Background. In spite of intensive molecular studies and some new insights regarding the beginning and development of epithelial ovarian cancer, world statistics as well as Slovenian one speaks about ... low grade of early detection and consecutivelly low 5-years survival of the patients. The purpose of our study was to establish retrospectivelly the level of early detection in the group of patients operated at Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics in Ljubljana in the period 1996-1997. Methods and results. One-hundred-twelve patients, operated because of epithelial ovarian cancer in 1996 and 1997, entered the study. One the basis of their clinical documentation we analised stage of their cancer illness at definite surgical-pathohistologic diagnosis, then relationship between stage and age, histologic type, grade and its relation with age. We compared results of early detection during 1996-97 with the results of a former study for the period 1981-90. Chi2 test was used. The difference between the percent of in-the 1st-stage-diagnosed epithelial ovarian cancer in the period 1981-90 (23.3%) and between correspondent percentin the period 1996-97 (38.4%) was statistically significant (p<0.003). Even after performing correction of 1981-90 result, including borderline epithelial tumors, the difference was still significant (p<0.05). We also established connection between younger age (till 40 years), early stage and low grade, and converselly between older age (over 60 years), advanced stage and high grade, even though we did not perform statistical evaluation. Conclusions. Early detection of epithelial ovarian cancer in the period 1996-97 was significantly improved according to former results. Probably the reason is already widespread use of vaginal ultrasound at the primary health care level. (Abstract truncated at 2000 characters.)
