The present work tries to present the problem of smoking in Ljubljana, its connection with other risk factors, possibilities of interventional measures for preventing of smoking, discontinuing with ...it and presenting a healthy way of life. The influence of smoking is indisputably connected with the development of different forms of cancer, heart and arterial diseases and the chronic pulmonary obstructive disease. Also proved is the relationship with additional risk factors. Well known is the relationship between smoking and the lowering of the protective cholesterol. On the other hand, the hypothesis of connection with other risk factors, as improper nutrition, obesity physicalinactivity and elevated blood pressure, remains uncertain. The purposeof the investigation was to determine the number of smokers and those who stopped smoking, at which age they started with this habit, how extensive and how useful are the information they received about smoking and the harm connected with it. In addition, it was investigated how many risk factors are possibly to be blamed for the development of chronic non communicable diseasesamong smokers and in general, if smokers carry on a less healthy life as non-smokers. This was the initial working hypothesis. Methodology: The analysis was performed on the pattern basis of the Ljubljana population and according to the WHO-CINDI protocol. The pattern was obtained by casual computer selection after following criteria: the age between 25 and 64 years divided in decades groups, with equal male:female ratio. A number of 2000 participants in each group were considered as a basis for the analysis. At theend, the number of evaluated persons was 1692. The pattern was never smaller in any group from the expected one. (Abstract truncated at 2000 characters)
