  • Analysis of chaotic properties of bluff body wake using a computer vision system
    Novak, Matej, 1968- ...
ǂThe ǂanalysis was made of chaotic properties of the turbulent mixing flow in the wake of a prismatic bluff body in an open-return subsonic wind tunnel (Re[b] = 5100), using flow visualization and a ... digital image-processing technique. A high-speed camera was used to capture smoke visualization images of the turbulent mixing flow structures. A quantitative analysis was made on time series, obtained by simultaneous digitization of scalar properties in several small areas (windows) of the overall image. In order to evaluate the minimum number of effective degrees of freedom of the observed regions, a correlation dimension of the chaotic attractor was determined for respective window positions. As the recirculation region is entered, by decreasing the distance of the window from the wake, the correlation dimension rises. This is connected to increased flow complexity near the axis zone behind the bluff body. In power spectra this gives rise to the occurrence of higher harmonics. Phase portraits were derived for light intensity time series in different windows. An average local deformation was calculated for these trajectories. This deformation increases close to the wake axis, corresponding to a rise in correlation dimension. The results of extensive study of chaotic properties over the entire flow field around and behind bluff body were compared to power spectra of the respective light intensity signals.
