The strangest thing : an absolute/relative interpretation of adjectives

The idea of absoluteness occurs widely with reference to adjectival structures, but its meaning tends to shift: absolute adjectives, comparatives and superlatives as well as the absolute degree of ...adjectives all denote different concepts. The paper proposes a Hallidayan Systemic-Functional analysis of epithetic adjectival structures, where adjectives can be used either relatively or absolutely in all three degrees - low, median and high. In this way a number of problematic areas in the comparison of adjectives (superlative structures with intensifier meaning, -er forms which do not allowa standard of comparison) are addressed and several possibilities of further linguistic developments in the use of adjectives discussed.
