Partant de la multiplicité des conseils dispensés aux jeunes diplômés quant à la valorisation de leurs activités associatives, cette recherche interroge la place donnée à ce sujet dans le processus ...de recrutement et notamment les facteurs qui favorisent une prise en compte croissante des compétences qui y sont acquises. Elle s'appuie sur une enquête miroir quantitative (questionnaire en ligne) puis qualitative de 75 entretiens, auprès de jeunes diplômés de niveau Bac +5 et de recruteurs, managers, RH ou intermédiaires du recrutement. La recherche interroge l'image que les recruteurs ont de ces activités, notamment sur le potentiel de compensation des manques ressentis au travail qu'ils leur prêtent. Elle met l'accent sur les transformations à la fois des entreprises et du travail des cadres qui poussent certains recruteurs à considérer ces activités comme porteuses de compétence. Elle envisage également le candidat jeune diplômé comme un véritable acteur du recrutement, réflexif, stratège et capable de convaincre un recruteur de sa compétence.
Considering how much advice is given to young graduates regarding how they should leverage their associational activities, our research focuses on how these activities are mobilised during the recruitment procedure. It elaborates on the factors that foster the taking into account of the skills that are developed through these activities. It draws on a quantitative (CAWI) and qualitative survey (75 interviews) targeting both "Bac +5" graduates and recruiters (HR professionals, recruitment agencies and managers). The research investigate the recruiters' perception these activities, including the compensation mechanisms they see between them and the work situation. It emphasizes on the transformations of both companies and the executives' positions, that lead some recruiters to consider these activities as skill-providing. It views the young graduate as a genuine actor of the recruitment procedure: a reflexive strategist who is able to convince the recruiter of his or her skill set.
Since the recession has hit Greece, individuals have not only experienced financial loss but they have seen their whole life overhauled by the crisis. The purpose of this study is to explore how ...young Greeks who have recently graduated, or who are about to graduate, perceive their lives and futures at this time of severe economic crisis. More particularly, I tried to focus on their feelings (such as worries and hopes) about how the recession has impacted their lives and their feelings regarding their futures. Research has shown that during periods of recession, young individuals are affected the most and for that reason I chose this population as the target group of my research. Coming from the perspective of developmental and life-span theories that in order to achieve healthy psychological development, individuals need to go through particular tasks during their life span; I was particularly interested to see how the recession has psychologically affected young individuals who, even though they have recently ended two of the main markers that identify their transition to adulthood (education and gaining a professional qualification) due to the recession they were unable to move to the stages which are employment and financial in-dependence. I wanted to listen to these individuals’ stories and see how they perceive their lives and futures and what their feelings are during the period of recession. In a narrative framework, following an unstructured interview and asking the participants one main question, ‘What are your thoughts and feelings about your life and your future during the period of recession?’, the participants were allowed to express their stories and what they considered as important, creating in that way unique narratives that represented their own processes. The main themes that were identified from the stories are: ‘Their career choice and their hopes for employment prospects’, ‘Broken dreams and collecting the pieces’, ‘Impact of recession on the individual’, ‘Impact of recession on other aspects of their life’ and ‘Participants’ feelings about their future’. Presenting and exploring the participants’ stories I attempted to gain a better understanding and awareness of how the recession has impacted them psychologically, investigating their psychological needs finding ways to support them. The realisation of the significant losses that were described by the participants drove the researcher to turn to bereavement counselling theory trying to identify ways to psychologically support individuals who experience similar losses and clinical interventions were suggested.
This article presents a conceptualization of downclassing. To begin with, it is proposed the notion of socio-educational downclassing to address the situation of individuals in their thirties who are ...at the top of the educational structure and in a relatively low position in the pay scale structure. Secondly, some explanations of the rise of social downclassing are briefly described and it is assessed its influence on transformations of the value of graduates qualification in relation to their social position. Finally, a diachronic perspective is adopted to revise the studies that have addressed the issue of downclassing and that have focused on graduates. Given the fact that those studies have been basically done in France and the United States, the article concludes with a proposal on the relevance of testing the theories aforementioned in a different Sociocultural context, particularly affected by the economic crisis, as the case of Spain.
