Vloga bifosfonatov pri zdravljenju bolnikov s solidnimi tumorji = Role of biphosphonates in treating patients with solid tumorsObralić, NerminaBone is a preferred site of metastasis for many solid tumors, and the complications associated with bone metastases can resultin significant skeletal morbidity, including severe bone pain, pathologic ... fracture, spinal cord compression, and hypercalcemia of malignancy (HCM). Bisphosphonates (BS) are effective inhibitors of bone resorption and reduce the risk of skeletal complications in patients with bone metastases. BS are the current standard ofcare for preventing skeletal complications associated with bone metastases in breast cancer. Zoledronic acid has demonstrated clinical activity in patients with prostate cancer and a wide variety of tumor types. In addition, preclinical and preliminary clinical data suggest that BS may prevent cancer treatment-induced bone loss and the development of malignant bone disease in patients with early-stage cancer. There is insufficient evidence supporting the efficacy of one BS over the other. Although oral BS can be self-administered at home, the treatment regimens for these agents are complicated. At present, most evidence supports the use of intravenous BS. AllBS are well tolerated with a low incidence of serious side effects and may be administered safely over a period of years.Source: [Zbornik predavanj] (Letn. 44, suppl. 1, 2005, str. 27-37)Type of material - conference contributionPublish date - 2005Language - englishCOBISS.SI-ID - 19843289
