  • Equality, opportunity, and the American dream
    Sardoč, Mitja ; Prebilič, Vladimir
As a central element of American culture and an integral part of the American ‘way of life’, the American Dream represents the single most recognizable symbol of its national ethos as well as a ... trademark of US ‘soft power’. Nevertheless, over the last few years, the American Dream has become the object of variegated objections. In particular, due to a mounting inequality and decreasing upward social mobility its critics have accentuated that its promise of a ‘better and richer and fuller life for everyone’ has faded. This chapter examines the intricate relationship between the American Dream and equality of opportunity. The introductory part outlines the ‘standard’ interpretation of the American Dream as the most tangible materialization of the idea of equality of opportunity. The next section presents some distinctive aspects of equality of opportunity. This is followed by an examination of some criticism that addresses the alleged failure of the American dream. The concluding section sets the stage for possible future research on the intricate relationship between these two ideas and the vitality of the American Dream itself.
