Finite element modelling and simulation of electroslag remelting process

The quality of the electroslag remelting (ESR) process produced ingot is influenced by many process parameters. Appropriate modelling is of essential importance when the whole process, including both ...the remelting of the electrode and the solidification of the ingot, is to be simulated. Based on the Finite Element technique a special computer program for a simulation of the solidification of the ingot has been developed, incorporating the heat transfer and the thermal stress analysis. In order to take the temperature dependence of the material properties into account, including the phase transformation during the solidification and the elasto-plastic deformations, the non-linear analysis has been performed. The simulation enables a technology engineer to follow continuously the growth of the ingot from the start of the solidification to the final size of the ingot, thus giving him a possibility to optimise the process.
