Background: The aim of our study was to evaluate the quality of preventive care offered to infants and small children by the dental service of the HealthCentre Moste - Polje. Subjects and method: ... Dental examinations were performed in a group ot 310 children aged 3 years who had been seeing the dentist regularly twice a year since the age of 6 to 12 months, and in a control group of 112 three-year-olds who had never visited a dentist before. We looked for the presence of dental caries and assessed the status of oral hygiene. The parents were asked to provide information on the child's nutrition, general eating habits and oral hygiene practices. Results: Caries was present in 22 percent of children in the study group and 71 percent of children in the control group. Also the other evaluated variables showed a significantly better status in the study group compared with the control group. Conclusion: Early preventive care significantly reduces the prevalence of caries in children. In order to achieve further reduction of caries, preventive measures should be initiated before the age of 6 months. The preventive programme should cover a greater proportion of children and their parents.
