The starting-point of the present PhD thesis is a research of the tombs of the Chinese Han dynasty (206 B.C. - 220 A.D.); of the traditional Chinese cosmological system and of the world view as can ... be found in the architecture of the tombs, in the arrangement of their places and in their art, all of them closely link ed with burying the members of high social class. The research materials were tombs with mural paintings as well as literary sources, according to which a reconsideration of the iconographic material closely connected with the architectural structure has been made. The interdisciplinary research transcended the analysis of an individual grave structure beyond the limitations of individual disciplines and rather than separated its parts joined them into an integrity of cultural, social, spiritual and cosmological picture of grave structures. Simultaneously, the research supposed a link between the architectural and painting elements and finally leads to confirm the hypothesis which supposed the reflection of the spiritual world and of the entire Chinese traditional cosmological system in the architecture and in the art design of the tombs of the Chinese Han period. A thorough analysis and survey of the interior of the tombs with paintings reveal that mural scenes not only represented an aspiration for embellishment, but also had a much more profound meaning: together with the construction of the grave chamber and other artistic burial objects they represented the entire cosmos - thus the soul would be able to attain immortality in the ever changing but never ending cosmos. The analysis of grave paintings has shown that the base component of the grave paintings concept is represented by a correlative cosmology of yin-yang wuxing, by means of which they tried to explain the existence and alteration of the entire cosmos, the birth, old age, sickness and death of every individual, the changes in the ruling houses and the development of the social progress. If they succeeded in setting a foundation of the cosmic framework with the aid of an architectural design of grave chambers in the form of around ceiling raising over the square form of the chamber, than they represented the activity of the entire cosmos by means of an iconographic compositional scheme which represented the constant interlacement of the two cosmic forces, manifested in the circulation of the five dynamically interacting cosmic phases, through which all substances in nature proceed. The purpose of representing cosmic principles, by means of which they constructed the artificial cosmic image, was placing the deceased soul into an eternal context of cosmic space and time. Thus the human aspiration for rebirth and attaining immortality in the cosmic cycle of perpetual changes could finally be achieved.
