Increasing the functional diversity of cover crop polycultures has potential to modify nutrient cycling. Aboveground tissue from rye (Secale cereale), vetch (Vicia villosa subsp. dasycarpa), and ...chicory (Cichorium intybus) was arranged in litterbags, and rates of nutrient supply were measured. A control, monocultures of each species, a biculture of rye:vetch, and a polyculture of rye:vetch:chicory were compared. Increasing functional diversity through reducing the quantity of rye tissue by 30% to include 10% chicory and 20% vetch increased the total amount of nitrogen released by 257%.
Well-planned crop rotations and targeted use of organic amendments are critical to success in organic wheat production. The impact of green manure (GMr) type, GMr termination timing, and “Acti-Sol” ...pelletized dehydrated poultry manure (DPM); 5-2-3 on organic wheat productivity and quality was evaluated from 2014 to 2016 in Truro, NS, and Saint-Mathieu-de-Beloeil, QC. Crops prior to wheat were soybean or GMr of hairy vetch/oat (HVO), common vetch/oat (CVO), and red clover (RC) (NS site), and HVO, red clover/oat (RCO), and oat (QC site). Trials were split-split-plot designs with treatments of precrops, GMr termination (fall vs. spring), and DPM at 0, 40, 80, and 120 kg total N ha-1. Wheat yields ranged from 1500 to 1800 kg ha-1 if unfertilized with DPM and following soybean or oat precrops. All legume GMrs (HVO, CVO, and RC/RCO) and DPM applications increased grain yield (2000–4200 kg ha-1) and protein content (13%–16%), wheat total N uptake 49–60 kg N ha-1 (QC); 87–125 kg N ha-1 (NS) and soil mineral N content mid-season and postharvest, and responses were consistently greatest following HVO. Timing of GMr incorporation largely had no impact. Applying DPM at 80 kg N ha-1 was an effective substitute for a GMr precrop.
Vaisman, I., Entz, M. H., Bamford, K. C. and Cushon, I. 2014. Green manure species respond differently to blade rolling. Can. J. Plant Sci. 94: 1507-1511. Reducing tillage in green manure (GM) ...management has led to interest in using the blade roller in organic agriculture. This study investigated the interaction effect of GM termination method (blade rolling and conventional tillage) and GM species choice chickling vetch (Lathyrus sativus L.), Indian Head lentil (Lens culinaris), and hairy vetch (Vicia villosa Roth) on a subsequent crop of hard red spring wheat (Triticum aestivum L.). Significant effects on weed density and biomass, wheat biomass, and wheat yield indicated that the GM species were affected differently by termination methods. It was also discovered that spring-seeded hairy vetch continues to grow after rolling, while chickling vetch and lentil die.
Low winter rainfall poses a challenge to production of high biomass
from cover crops, which is necessary for the success of conservation
agriculture systems in the Eastern Cape Province of South ...Africa. An
experiment was conducted to evaluate the adaptability of white oats (
Avena sativa ), grazing vetch ( Vicia dasycarpa ), rye grass ( Lolium
multiflorum ), barley ( Hordeum vulgare ), radish ( Raphanus sativa
) and triticale ( Triticale secale ) production under low winter
rainfall conditions in the Eastern Cape. The cover crop species were
relayed into maturing maize ( Zea mays L.) in February, March and
April of 2010, exposing them to varying rainfall conditions. They were
followed with summer maize. Growth rate and final biomass of cover crop
species decreased with delayed planting, except for radish. February
planted cover crops had the lowest residues remaining at maize
planting, resulting in higher weed dry weights at 3 and 6 weeks after
planting (WAP). April planted cover crops improved soil N by a greater
margin compared to earlier plantings, which were comparable within
their category. Grazing vetch and radish resulted in the greatest soil
N improvement. Significantly higher (P<0.05) maize grain yield was
recorded in grazing vetch, while all other species had comparable
yields. It is, thus feasible to produce cover crops under winter
rainfall conditions in the Eastern Cape and grazing vetch and radish
can serve this purpose.