En este artículo se presenta una conceptualización del fenómeno del desclasamiento y se propone la noción del desclasamiento social educativo para abordar la situación de los individuos de la cohorte de treintañeros que se encuentran en lo alto de la estructura educativa y en una posición relativamente más baja de la estructura ocupacional-salarial. Después se describen brevemente las explicaciones que remiten al auge del desclasamiento social de los titulados y su repercusión en la transformación del valor del título en relación a la posición social. Por último, se adopta una perspectiva diacrónica para realizar un recorrido por los estudios que han tratado la cuestión del desclasamiento y han puesto el foco directa o indirectamente en los titulados. Dado que tales estudios se han realizado básicamente en Francia y Estados Unidos, se concluye con una propuesta sobre la necesidad de poner a prueba las teorías planteadas al respecto de la mencionada problemática en un contexto sociocultural diferente y particularmente afectado por la crisis económica como es el caso de España.
The recent crisis has taken its toll in terms of unemployment, especially among young people. This has revived the debate on the contribution of Education and Training (E&T) systems to the ...employability of young graduates. At European policy level, there is a growing interest in creating incentives for reforming E&T systems so as to make them more responsive to future labour market needs and short term adverse labour market conditions. One of the main challenges is finding valid measures for evaluating the contribution of E&T systems to employability, taking into account their diversity within the European Union. This paper presents an operational framework of analysis for employability and discusses some of the most important challenges related to the multidimensional nature of the employability concept, the lack of data for cross-country comparison and the difficulty of disentangling the role of education and training systems from other factors in evaluating labour market outcomes.
The purpose of this paper is to investigate the factors that are influencing the young graduates for intention to create new venture. The study further highlights how the attraction, networking ...support, entrepreneurial capabilities, self-independence and self-reliance influence the young students to initiate their new businesses. The sample size of this study was 255 final semester students of various disciplines in different universities from Islamabad and Rawalpindi. The survey based questionnaire was used for data collection. Based on findings this study concludes that all variables, included in the study, play a vital role in new venture creation. Therefore, on the basis of findings this study concludes that young students are more motivated towards new venture creation and start their own businesses.
The world crisis that began in 2008 has negative influences over financial and economical-social structures, mainly affecting the young working population. The most affected by the current economical ...and financial crisis is the youth. Jobs offer for young people seems to have decreased to a significant extent, while they of all categories of job candidates are the most affected precisely due to their lack of experience and to the high costs for training new employees under the current competitive labour market conditions. Data from a study by the National Employment Agency indicate for 2010 that only 6.36% of young unemployed (under the age of 25) found jobs within the first three months. In the same time, the main specializations for which personnel was still being recruited at the end of 2010 were IT, outsourcing, accountancy, engineering, retail and pharmaceuticals, according to recruitment agencies.

Fields are characterised according to the specialisation of job choices made by PSGs. A preliminary investigation is undertaken of changes in supply and demand of PSGs in different fields. Part A of the report summarises patterns for all PSGs, and compares fields of study. Part B contains field profiles for each of 26 grouped fields of study that can be compared across the two years.

Improving women's access to economic opportunities remains an important development challenge for the Middle East and North Africa region (MENA). Although impressive strides have been made ...region-wide in improving women's educational and health outcomes, the region's low female labor force participation rates are not commensurate with these achievements. The youth, especially young women, are very vulnerable, facing significantly higher rates of unemployment. Productive use of this increasingly well educated portion of the labor force promises faster and more sustained economic growth for the region as a whole. In this context, MENA countries are looking at various policies and programs to change this situation. This quick note looks at a pilot program in Jordan which is attempting to tackle this challenge.
This report assesses and analyzes the current state of the Malaysian university system and makes recommendations on ways to further strengthen existing higher education institutions. It looks in ...particular at the policy framework needed to support the growth and development of the higher education system which include the legal framework, quality assurance systems, incentives for investment, R&D policies, financing mechanisms that help low income students access education, and public financing programs that direct subsidies to strategically important institutions or fields of study. This report aims to identify key challenges and appropriate solutions which could constitute relevant policy advice for the Government of Malaysia. It concentrates on the higher education sector, including both public and private universities. Notwithstanding the overall focus on the university sector, the study makes occasional reference to the wider concept of tertiary education system as needed. It also makes reference to the broader concept of a national innovation system (NIS), and devotes considerable attention to a number of critical issues related specifically to the way that improvements in the performance of higher education institutions can lead to an overall better performance of the NIS. The report is organized into two main parts. It starts with a diagnosis of the present situation, relying on a range of key indicators to benchmark Malaysia's national innovation and higher education systems against select OECD and East Asian countries and on an in-depth analysis of the universities' main strengths and areas of weaknesses. The second part provides policy recommendations and detailed action plans to improve the Malaysian higher education system, with special attention paid to the research and innovation nexus, graduate employment, quality assurance systems, financing mechanisms, and the governance and management framework.
