English Noun+Adj compound adjectives containing an intensifying metaphor (e.g. crystal-clear) pose particular challenges for French translation, due in part to the absence of a direct equivalent ...construction. Our study examines morphosyntactic and conceptual-semantic translation procedures that capture how these challenges are resolved. We also explore the little-investigated aspect of translation variation (the number of different solutions for each item). We analyze the potential effects of two factors: the presence or absence of figurative intensification and the items’ frequency of use in English. Our results indicate that translators prefer different morphosyntactic procedures for different compound subtypes. Overall, an adjective constituent is most frequently retained, although complete reformulations with a noun or verb also occur. Semantically, the intensifying meaning is often rendered non-figuratively, depending on what is available in idiomatic French usage. Intensification is also frequently dropped. Translation variation is remarkably high, due in part to extensive use of near-synonyms. High-frequency items do not appear to converge on a smaller number of translations, but instead provide more opportunities for diversification.
This article deals with the problem of moral censorship in literary translations in the Peoples Republic of Poland, which is rarely discussed as researchers usually focus on political censorship. The ...case study is the novel The Time of the Hero by Mario Vargas Llosa. Fragments of this work which contained graphic erotic descriptions were removed from the first Polish edition. They were identified by comparing the original text and the translation, as well as subsequent Polish editions. The author suggests that research on moral censorship in the second half of the 20th century should be continued and indicates possible areas of investigation.
This article focuses on the relationship between language and culture in the context of the translation of journalistic texts in economics and finance. We can assume that any text or discourse, ...whether literary or specialized, contains a number of culturemes, that is, elements at the interface of language and culture, typical of the given language, which pose translation difficulties. For the purposes of the article, translations made by students of Romance philology were analyzed and selected problems with the translation of culturemes, including the problem of adopting an appropriate deictic perspective, were highlighted. Another issue raised in the article is the hybrid nature of French media texts in economics and finance, which exhibit a large number of features typical of literary texts. The conclusion emphasizes the fact that students should be sensitized to those layers of text and discourse that are at the interface between language and culture. These layers must be properly identified, decoded and translated from the language of the source-culture to the language of the target culture.
The article aims to present two different approaches to philosophical words or names of values, that is Vocabulaire européen des philosophies 2004 directed by Barbara Cassin and Axiological Lexicon ...of Slavs and Their Neighbours 2015-2019 directed by Jerzy Bartmiski. In the first part the two projects are presented in context and compared by analyzing their differences and similarities in order to prove certain complementarity between the two approaches. In the second part the concept of freedom/ liberty is analyzed. After presenting how it is treated in the two dictionaries, the author studies the occurrences of minor words for freedom: liberty and swoboda, in Davids Graeber Debt and its Polish translation.
The study focuses on the first text of astronomy published in Romanian, Prescurtare de astronomie popular Abbreviation of Popular Astronomy, in 1839. In most important lexicographic works such as ...DLR, MDA and DELR, the author is considered to be a certain G. Missail. We offer sufficient evidence that G. Missail, appearing on the front page, is only a mark of an ex libris type and that the translator is actually Alexe Marin. We also explain how this error regarding the paternity of the text has occurred in speciality literature. Subsequently, we identify the main source of the translation (the French version of John Herschels treaty on astronomy) and examine some of Marins translation techniques.
Nonlinguistic presuppositions are undoubtedly a problematic factor in translation (Nord 2005, Fawcett 1997, 1998, Dimitriu 2005). In the case of musicology texts, they occur at both micro- and ...macro-levels (Dimitriu 2005), ranging from specialised lexis to quotations, allusions or references. The translator must be able to identify, decode and decide how (or whether) to relay these presuppositions to the target readers in agreement with the translation brief (Nord 2005, 2008, 2014) and the target text skopos (Reiss and Vermeer 2014, Vermeer 2000). The failure to do so will result in mistranslation, and may also generate unwarranted (or inappropriate) inferences.
In the present study, the issue of phrastic (interlinguistic) variation is analyzed in depth by delimiting it from the concept of synonymy/phrastic heteronimy. Within this theoretical frame, two of ...the objectives of our approach aimed at emphasizing those religious terms which are most prolific in the paremiological field, respectively the degree in which the mentioned paremiological patterns are illustrative for the revelation of certain religious themes versus the lay ones, as well as the limits of a possible dichotomy in that respect.Even though the similarities between the two Romance languages are evident (see, in that sense, the subcategory of the proverbs presenting biblical phrastic equivalents and/or those of Latin origin), our research allowed us to point out several distinctive features. Thus, in a series of cases, we could talk of imperfect interlinguistic consistencies, a concept that holds water by taking into account the selection of certain particular syntactic schemes in each of these two Romance languages, as well as by opting for different lexical ways of rendering the same mental representation, ways that we defined within the terms of discursive synonymy. Following this point, in accordance with the results of the undertaken research, Romanian is characterized by a relatively higher diversity of the registered phrastic structures, as well as by a superior representation of the phrastic variants which use religious terms.
The concept of text is one of the key terms of translation studies; however, it has been presented through the prism of simple definitions, with scholars of translation putting forward fairly obvious ...definitions, limited within linguistics. This is one of the reasons why today in the time of omnipresent multimodality the concept seems inadequate or certainly problematic. Meanwhile, a clear definition of the concept seems necessary for defining the object of study of translation studies and thus securing the autonomous status of the latter. The article is an attempt made to consolidate knowledge and ideas concerning the concept presented throughout the years. It also puts forward a definition of a text understood within the structuralist and semiotic perspectives founded on Yuri Lotmans semiotics of culture and Charles Sanders Peirces universal categories.
