  • Ocena kakovosti podtalnice na primeru vodonosnika ob Mislinji [Elektronski vir] = Evaluation of groundwater quality – the example of aquifer along the Mislinja River
    Breznik, Jana ; Trobec, Tajan
In the area of the Mislinja aquifer, basic physico-chemical parameters of water were studied by field and laboratory analyses, and the results were used to evaluate groundwater quality. The ... methodology used is transferable to other water sources - including water resources in karst landscapes. A detailed study of the narrower and wider surrounding of the sampling site (land use, possible pressures on water quality) and field (instrumental measurements -temperature, pH, electrical conductivity, oxygen content) and laboratory analyses (measurement of concentrations of pollutants such as nitrate, nitrite, ammonium, phosphate, chloride and sulphate with test kits, determination of water hardness and biochemical oxygen demand) were carried out. Nine sampling locations (wells and boreholes) were sampled and samples from Mislinja River were also analysed to study the relationships between groundwater and surface water. The study is preliminary because the study area is not included in the regular national monitoring of groundwater quantity and quality. Our results have contributed to a greater amount of information on groundwater contamination of the aquifer along the Mislinja River. Elevated nitrate and chloride levels were detected in groundwater at all sampling locations, while elevated levels of the other contaminants were localised and present only in individual samples. We recognised the great potential of the applied method to familiarise students with water quality and anthropogenic pressures, especially in secondary school geography classes and cross-curricular integration with chemistry. Conducting such analyses of groundwater as part of school activities would, among other things, raise students' awareness of the importance of mostly overlooked underground waters, which are often also used as a source of drinking water.
