  • Key competencies of project team members for successful completion of information technology projects
    Besek, Barbara ...
Many studies show that failure of information technology (IT) projects continues to concern executives and burdens organisations. Individuals are realising they should develop skills to become ... successful project team members or project managers. In IT projects, team members are typically involved in four roles: project manager, analyst/consultant, developer, and testing engineer/user support. The aim of our paper is to present the competencies of the project team members which are necessary for the successful completion of an IT project. Further we reveal differences between the competencies of the project team members that were present and important for successful projects. We are also exploring differences of project manager competences in comparison to competences of other project team members. Our analyses also show that for a successful innovative IT project, competencies are more important than completed level of education of project members. Findings of our study have practical implications in a newly developed competency framework which can support managers when recruiting new project members as well as to consider training for the project team members who currently lack the competences necessary for a specific role within the project. Organising project teams according to their competencies could result in more successful completion of IT projects.
