  • Celostno obravnavanje otrok in mladostnikov z epilepsijo v Sloveniji = Comprehensive care for children and adolescents with epilepsy in Slovenia
    Ravnik, Igor-Mihael, 1944-
Past developments of epilepsy services for children and adolescents in Slovenia are briefly summarized. In parallel to the endeavours to set up a multidisciplinary team needed to address the problems ... of the most severely affected patients with epilepsy, various forms of assistance for psychologicaland social problems of life with epilepsy have been introduced mostly as pilot projects supported by non-governmental funds. Epileptology, orrather comprehensive care for people with epilespy, is a demanding field, due to the complex nature of the disorder necessitating well coordinated inputs of several professional domaines: clinical neurology, child and adult: neurophysiology: neuroradiology: neuropsychology: nuclear medicine, psychiatry, clinical psychology, neurosurgery, social work. To make it function, high degree of trans-disciplinary co-operation and institutional support are needed. Definite lag or lack of managerial support to professionalplans had led to stagnation of care for the most severe patients in Slovenia. Non-governmental projects have enabled professionals to gather useful experience and develop novel ways to address psychological and social problems that could not be implemented in health institutions. In the authors opinion, favourable factors that now exist in the country (experienced professionals in fragmented institutions, political support to healthpromotion) and internationally (recognition of epilepsy as an important public health issue, aims of the Global Compaign against Epilepsy 2001-2004) should be made good use of in order to develop comprehensive level of epilepsycare-medical, social, psychological, re/habilitation oriented-in Slovenia.
