Background. It is commonly agreed that long-lasting high stress which affects the articular surface of the hip joint can accelerate already existing degenerative changes in the joint. In this paper, ... the influence of the pelvic shape on the stress distribution on the articular surface of the hip joint is studied. Methods. A three-dimensional mathematical model was used in order to evaluate the contact stress on the articular surface of the human hip joint inone-legged stance for various pelvic configurations. Results. It was shown that the contact stress on the articular surface of the human hip is low for the pelvis with small interhip distance and high for the pelvis with great interhip distance. Conclusions. On the basis of the results presented and the assumption that the high stress on the hip joint articular surface could accelerate the arthrosis development, we conclude that the pelvic shape with great interhip distance is unfavourable regarding the arthrosis development inthe hip joint.
