Nevrofiziološka opredelitev delovanja perifernega živčevja pri maničnodperesivnih bolnikih, zdravljenih z litijem = Neurophysiological assessment of peripheral nervous system function in manic-depressive patients, treated with lithiumPodnar, SimonInfluence of lithium on peripheral nervous function was evaluated by comparingmeasurements of neurophysiological parameters in two groups of patients and a group of healthy volunteers. There were 20 ... lithium treated manic-depressive patients in the first group, 20 affective-psychotic patients without the lithium treatment in the second and 20 age and height matched healthy volunteers in the third. Motor system function was neurophysiologically assessed by measuring M wave amplitude after proximal anddistal stimulation of the median and peroneal nerves, by calculating conduction velocity and by F wave latencies. Sensory system function of the median and sural nerves was assessed by measuring sensory conduction velocity and neurogram duration and amplitude. We found lower amplitudes of M waves on median neuve stimulation in both groups of patients (p < 0.015)č M wave amplitudes on peroneal nerve stimulation were lower only in the group of lithium treated manic-depressive patients (p c 0.055). In sensory system only on median nerve stimulation amplitudes of neurograms were lower in both groupsof patients comparing to healthy volunteers (p < 0.020). Our results show light pathological affection of motor and sensory axons in affective-psychotic patients, which is only a bit more severe in the lithium treated patients. This subclinical affection of peripheral nerves in manic-depressive patients is most likely due to several reasons, lithium (within therapeutic plasma concentrations) being just one.Type of material - research report ; adult, seriousPublication and manufacture - Ljubljana : [S.
