upon another component of Sainsbury’s irrealism.
En el contexto de evaluación de praxias, los gestos pueden clasificarse en tres categorías: transitivos, intransitivos y no familiares. Si bien ha sido reportada la disociación entre los distintos ...tipos de gestos, es usual que en la evaluación de praxias o en el análisis del desempeño de los pacientes no se consideren por separado estas tres categorías de gestos, o se varíe la definición de ellas. El objetivo del estudio que se informa fue eva luar si en un mismo grupo de pacientes con demencia tipo Alzheimer se encuentran disociaciones entre gestos transitivos, intransitivos y no familiares, previamente descriptas en el rendimiento práxico de pacientes con lesiones focales (González Rothi, Mack, Verfaellie, Brown & Heilman, 1988; Negri et al., 2007). Se evaluaron 50 pacientes con diagnóstico de demencia tipo Alzheimer probable en imitación de praxias (gestos transitivos, gestos intransitivos y gestos no familiares) y uso de objetos. Los estímulos fueron tomados de la batería cognitiva de evaluación de praxias (Politis, 2003). Los gestos eran inicialmente realizados por el examinador, quien mantenía su ejecución durante la imitación del paciente. El grupo con diagnóstico de demencia tipo Alzheimer rindió significativamente peor que el grupo de los controles sanos. En el grupo de pacientes, las cuatro pruebas de praxias correlacionaron entre si. Sin embargo, se hallaron disociaciones en el rendimiento individual de cada paciente en esas mismas pruebas. La disociación entre gestos transitivos, intransitivos y no familiares apoya la posibilidad de que estos diferentes tipos de gestos involucren sistemas de procesamiento distintos.
R.M. Sainsbury's account of reference has many compelling and attractive features. But it has the undesirable consequence that sentences of the form "x is thinking about y" can never be true when y ...is replaced by a non-referring term. Of the two obvious ways to deal with this problem within Sainsbury's framework, I reject one (the analysis of thinking about as a propositional attitude) and endorse the other (treating "thinks about" as akin to an intensional transitive verb). This endorsement is also within the spirit of Sainsbury's account of reference. /// La explicación que ofrece R.M. Ce mémoire se veut une synthèse, destinée à la communauté combinatoricienne, de quelques outils développés pour aborder le problème d'Hurwitz ainsi qu'une présentation des résultats récoltés. Le ...problème d'Hurwitz consiste à évaluer, dans un groupe symétrique, le nombre (dit d'Hurwitz) de factorisations transitives de la permutation identité dont on a imposé le type cyclique des facteurs. Nous décrivons tout d'abord les origines topologiques de ce problème à travers le dénombrement des revêtements ramifiés de la sphère. Nous présentons également un cadre algébrique naturel, le monoïde des permutations scindées, qui permet d'exprimer les nombres d'Hurwitz comme coefficients de structure de l'algèbre de ce monoïde, plus précisément de la sous-algèbre engendrée par les classes de conjugaison, dont une base naturelle est indexée par les multipartitions (ou partitions scindées). La théorie des représentations de cette algèbre fournit un algorithme pour calculer les nombres d'Hurwitz à une partition dont la complexité (minimale, uniforme et exponentielle) est bien meilleure que celle d'une approche naïve. Ce cadre algébrique donne par ailleurs une formule décrivant les séries d'Hurwitz à plusieurs partitions comme polynômes en les séries d'Hurwitz à une seule partition. Nous présentons secondement le cadre géométrique dans lequel s'expriment d'une part la formule ELSV, laquelle décrit les nombres d'Hurwitz à une partition comme fonctions de certaines intégrales, d'autre part un théorème de M. Kazarian exprimant les séries de Hurwitz à une partition comme polynômes en certaines séries formelles dont l'étude asymptotique est achevée. Une fois décrit le fonctionnement de ce cadre intégral, nous récoltons l'asymptotique de tous les nombres d'Hurwitz
This thesis is meant to be a digest, adressed to the combinatorician community, of some tools developped to tackle the problem of Hurwitz, as well as an exhibition of the thus-harvested results. The problem of Hurwitz consists of computing, in a symmetric group, the (so-called Hurwitz) number of transitive factorisations of the identity permutation whose factors have prescribed cyclic types. We first describe the topological layout of this problem through the enumeration of the ramified coverings of the sphere. We also present a natural algebraic frame, the monoid of split permutations, which allows to describe Hurwitz numbers as structure coeffcients of the algebra of this monoid, more precisely of the subalgebra spanned by the conjugacy classes, whose natural basis is indexed by multipartitions (or split partitions). The representation theory of this algebra yields an algoithm to compute one-partition Hurwitz numbers whose complexity (minimal, uniform and exponential) is far better than that of a naive edging about. This algebraic frame yields a formula describing several-partition Hurwitz series as polynomials in one-partition Hurwitz series. We secondly present the geometric frame in which are been expressed on the one hand the ELSV formula, which describes one-partition Hurwitz numbers as functions of some integrals, one the other hand a theorem of M. Kazarian expressing one-partition Hurwitz series as polynomials in some formal power series whose asymptotics is completly understood. Once the using of this integration frame has been described, we derive the asymptotics of all Hurwitz numbers
