Some possibilities for improvement of hill grassland in the pre-alpine region of Slovenia with emphasis on botanical composition

Based on field trials the influence of eight methods to improve hill grassland and its botanical composition are described. After the 5-year period 1985-1989 changes were noted in the sward which was ...under a cutting management of 2-3 cuts/year. Festucadominant vegetation which was previously present in the natural sward seemed to be influenced mainly by NPK treatment together with liming or broadcasting white clover; in all three cases the impact was almost the same.Treatments without N fertilizer mostly increased the legume content. New sowings of grass/legume mixtures had an immediate and significant impact on the species structure which seemed to be quite unstable and ttended to revert to the natural sward under the same fertilizer treatment.
